I do agree with you. My only add on is that i more see the group purposefully getting detention so that all five of them can be together on Saturday considering Bender is in multiple Saturday detentions after the one we see in the movie. But once those detentions are done, if they still have time in the year they would hangout together on Satureday at probably the mall.

I never thought of doing more detentions... what if every one of those " Thats another 1 ( detention ) becomes a multitude of Breakfast Club detentions. just a thought where could John H. have taken this group. IDK what it was like to go to HS in the early 80's before this came out, or much later, such as after the mid-90's. My mom took me to see this movie when it came out in '85, and then I entered HS in '87, so maybe I was the target audience for this film. If so, maybe it worked. I floated between different "cliques" without thinking so much about it. I wasn't the only one, either. I had friends in band who were also in less artsy, more academic pursuits. And maybe those seem to go hand in hand, but sometimes they were also on the football team, and who knows what else. There could be a generational aspect, as well, as Gen X being as abandoned as we are, IDK that we were as likely to be socialized into as rigid a group as those who came before us, and maybe not even as much as those who came after. I can't really say.

I agree with this too. Realistically, for the time, they wouldn’t openly be friends after the detention, but, today in 2023, they could absolutely be friends and nobody else would question it because nowadays, friendship groups are more diverse and inviting. Still, I think it’s more impactful that we don’t have an official answer to what happened next

I think you're right. I was very much like Allison at school, weird and outcast. I was in a school play once and during rehearsals other members of the cast would be really nice to me, but would never speak to me when they were hanging with their friends.

I say that instantly being the best of friends is not the point. The point is that they made an impact on each other. Especially as they reach adulthood and are out into the world, they will always look back and remember. I think they all learned about themselves and from each other that day. It was all for the better. Deep down, Claire is not that stuck on herself after all. She helped Alison and gave Bender the diamond earring. Some would think he deserved a kick in the ass. Actually, he needed to know that he had potential, too. Bender is a bright guy. He's not hopeless and no good, like Vernon thinks. Andrew and Brian got to be heard about their pressures at home to perform well at all costs, what pain it has caused them. Brian couldn't handle any failure, and death seemed a way out. Their worth is all tied up in their performances. So their interactions with each other was a start, to feel that safe to open up when they didn't know each other at all. Allison may seem so freaky, but she longs to be seen and not ignored. To be ignored by her parents was so painful. On top of that, she has no friends. I think she could go far in life if given the chance (like Bender). She's a talented artist, and she is perceptive.

The only two who'll remain friends are Bender and Allison, because they have a lot of things in common. People wouldn't care about either two because they aren't as popular as Andrew and Claire.

@@paladindragoongirl18 If this was set in our current times, they'd be texting each other or have each other as Facebook friends (which isn't really that much of a friend). Other than that, we are supposed to believe there is a romantic spark between Claire and Bender, and between Andrew and Allison. It would make no sense to me if Claire really went for Bender. He could be pretty mean, at times. It only makes sense that they made an impact on each other, and that was it.

@paladindragoongirl18 Brian and Ally certainly would become friends. Ally has none, and Brian has a few, but I see Brian looking out for Ally and wanting to make sure she knew he was there for her.

Exactly. That's what I meant. I think the reason other people find that to be a "sellout" moment is because the black eyeliner and dark clothes weren't necessarily affectations of being lonely or hiding, it was just how she wanted to look. And people just like her felt betrayed by her change at the end. But even if you could say that about her, you could say the same for all of them. As I say, they all go through some type of physical change. And it's up to the audience to decide if that change was permanent. For me, I think it was.

FTR, I never identified with any of the stereotypes/archetypes, but I always saw myself as a combination of Brian and Andrew in the sense that Brian was sort of the voice of reason, and Andrew was about doing the right thing. Like Brian, I could see myself asking what was going to happen on Monday, and like Andrew, I would be the one who would stand up to Bender and defend Claire.

I always assumed that Alison had been abused by a family member and didn't feel safe, so that's why she'd isolated herself over time at school. By the end of this day, she feels less alone and a bit safer with these people.

Perhaps it could have been requested if Andrew could serve detention after school on a weekday but I wouldn’t see Vernon being charitable.

Well said. I was born in '87 myself so I was more a child of the 90's but I still felt like this film was accurate in capturing how I was trying to fit in and make my parents happy while still being angry at them for feeling pressured. RIP John Hughes.

The movie never indicated that Andrew and Claire were dating or had previously dated. Bender was only teasing them about potentially being "steady dates" or "lovers." The two were popular kids, so they ostensibly had many mutual friends (like when Andrew invited Claire to a "party at Stubby's."). At the very least, they had been acquaintances, evidenced byAndrew entering the Library and gesturing to Claire for permission to sit beside her. She shrugs her shoulders as if to noncommittally say, "whatever," or "I don't care." Had they been close friends or boyfriend/girlfriend, Andrew wouldn't have had to ask permission.

Agreed. Definitely Andrew had unofficially taken Allison as a new girlfriend; if even just a casual interest. She took the patch off his jacket, after all. It might end up being an awkward coupling, though, because Allison has spent so much time alone (she, herself admitted, "I don't have any friends.") and without parental supervision, that she has developed awkward habits that are not socially acceptable (playing with her dandruff, cracking her knuckles, and who knows, maybe she even pulls underwear wedgies out of her butt and picks her nose!). Those habits would not magically go away just because there was suddenly a boy in her life, and she would be apt to inadvertently do something or even say something that might be seriously embarrassing to Andrew. Having made his poignant confession to the other kids in the library about having humiliated Larry Lester, Andrew seems to have opened his mind to becoming a kinder human being and not caring so much what his friends say or what his Dad might have to say; e.g., "What the hell are you doing, Son, slumming with that weird girl?" But Andrew has also spent years trying to gain the approval of his parents, his Coach and his friends, so if Allison continues to behave like a manner-less street urchin, that could ultimately embarrass him. As for Claire and Bender, the Princess has obviously developbed a soft spot for the rebel, and she is probably secretly turned on by him, too. Bender will probably encourage Claire to introduce him to her parents (or at least, her Dad, assuming her "poor drunk Mom [is still] in the Caribbean.") as her new boyfriend. Of course, they will be very upset, thinking that their rational, pristine girl has lost her mind. That would be the point, though -- the mission will have been accomplished. If Claire actually starts going out with John on the regular, though, it would be a disaster for Claire. Since he'd already introduced her to pot, he might potentially introduce her to harder drugs like cocaine, which under normal circumstances she never would have tried on her own. He probably would also take her virginity, 'cause after all, he's a hot guy, and why wouldn't she be sexually curious? But John already 'fessed up that he'll never be a one-woman man, so that's not apt to change even though he finds himself dating the prettiest, most popular girl in school. At the very least, Claire will end up with a broken heart. Worst case scenario, she might end up with an unplanned pregnancy, and likely an abortion. Oh, well, I guess we'll never know.

I would think it would actually be the complete opposite. That the point of the film is to show that they CAN be friends, even in an environment when it seems like they can't. Remember, one of the taglines of the movie is, "they only met once and it changed their lives forever."

I think it has a lot to do at least for Claire and Andrew, how well or poorly they are getting along with their original group OR how much status they had within it to just do what they wanted. It isn't really clear if Bender is in a group of rebels that would constrain who he wants to talk to, he may aggressively-teasingly approach Allison and Brian wanting to say hello but fearing rejection so acting like a smart ass instead. Claire and Andrew, if they are not already on friendly terms with one another, may become more that way. Whether each of them is willing to keep up their new dating relationships with Bender and Allison also depends on a lot of factors. Also now Andrew may be willing to stand up for Brian if he is bullied. Different school cultures can be more or less rigid depending again on a lot of factors. In some schools the star students have more status than in other schools. In some schools the slimy rebel has more status than in other schools. In some schools the lines are more easily blurred. My point of reference is from growing up in a rural school so small that these archetypal cliques have limited meaning. Different individuals had those qualities but were often as not friends with each other on some level as there simply weren't enough people to make up a clique of like attracts like. I could only observe the larger schools around us when we met for events, and wonder how much happier they were with more resources and more friends to choose from.

I think that they made a HUGE IMPACT on each other. They will NEVER forget that day or each other, even if the interaction does not last. Claire realized that she didn't have to be so self-focused. She is capable of being giving and thoughtful....helping Alison realize she doesn't have to hide behind a certain look, giving Bender the earring... and I say that though he was a jerk to her, she realized he didn't have to be that way. He could be better than that. The kiss on the cheek in that locked room and the gift of the diamond earring was like saying, "I do really get you, deep down. You don't see yourself as very worthy. You are." Bender can understand that he doesn't have to have a chip on his shoulder or a grudge at the world. He is pretty smart and articulate. He is a rebel who is a smart ass with everyone, but that won't get him too far in the world. Nobody expects him to succeed. He also has been told he is no good, from his family, certainly from Andrew Clark and Vernon, surely by teachers and other authority figures. Bender initially made fun of the others, often out of jealousy and feeling rejected, but then you see he really wanted to be included. Detention may also be an escape from a bad home life. Andrew gets a chance to be vulnerable, and this shows he feels safe to do so. He doesn't have to win at all costs. Allison points out that he needs to think for himself. He actually is more of a troublemaker than Bender. He got into detention for being cruel and humiliating that student, but if it was anyone else he would have been suspended. His sport hero status helped him out. That status is a burden to him, though. Surprisingly, he is quite introspective and very remorseful for his actions. We now know that his father pressures him about not being weak and being number one, and maybe Andrew never even revealed this to his own friends before. Like Andrew, Brian also is under too much pressure. Bender makes fun of him for having the ideal home life, but little does he know. In detention, Brian gets to vent about needing perfect grades to be accepted. Failing to make a silly elephant lamp in shop is enough to put him in a tailspin. He also is embarrassed about being a virgin, but Claire shows empathy towards him and says she is okay with it. After all, she is a virgin, too. Brian gets his chance to voice his feelings to others who didn't really have a clue. He also would be a target for being bullied (it could have been him that Andrew targeted) but now there is an understanding how it is too walk in someone else's shoes. Alison doesn't even need to be in detention. She is so weird that she is off putting, and that a role that gets her by in life. But then she goes from not speaking, to saying outrageous things and lying, to contributing to the group session. She is dreadfully lonely, but she is aware and perceptive. Andrew sees her hidden beauty. Claire seems to see potential, too.

yes i have to agree with this. Probably made an impact on each other's lives and the way they handle situations, but no, they are not going to be friends or hang out, or purposely get detention together.

That's very clever and could very well be accurate. Only thing I would disagree with is that it's subtly hinted that Brian could possibly be gay.

Agreed. This movie was nicknamed "The Little Chill" when it came out, in reference to the earlier movie "The Big Chill," where a group of adult friends spend a week together facing the separation of their lives from their 60s ideals. In both movies, the point is not really about how they view each other but how they each view themselves. Both gatherings are full of uncomfortable realizations. Claire was right about Monday; Bill Hurt in "The Big Chill" was right that the 60s had "died a long time ago." Both were condemned not for being honest but for saying it out loud, the thing the group already knew to be true and hadn't wanted to admit. But I never thought the ending of "The Breakfast Club" was a sad one: they'd each stepped out of their comfort zones. They each found out they COULD relate to people very different from themselves. If I were thinking of what Monday was like, I'd imagine each of them in their normal groups being told "Something seems different about you, but I can't put my finger on it..." Which is how it ought to be.
