This week we're visiting the brewery looking to take on Guinness in London - Anspach & Hobday. London Black isn't just a Guinness pretender though, it's based on a classic London Porter - the capital's own beer style that all but disappeared at the end of the 1800s. Join us as we talk about the beer, taste it alongside Guinness itself, and then take it to the streets!

Trouble with Guinness is it’s so hit and miss. You can get something truly delicious in one pub then get an atrocious pint in the next. It’s part of the charm - find a good Guinness pub and you’ll come back. But i think twice before ordering in most UK pubs.

I love Anspach & Hobday, firstly bought it because of the incredible designs on the cans, but it quickly became one of my favourite brewers. When I went to London I had to go to their taproom in the beer mile and the guy behind the bar was amazing and enthousiastic and made the experience even better. Their porter is great, but the one beer that blew my mind was the Pigeon Queen, that was a recommendation from the barman; a great bitter citrusy IPA .

I cannot begin to express my excitement to see this video about a porter brewed in London, especially with the vignette about oysters. I was always disappointed that Fuller’s London Porter was never available on cask at their tied pubs whenever I visited during the summer until I saw it on tap at the Churchill Arms. But I was over the moon when I enjoyed a Kernel porter and a stout in Manchester on another visit. IMHO nitro contributes to a great mouthfeel but it can sublimate some of the more sharp edges in the taste so the beer loses some of it’s complexity. I would look forward to trying this Anspach & Hobday porter on nitro on my next trip to London, but would absolutely love to try it as a cask ale. I also love the emphasis on the various malts, but with Kent so close by, have these brewers considered losing the hop pellets and incorporating actual hop cones in wet hopping into the brewing process?
@TheCraftBeerChannel
@TheCraftBeerChannel 2 года назад
Well sadly wet hopping isn't possible on a commercial scale as they only last a few days after being picked. As for whole cone British hops it would be a lovely thing to see, but the brewers have to use what makes their beer taste best!

In Ireland traditionally we take our oysters not with lemon juice but with vinegar and fresh cracked black pepper and a little salt. I suspect that's how they used to do it in England as well. To everyone who doesn’t know their Guinness history although old, Arthur Guinness travelled to London and by common consent met Ralph Harwood a London Brewer of the 1730’s producer of Porter & Stout, who Guinness basically copied and built up his Dublin Brewery the other side of the Irish Sea. However, London is the true home of Porter/Stout (basically the same thing at the time). So you can truly see the reason behind the need for A&H London Black to make a long overdue comeback.

Interesting to see a Dublin porter going up against a London porter, especially given Dublin porters were the porter equivalent of German pilsner in relation to Czech pilsner in being the copy rather than the original. I brewed a 19th century style London Porter with a local brewery here in Virginia a few years ago called Blackwall London Porter, the key ingredient was brown malt, which in the 19th century made up to about 35-40% of the grist. How does London Black compare to Fuller's London Porter?
@sonicfactory-co-uk
@sonicfactory-co-uk 2 года назад
Fullers Porter has a richer, fruitier flavour, but is much less creamy. I'd say A&H London Black is more sessionable and should be served colder (8-9 degrees C?), whereas the Fullers Porter is more of a one drink, fireside on a cold winters night beer, that should be served a bit more around 10-11 degrees C. I like both beers, but if I was out in a pub I'd go for the A&H, whereas at home it would have to be the Fullers. That is, until A&H can find a way to can the London Black!

As a Dubliner and a lover of Guinness I’m dying to try out this porter next time I’m in London, but bare in mind that the quality of Guinness in Dublin & indeed Ireland is far superior than the Guinness server in Britain, what is the strength of the London Porter

I was just thinking this myself. If UK Guinness drinkers and enthusiasts experienced the pints in Bowe's, Mulligans and Diggers they would be mindblown.

@@minnietoby You are correct about individual tastes, so there is no correct answer. Don't get me wrong, I love Guinness (and stouts, porters, dark beers in general) and I agree that it is best on draught in Ireland. But I also think it is the weakest of all Irish stouts I have tried, in terms of taste.

I like many different beers. I like many lagers, I like many ales and I love Guinness. I'm going to be spending two weeks in Ireland shortly, so I'll be drinking plenty of the Guinness, other beers I know I love, and trying more I come across. But, I'd love to try the London Black. You guys seem very passionate about your beer and I like that. I live in north Wales so I imagine it'll take a bit of time before I see it in my neck woods, but I'll keep an eye for sure. :-D

Paddy you should look out for Kilkenny Cream ale. If you like Guinness you will love Kilkenny. If you are in Dublin head to Mulligans pub on poolbeg Street. You will get both the best pint of Guinness and best pint of Kilkenny in that pub

The thing with Guinness, Beamish & Murphys, is you can have a session on them. These craft beers are only good if you're having one or two over lunch.

I will drink a Guinness on one day of the year....March 17th, for obvious reasons. This year I had a G and an Ohara Nitro Stout, and liked the Ohara better (probably fighting words). Having said that, here in New Brunswick, Canada, we have a number of local breweries that have their take on a G, and while only one of them in a can pack it on Nitro, they are all better than G. I believe they are on nitro at the breweries, but in the can just on CO2....so you do miss that creamyness, however, they are all still better IMHO, and I drink them year round.

@belfacts
@belfacts 2 года назад
@@meatsweatmundungus6415 so the difference I'm talking about is that in Ireland our Guinness isn't pasteurised and has to be consumed within 6 weeks. Guinness everywhere else in the world, including GB, has the pasteurised version which can last 6 months but doesn't taste half as nice. The most popular one in GB is the extra cold type too which obviously changes the taste too.
