The Bridge Over the River Why? - Opening the Garden Railroad and Building a Truss Bridge 2024

Back on the garden railroad, and the new project, building the truss bridge over the "River Why?" on the north end of the railroad. AND finish the entire north end!
First, we need to repair winter damage on the outdoor model railroad and design a proper truss bridge over the "river". There is no river, but sort of a river channel? Low area? Fun place to model? Yup. All that!
The "Never Mine" was totally blown away in the "downslope winds" last winter, as were several other structures. So we need to repair those. We used JB Weld epoxy as it fills gaps and is super strong. I also redo the mounting system for the structures so the high winds can never blow the village away again.
Future parts of the project include finishing the cement scenery, plants, drip watering, weather, ballast on the tracks, and the wood truss bridge.

"Not a logging railroad". Haha!!! 😂 Nice to see it's all coming together again. The bridge looks great.

Hi again! Yes, it’s always nice to get outside and get some work done between the O2 cold and oh my gosh it’s too hot weather! Right now we’re in the oh gosh, it’s way too hot part of the year, but every once in a great while it cools off to 90° and we can sort of get outside. (37°C) Just as an aside here I love metric for all things except temperature! What an idiotic system to base temperatures on water! that would be fine if we were water. OK, I get it. We’re made of water, but that’s not the point. The temperatures that we normally experience in the world are best represented in Fahrenheit. Where zero is really really really cold! Below zero is exactly what it sounds like. Oh my gosh way too cold way too far below anything you ever wanna be outside and cold! And 100° is all you gotta be kidding hot. Anything over 100° is life-threatening! So it makes a really nice system for expressing the temperatures that humans expect to run into. 37° is the equivalent of 90°? I absolutely refuse to set the thermostat in my house at 23.654°

You and me both! I really love the look of it in the winter, and actually it’s the hot sun that does the most damage. It’s just a nature of outdoor railroad I guess.

Suggestion: install a stationary decoder and a switch machine, in the 'gravel/coaling building' to remotely activate the drop chute into the ore cars. Keep having FUN ! 🙂

I would do that if we used it very often. As it is, it’s quite simple to just grab a hold of a little chain and give a pull! I have to fill it up before I can use it, and I really only get one gondola out of one complete load of kitty litter in the mine. So trying to remotely control it is a bit overkill and it probably would screw up out here on the heat and cold. But I’m really getting a kick out of loading the gondola from the mine!!
@bob_._.
@bob_._. 2 месяца назад
It occurs to me that since cat litter is designed to absorb moisture and clump up, keeping it flowing when it's semi-exposed to the weather could be a problem for you. Have you thought about aquarium gravel? I took a look at a large online retailer and there are some that look like actual hunks of stone and would be a closer color match to your scenery than litter. Larger pieces too, might be better scale for coming out of the mine.
@ToyManTelevision
@ToyManTelevision Месяц назад
Reviewed a lot of aquarium gravel for certain things, but it’s really smooth and doesn’t make a very good ballast. The kitty litter that we’re using is just the plain cheap raw clay kitty litter. So it doesn’t clump and it doesn’t change colors and it doesn’t really even absorb any moisture. Sort of absorb moisture and turns of dark gray but then it dries right back out. So far it’s working great.

In ancient Wales, people talked about the llygad of a river - its eye. The River Wye has an eye, hidden in the foothills of Mid-Wales’ highest peak, Pumlumon (Plynlimon). To reach it from the river’s mouth into the Bristol Channel at Chepstow, you have to travel 134 miles. Imagine a week-long meandering adventure along that route. Now come with us on it. Initially, this route traces Wales along its border with England, taking in some of our most beautiful countryside. Then it heads inland, deep into Mid Wales. You'll find many rich, rewarding towns on its riverbanks, like Chepstow, Monmouth, Hay-on-Wye, Builth Wells and Rhayader. You’ll also find quiet serenity along Wales’ second-longest river. Our country’s spirit is in the water.

We had a little bit of great weather a few weeks ago, which is when I shot most of this video. Now that it’s triple digit I’m working on the bridge inside and in the evening when it cools off a bit, I take the bridge outside to make sure it fits, but when the temperature is over 90°, the temperature of the rails is around 160°!

Sorry for spending time away from your channel. I’ve been depressed. My grandmother passed away in April. Now that both my grandparents have passed, I’m trying to adjust to my new life not having grandparents anymore. I’ve also been busy collecting things a few N scale trains and model planes. And with my grandparents gone I’ve been a little depressed to even run a train in any scale. Being autistic makes it hard for me to adjust to change. My grandparents passing isn’t the only change in my life, my cousin just got married. And I’m proud of him. Good luck rebuilding your garden railroad.

For your removable roof, you could weight it down with some self adhesive tyre balancing weights. They are available for not a lot on eBay.
@ToyManTelevision
@ToyManTelevision Месяц назад
I tried waiting it down and that sort of works. But as long as I have big long plastic tabs that slide down inside the walls, it really holds it in place and it’s very simple to slide it straight up and off. So far that’s working great.

Thanks for all of the Great tips, Dale, but I will have to do all my buildings in cement with brick overlay! If you have crazy winds there in Utah, you should see what it's like here in Central Arizona with miniture Tornadoes (Dust Devils) comin' around on a nice sunny day, spring, summer and fall, from every which way!! That's why the scrub oak bushes have deep roots on granite ground!!!

We really like the look of them outside. Most of the really bad wind damage has happened in the spring. Anyway, as long as everything is anchored down for the most part, it works just fine. Well for the most part! Outdoor railroad is always maintenance intensive

I bet you could do some nice bonsai trees for the railroad. The Jonsteen Company has some nice trees for you to place and you can get them small for about $8.99 or medium for $18.99 or they have bundles. I was thinking of some nice Dawn Redwoods for your railroad. Good upto -25F. Giant Sequoias only -10F good to. You do not have to do any wiring. Just clip them to the size as they grow. Just some thoughts.

Could you use small {neodymium?} magnets to hold that removable end wall in place?
@ToyManTelevision

I’ve bolted it in place with wingnuts, it’s really secure and also really easy to remove. All of the wiring is on connectors and the two wingnuts can be removed in about 30 seconds and the building lifted off.

@@ToyManTelevision If you ever decide to get a 23g pin nailer, the Milwaukee cordless M12, while pricey, overall gets the best reviews. I have DeWalt tools but if I was to get a cordless pin nailer, I would get that over the DeWalt even though I’d have to get the kit with a battery and charger.

@ToyManTelevision
@ToyManTelevision Месяц назад
It’s sort of exist just in pieces. The yard at the East End is finished but isn’t hooked to anything yet the locomotive shop doesn’t have any track in it at all yet, the trestle through the big canyon is finished but isn’t really connected anyway! And from there, it’s all in track, but not really finished, but once we get more put together, we will do a tour. The West End hasn’t even been started yet! It’s turning at the far end of the outside part and the bench work hasn’t even been built yet.

Duct tape glue can be removed with WD-40. You first want to check your material to see if it has an adverse reaction to WD-40.

Duck tape has many uses. But often is a bad choice. Gaffer tape is so much better if you’re going to remove it later.

They are out there on eBay. I’m not sure if they’re still made but probably. Generally speaking they’re pretty expensive, but this one was missing some parts and had been broken. Apparently the wind had blown it away long before we ever got it! Anyway, I was able to rebuild it and fabricate some of the missing parts and save a bunch of money. But look for it on eBay. They’re pretty easy to find. And you’ll be surprised at how big they are when you’re actually sitting one on your table. There are really big structure
