Daphne got no information from her mum Eloise and Farn got most of it from the maid Hyacinth was the luckiest, she got alot from her older sisters (and Gareth was happy to fill up the blanks for her ;)
@@Julia-bp6nx they would tell there daughters a bit about sex so they could avoid getting pregnant outside if marriage, but once the girl was engaged the mother would give her a decent talkdown about sex. That’s just about rich people. Working class girls most definitely knew about sex because they witnessed animals doing it, and they all shared very small houses. Sometimes the same room or bed as there parents. They would have know about sex and more. That’s just a stereotype your listing
Early 1800....HELLO! Giirls of the aristocracy weren't told about sex in fear it would put them off getting married....and that Aristocratic men needed wife to be virgins so that they could guarantee that the child that inherited the title, property and LANDS was THEIR child AND THAT was why Charles was pushed to marry or leave Diana....and that was back in the 1980s....40 FORTY years ago!
The "family way" 🤣 Promiscuity happened a lot more than people realize. Girls were told the bare bones of how sex worked, but it was more about how to produce an heir than it was about real intimacy between a husband and wife. And to that point, especially among the upper tiers of society, marriage was more of a lottery or an auction, matching the most eligible bachelors with young women with the best dowries or favorable connections. Jane Austen wrote about the rare exceptions to that rule, as did the Bronte sisters. Marriage was more of a business transaction.
@@JamesSmith-eg2ln - When the Bridgertons first had the Duke over for dinner and the conversation went towards speculating as to the identity of Lady Whistledown. Hyacinth wondered if it could be Lady Featherington and everybody else said "NO!" and laughed. But she hit very close to the mark.
@@brucasroxx It was mentioned several times at least in the books and when Simon says in the end that they have family traditions about baby names, he means that the first born baby gotta have a name with letter A, second with B....(And they did had babies A, B, C and D)
My youngest sister tries to make this claim (4 kids and I'm the eldest). I tell her that they just gave up after her lol. My father often quotes a former coworker of his whom also has 4 children. "When we had one, we knew we wanted two. When we had two, we knew we wanted three. When we had three, we knew we wanted four...When we had four, we knew we wanted three..." Lol. I love that quote 😂
How did Simon not realize that the only two women he had to hide from were Lady Danbury and Lady Bridgerton? LMAO The idiot fell right into their trap of getting him with Daphne and he didn’t even know??
The fact that Daphne had to have her maid explain how to conceive a child was just so sad. Colin tried to explain it to Eloise without actually explaining it and if Eloise thought hard enough she should've walked her butt to a farm to figure it out. I understand they wanted to ensure they were always pure before marriage, but not explaining things is how some women could become very hurt by him lying about something because he's twisted (like you have to be cut with a knife everytime, and she could want a child so badly that she'd do it), or how they could become pregnant and not even know it because they didn't know the act they did would cause such a thing to happen.
My mostttttt favourite benedict bridgerton.. He is so charming, so handsome, so good looking and his charecter unique, mysterious, artistic, philosophical.. Can't wait for his season
@@janameyer3179 the author always mentioned in the books that benedict is the most handsome one and even in the show luke thompson is the most handsome one, and his love story is by far the most dramatic one
Penelope seemed so much more knowledgeable about sex when she was lady whistledown, but appeared to not know anything when she was with Eloise. Was this her playing dumb or a mix up?
I assume she was probably playing dumb, like whenever Eloise would bring up Lady Whistledown, Penelope would play along and pretend she didn’t know who it was
She never actually wrote about sex directly. In 1813 that would have made her sheet the target of scorn from the ton. Instead, she wrote about such things in the vague terms used by most ladies at the time. Which helped cover up Penelope's ignorance about the specifics, although she certainly learned a bit from Marina's situation.
@@girlysword - Exactly right. Even when gossiping with her usual cronies like Lady Cowper, Lady Featherington still used euphemisms such as "ruined herself" or "light skirts" when speaking of such matters. Penelope had grown up listening to such conversations and knew the correct phrases to put into her writing. But it didn't mean that she understood the actual mechanics of sex.
@@daniels7907 ruination wasn’t actually a euphemism for *ahem* activities, as you could be ruined financially, for being too drunk in public, for being fat (you think that society is fatphobic today, we have NOTHING on their society)
In fairness, especially in 1813 that *was* a big deal. Which is why even Lady Danbury told Simon that he needed to either commit to Daphne or let her accept Friedrich's proposal with his support. Daphne was risking an opportunity that few women ever get just because Simon couldn't decide if he was serious or not.
She is my sister. She's already engaged. AND SHE"S MY SISTER. lol overprotective brothers are the best edit: only when they actually care deep down, even if sometimes it's annoying, its good to know they care.
always love the bridgerton’s family. From ABC being such a good and handsome protective older brothers and the girls being absolutely gorgeous! i love how close they are to each others. Indeed Violet is my favorite mom for sure. Okay, the whole member of family is my favorite! can’t wait to see their dynamic in season 2!
theyre hysterical...! the one thing that made me do a double take was the whole not explaining how babies are made when you know your daughter is about to get married so she had to be all anxious about it not knowing what to say or do... boys got to go to brothels which isnt ideal either but at least got to know -in the worst possible way imo- what it was all about but girls... well, they were thrown to the wolves. .. even in this day and age...
That’s because the dowager viscountess isn’t a bridgerton, rather she married into the family. The former viscount died from a bee sting so not the brightest
0:32 was anyone else slightly horrified at this plot point? Not that the show added it, or it was part of the plot, but because everyone was fine keeping these girls ignorant despite the obvious danger? I’m looking at you, Mama Bridgerton. I love you, you’re a good mom, but not even explaining how sex and conception worked to your married daughter is just- you dropped the ball.
It's not surprising and it's actually very accurate. Girls, especially high class ones, in these times are meant to be kept ignorant of the topic till the actual marriage to keep them innocent (which is a very valued trait in this time) and have to figure it out on their own. The girls would be lucky enough to get taught from their moms. It's frustrating, however, accurate.
@@misabelrodriguez1163 no they were to be given a run down just before the night of the marriage so they knew what to do but mama bridgerton didn't... Maybe cz she was embarassed who knows
Not surprising. Me and my friends did not and four of them are married now. Their husbands had to explain it. I got an online education. At 22. This problem still exists guys
Makes me sad that they try to marry away the girls first, although the three older brothers are given much more freedom and leniency. How old was Eloise when she made her debut? 16? 17?
Most of the times I love daphne and think she is intelligent bit the scene of the duel and the " i am going to be a PRINCESS!" i was like wth u doing hahahha
Guys, have you ever thought that in this part where Eloise and Penelope talk about how a woman has a baby, Penélope already knew how it was made and played it off. Think with me, women were raised innocently when it came to that, but Penelope is (Spoiler Alert) Lady Whistledown, she comments on the biggest scandals of high society and certainly sex scandals are involved in it. But, maybe she doesn't really know, because we see that Lady Whistledown was something new, in other words, she might not have had to comment on these types of scandals yet.
The actress who played Mrs BerBrooke is so good shes so believable in that scene and it was so funny I truly enjoyed watching her even though she had like maybe 4 minutes of screen time it was great
