Ironic that Brisbane is hosting (an engineered result) while Sydney, Melbourne, even Perth venue wise are much more appropriate cities to host. All 3 have the centre pieces of a main stadium and main arena already built and properly utilised for each cities needs. That reflects the IOC's new agenda far better than whatever Brisbane and John Coates told the IOC. Something along the line of "sustainable games, with unrealistic budget, community facilities as proxies for unbuilt venues, and the most expensive venues existing only as bland renders"

The olympics in the last 20-30 years has become absolutely obscene in its waste. If you go back to the 50's and adjust for inflation, the entire cost of the olympics was... about $0.2b and for that they were able to build a 115,000 person stadium. Absolutely bonkers. Today such a stadium would be $3-$4b, even though less workers would build it. But there would be about a 1000x fold increase in middle men shell companies taking their cut. If you think it really costs $2b to build a statdium, I don't know what to tell you. It wouldn't even have over $0.2b in materials.

I think people need to accept that the days of spending massive amounts of public funds for the Olympic Games are gone for everywhere except perhaps China before they fall into a financial hole, or maybe India for an ego trip. It is just that the timing of the Brisbane games means that they are the current example of a government needing to pair back the largess. The cancellation of the Commonwealth Games in Vic recently did not need to happen. That decision could kill off the Comm games permanently. Melbourne could have easily hosted the Comm games in existing facilities with only the athlete's village needing to be built and given the enormous need for more housing that build project is a no brainer. It might seem that not building new facilities for the Brisbane games is embarrassing now, but in the near future that is going to be the international reality, because these major events do not pay back the investment, despite the blue sly projections from the consultants and lobbyists.

The olympics are retracting, Tokyo was the last big spend and they got screwed by the bug. I am going to Paris in 5 weeks, they are not really doing much in facilities, LA is using a 100 year old stadium. Agree they really need to fix the Gabbatoir as the best option. But sounds like Brisso will be going down the craptacular lipstick on a pig approach. Fear the olympics are heading down the path of comm games of becoming a wash out, funny given corporations have never been richer, but seems the owners now want to spend that money on themselves instead of investing in the countries where they extracted the loot from.

I believe LA in '84 is the only time an Olympics has ever made a profit for the host country; it was built on a $500M budget and they just renovated existing stadiums and used cheap materials like foam for signage (LA doesn't get extreme weather and they only needed to last a month anyway). There was also all the TV and sponsorship deals as well which put the games in the black.

Think about the events held at these places in the future. And think about the revenue the Queensland government can collect week in week out, month after month, year after year. The original bid didn't have a knock down of the Gabba.. Leave it at that, just have a minor renovation, and just improve the access from the new 'metro' line. The QSAC spend is just dumb, particularly when you consider how much the temporary stands for the New York T20 stadium cost.

That's because the politicians and AOC mandarins know embarrassingly fa about sports architecture. It's shameful to think that no one actually bothered to look at the dimensions of the Gabba vs the needed dimensions of an athletics track and how many seats would be obstructed or lost. They just saw that both were some version of an oval so all good 🤦 they'd probably confuse and ice rink for a tennis court because they're both rectangular

The Gabba has never sold out since it was built in 2005. Source AUS Stadiums. The state desperately needs a second rectangular field for the Brisbane Roar, Queensland Reds, and womens Football, NRL etc. How on earth, they can't figure out how to just upgrade the existing Gabba, build a second stadium for $3bn is beyond me. Where on earth is this money going? I can't believe they went from one boneheaded idea, to another bone headed idea. Large stadiums, and absolutely worthless in this country. Every major code, is crying out for multiple stadiums at a maximum of 20k capacity and we keep on building zero atmosphere caverns no one will attend, especially this one, in which it will never sell out after the Olympics.

I did a Sports Eco unit in my final semester of uni last year. We read academic literature on the effects of the Olympics on cities and their infrastructure, was quite interesting to see that the community doesn’t benefit as much as you’d think. On another note we did our assignment on the Macquarie point stadium in Hobart, for the Tassie Devils. We concluded that it would be an expensive exercise and that renovation of both existing grounds in the short term whilst the club finds its feet in the AFL, as building an expensive boutique stadium in a small market is a recipe for disaster
@farmerooni
@farmerooni 3 месяца назад
I don't know why people think the Gabba is a good location. Who places a stadium right beside three of the most busiest streets on the southside? What were they thinking leaving so little space for the crowds to spill out onto after the game ends? Anyone caught in traffic gridlock trying to drive along Stanley St/ Vulture St/ Ipswitch Rd during an event will agree with me: it's just a really poorly designed setup. Plus the adjacent state school issues.... If the Gabba is reaching it's end-of-life usability, then it's time to relocate to Victoria Park. Give the new stadium some surrounding green-space, better public transport and walkability to the CBD. Just like what the MCG, SCG, Adelaide Oval and Perth Optus stadiums have. We could do that: a new world-quality Olympic stadium that showcases a huge (revamped) parkland, and a legacy cricket/ AFL stadium to rival other capital cities. We'd also be able to keep the old Gabba site as desperately needed greenspace for the increasingly-dense Woolloongabba suburb. Or maybe an oval and breathing space for the existing state primary school -with so many units being added to the area, there's bound to be future demand for expansion.

People forget that renovating Suncorp is also going to be a complete money blow-out. What was needed in relocation costs whilst the Gabba was being rebuilt? Didn't they ask the AFL and Cricket Australia to contribute $90 odd million? Just to relocate to a temporary stadium built at the Ekka site. Didn't that cost-blowout dummy spit result in the cluster-show we've got now? Now compare that to Suncorp, a workhorse of a stadium that hosts two NRL teams, the A-league's Brisbane Roar AND Super Rugby's Qld Reds. Are all these footy codes going to be asked to fork out $90 million for their temporary relocation stadium? What's the hidden costs in upgrading Suncorp Stadium?

Absolutely perfect analysis. Good video. Build a new stadium, like Perth, with the plan afterwards for that facility being used for International cricket, AFL, concerts and other big events. Downgrade the Gabba to state cricket and local footy like WA has done with the WACA Ground. And since Brisbane accepted the Olympics there is no getting out of it, so they have to stump up the cash to put it on. Hopefully it will work out. They have eight years left. Don’t waste it Queensland.
@Gary-vv5gt
@Gary-vv5gt Месяц назад
@@fido5132 yep I agree. Downgrade both Gabba and Suncorp and build a new multi purpose 65-75k stadium. Even without Olympics, they will still need a stadium of that nature. Its can be designed in a way like Wellington stadium except on a bigger scale. Reason why I say Suncorp should be decreased is because of the restrictions on big events (20 events allowed per year over 30k) and also its will reach a stage where a major makeover is needed, even tho it’s good at the moment. Also restricted heavily within the city limits so no way to expand it. Gabba, same story but lower capacity and no restrictions to big events. Stuck between a city and no room to expand to over 55k. I think smaller games should remain such as test cricket, some afl games should remain at the smaller Gabba and some league/soccer games remains at the smaller Suncorp. I think what type of games should be played at the big stadium (if that happens) - Big ticket NRL games: such as broncos hosting other qld teams, brissy derby against dolphins, some syd and interstate teams. Origin, finals and a possible NRL grand final (if a qld team comes first), since it’s would be almost on par to Accor. - Cricket: most 1 days or 20/20 of ether state or national level. Only test would be ashes. - AFL: like NRL, big tickets games and finals. - Soccer: since a-league is smaller, I would only say grand final or some semi finals. All national games would be held there. As well as usual concerts and whatnot.

Watching this video from Glasgow, Scotland. I thought that we were regressive and in a political need for action. The fact that we will probably be hosting the 2026 Commonwealth Games, just 12 years away from hosting in 2014. The Brisbane need is something similar to Glasgow. We need a new national stadium, like Brisbane needing to replace the Gaba. We need other stadium facilities to be given a renovation. And we need a quality maybe 20,000 athletes stadium that can be expanded when needed with temporary seating. What I find is that the political leaders miss that it’s not the sporting need that comes from the usage of stadiums. They miss the point that concerts and the prestige they bring (Eras Tour) puts the city or region on the map. Yes Melbourne and Sydney get more dates, if Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth were to get 3 nights each, the boost to the economy is more than worth it. I think the time of the big spend Olympic/Commonwealth games is over. I can see them being more scaled back, arguably go on a world tour of cities that can host them and have the facilities to do so. Think London/Tokyo/Beijing for talkings sake.

But this IS doing it properly! Very recently the IOC has made it clear they want cities to show how the Olympics can be hosted efficiently and economically. This will be demonstrated in Paris, with the aquatics Centre being the only new major venue. The reason Brisbane ended up winning by default, and the comm games face the very real prospect of going defunct, is because these events have become far too expensive to host with the escalation in fancy new venues and monolithic Olympic sites that often end up turning into white elephants. Would it be a better use of money to build a new stadium that will last decades than spend a ton of money on a temporary solution? Maybe.. but that would still cost a lot more money, and with the IOC's decree, and the cost of living issues, there will be a focus on penny pinching. If you really want to have a go at the current Olympics plan, have a go at the failure to get heavy rail to Maroochydore in time. Useful infrastructure was the reason Brisbane bid, and it's also something the IOC encourages focus on.

Nah, the IOC is hell bent on a July-September window for broadcast, during which time Melbourne is fkn freezing and the AFL season in full swing. The 1956 Olympic Games took place in November but given that US Presidential Elections also take place in leap year Novembers, US TV networks would be up in arms about having to split their coverage of the two. That leaves rainy October, December which is close to Christmas, and January-March, which may not be overly suitable for the four yearly Olympic cycles many sports operate with. I doubt that Melbourne, or any other southern hemisphere city in the cool climate zones, will ever get a look in. Think about the events held at these places in the future. And think about the revenue the Queensland government can collect week in week out, month after month, year after year. Money that can go towards housing, education, hospitals, roads bridges etc etc. But the Queensland Government HAS to be the majority shareholder for it to be effective. For it to benefit as many Queenslanders as possible It’s like the lottery People pay there money to be entertained, ( football, concerts, conferences etc) But EVERYONE who enjoys these events are actually paying a % every week to improve the lives of every Queenslander Stay Rad my friend 🫵👍

As a Queenslander, it’s incredibly embarrassing to think that Brisbane is going to try and host an Olympics but isn’t willing to spend the money necessary to do it properly, either do it correctly or pull out now. On top of that, if they spent $1.6 billion on a temporary stadium which is in a terrible location only to rip it down after, I think that’s an even bigger waste of money than just upgrading the Gabba or building the new stadium. Queensland had a huge budget surplus last year, surely if the state government keeps that happening some of that money can be sent off to be spent on the Olympics?

The weird thing is… in 2021, the need to tear down some old facilities and build new ones would’ve made sense… because it would’ve probably happened anyway without the goalpost of 2032. The Gabba was falling behind the renovated Adelaide Oval and the new Optus Stadium, so a rebuild/refresh on the 2000 Olympics rebuild wasn’t unexpected. The talk of replacing the distant (and almost 40 years old) Brisbane Entertainment Centre at Boondall with a larger, city-centre Brisbane Live was constant. Instead, Suncorp (which will need a refresh by 2032 but isn’t too antiquated right now) and QSAC (a massive land footprint that really needs to be totally reassessed) seem like odd Olympic bedfellows.

I would prefer keep the Gabba; you need to upgrade it, boost capacity but do it minimally. I would think about rebuilding one half of the stadium then you can do something with the pedestrian plaza. I would put Vulture St and Stanley St underground so you can pedestrianize north and south of the ground as well.

Victoria Park has been the most logical option... rail access on the exhibition line, busway access, also close to cbd, could have really been a comparable sporting district to Yarra Park in Melbourne in terms of location and truly would have made Brisbane a world class city they say they want to be. Unfortunately the other alternatives to building on top of Roma street and the backlash from the community affected from rebuilding the gabba, I'd bet that the only outcomes will be either pulling out completely or try to polish a turd at QSAC to save money.

The Labor state government has ruined EVERYTHING. Proposal after proposal, better every time. Not only bringing stadiums but legendary new districf, sports facilities and housing. All being denied by the state government. The northshore proposal was going to be paid by a PRIVATE COMPANY, and they still denied it. They are likely doing this to get back at the liberals for winning the city council elections, considering they cancelled the Victoria Park plan (this was going to be a huge game changer for the inner city and the Olympics) almost immediately after the city council elections. We must kick labor out of the state government if Brisbane wants to even attempt to host the Olympics. I wouldn’t say no one, but it doesn’t hold the same lure it used to. As a child in 1996 I remember everyone getting geed up for Atlanta, but can’t say the same about Paris. Tokyo was a bit different as the games were on at a reasonable time, but Paris won’t be. I guess the difference, aside from me being older and more cynical, would be that in 1996 the average person could only watch local sports like AFL, rugby league and cricket. Now anyone can stream anything from around the world. EPL, UCL, NFL, NBL etc are now followed almost as keenly as local sports, so the novelty factor of watching international sport at the Olympics has worn off.

What are you taking about, saying it is unusual for Queensland to have a long lasting Labor government? The reality is almost the exact opposite. Queensland has the strongest tradition of Labor government of all Australian states. Since Federation, Queensland has had 84 years of Labor government, with five Labor governments that managed to go consecutive terms in office. Meanwhile, just one conservative government wasn't immediately voted out. There hasn't been a long-lived conservative government in the last 30 years, and conservatives have managed to govern for just five years in that time (about half of it in minority). Compare this to Victoria where the Labor party didn't win two elections in a row until 1985. Since Federation, they've spent 82 years under conservative governments, and 11 of the most recent 30 years have been under conservatives.

I think brisbane is a fine host for it, we don't need wank style stuff like LA or Paris. The IOC can eat shit if they want top of the line stuff. But I will say one thing for brisbane, build an 70-75k stadium (65k in oval format, 70-75k for rectangular). Its will have a better use even after the olympics rather than a QSAC or Gabba upgrade. Also there will be a bonus of an QLD rugby league teams using the new stadium as an option and also could pivot NRL to do an first ranked team of QLD (or if the storm or warriors decide to) can host their grand final there, rather than play in Sydney.
