As part of its celebrations to mark the centenary of its formation, the GWR introduced a new high-speed, non-stop service between Paddington and Bristol in 1935, which it aptly named “The Bristolian”.
The locomotive, 4-6-0 No. 5044 “Beverston Castle”, was a member of Collett’s celebrated
“Castle” class of express engines introduced in 1923. The success of this design is evidenced by the fact that the class eventually numbered 171 engines, the last engine-appropriately named “Swindon” -being turned out of that works in August 1950.
