As part of its celebrations to mark the centenary of its formation, the GWR introduced a new high-speed, non-stop service between Paddington and Bristol in 1935, which it aptly named “The Bristolian”.
The locomotive, 4-6-0 No. 5044 “Beverston Castle”, was a member of Collett’s celebrated
“Castle” class of express engines introduced in 1923. The success of this design is evidenced by the fact that the class eventually numbered 171 engines, the last engine-appropriately named “Swindon” -being turned out of that works in August 1950.

I’ve seen thousands of models and layouts, but that’s the first time I’ve seen real curtains in the carriages!

I have just found your fascinating videos, which remind me of visiting Pendon a fair few times in the early 1960s, and getting a personal introduction and explanation by Roye England. Wonderful memories!

As always, the only complaint is that the video is too short.

Thank you Peter. Your comments are most welcome. You will notice that our Views of The Vale videos are longer and hopefully that balances the shorter train videos. Another consideration for the team is the average time a viewer will spend watching each video. Let’s see what we can do for future planned productions.
