Given that many contemporary Jews who would know say otherwise this seems another echo of the anti-Catholic black legend...and of course there is also the context of the Evil Empire which was already known to have committed mass slaughter and atrocities before any fascists had even existed.

I think “woke” as a term will age quite quickly. I prefer William the Abnegator, one who abnegated his responsibilities to his country, it’s history, culture, institutions and people. Conceder or Conferrer have a nice alliteration with Conquerer, but neither really capture the sense of reckless abandonment that I feel is appropriate.

It requires faith to believe such an absurd idea. It’s like getting 1st class Oxford education in your own home… and is a very timely and correct perspective on those who have nothing nice to say about the British empire while enjoying its extraordinary blessings - so sought out today by those had earlier rejected it, and often still do while they exploit it. For all its actual - and supposed - evils, the British empire (as Prof. Starkey here so eloquently explains) established the foundation and framework to bring the entire world together (if it chooses to so participate), and it did so through centuries of its own suffering peoples (as well as of course of many others) - and then it redeemed itself morally of its crimes in so doing by putting its entire existence on the line - not just once, but many times ( and still even today, and against all and any odds) in defence of not its narrow self-interest (but even against it…) to defend a higher principle: the universal rights of man and rule of democracy and law to bring all mankind together in peaceful harmony and mutual co-operation. In this way Prof. Starkey transcends his genre to become the greatest Anglo-Saxon historian of our time.

Two very good reasons why the Trans Atlantic slave trade has been the main focus of discussions on the terrible evil of slavery are mentioned by Dr Starkey. The lack of descendants of those luckless slaves in Muslim countries, and the very obvious determination to concentrate on white guilt only, while ignoring brown on brown responsibility for what was after all a worldwide industry. But I would add a third reason, and that is the willingness of whites, particularly here in Britain, to feel that guilt over past misdemeanors. Too many people are happy to indulge in cultural cringe, a desire to express remorse over events which none of us were alive to have been responsible for, or indeed were in a position at the time to have benefited from, ie, the majority of Brits during those years were themselves leading poverty stricken, miserable lives. The fact is many European nations, Portugal for instance, who were major slave traders before Britain joined in, or even the French, who, as mentioned here, behaved abominably to Haiti, do not indulge in hand wringing to the extent that we Brits appear ready to do. As for countries like Turkey, they do not involve themselves at all in such self destructive behaviour. Go figure.

Of course that would mean admitting that all peoples, or various countries, cultures, and shade of skin, are equally guilty. Now that would never do, would it Mr or Ms Bennett, I mean we all know that only white folks have ever indulged in evil practices. Er no. So please, do me a favour and stop with your nonsense.

Dr. Starkey, I am in awe of your intellect and your singular ability to distill down the rich tapestry of the human story into an essential oil of the story of the past and simultaneously the history of the future. I am no historian. I am an organic chemist. But I have always been a student of history and very attuned to our collective history of the British Empire, being from Canada, and counting my blessings for having been born into that Empire. Forgive me for being incredibly presumptuous, but I would counter on the point of the Durham report being about our Empire “willing itself out of existence”. I have long held the position that the British Empire never ended. Rather, it evolved. Just as families do. Ours is an empire of the mind; ideas, philosophy, principles. As you stated, the Empire effectively ruled the world. Ours is the dream and the gold standard of most human beings on this world who want to live a good life and cherish their children. If that is correct, then I would posit that the British Empire can never, ever fall as long as there is one soul who lives and breathes and holds dear the values you have so eloquently described in this wonderful chat. Thank you so very much for the light and clarity that you bring to this world.

It's not that you're wrong. Not in the least! It's that what you've said is grossly unfashionable, and it goes head-on into a good many "woke" little empires, where everyone from street corner hucksters to governmental and media solons have built careers around telling the story incorrectly, or skewing the facts in ways from which they can profit...and threatening anyone who puts their little empires at risk with banishment to the Outer Darkness. I find it interesting that the queen's reign started with Churchill and if the Queen dies in the next couple of months and if Boris survives, her last prime minister is greatly influenced by churchill. he will certainly be the queens last prime minister in his mind as he is thinks he will be prime minister way into the 30s. Unless the queen lives to 105 plus he certainly will. He probably won't last the year but he does defy the odds and expectations so who knows.

Interesting that at 25.35 Dr Starkey talks about the Norman Conquest and Prince Charles' words about slavery. In modern wokedom, of which HRH appears to be a very active participant, history does not begin until the first slave ships of the transatlantic trade. Curious that he does not feel the need to talk about the English of the Anglo-Saxon period being sold into slavery.

I studied history (Early Modern) for my Leaving Certificate examination in 1982. I was enthralled by your books on the Reformation. I loved your more recent programmes on TV. I am a fan of yours! I do think that Ireland was colonised by Rome "second hand" in that it came later from a country that had experienced how to colonise ruthlessly and the waves of repression kept coming. So glad that there is a public conversation now regarding the repressive aspects of treatment meeted out by English forces of the past. The recipients of the "civilising influences" found it hard to understand that little of the "underbelly" of English history made it into the British Education system. The slaves taken to the new world were property, so they had an economic value. I have heard that by the American Civil War, they were, collectively, the largest component of economic value in the country. As for slaves in the Islamic world, the men were castrated. Thus, they did not increase in numbers organically. They were replaced by new slaves brought from Africa. Indeed, there is still enslavement of blacks by Arabs to this day.

I was chatting to an Uber driver on Saturday, and he unequivocal in his belief that the British empire was a great thing for it’s legacy of institutions in the fields of law, politics and education to name but a few. This was a Pakistani Muslim and was genuinely sad at the death of QE2. I think a lot of white liberal intellectuals would do well to ask the working class people of former colonial possessions their thoughts on the British empire, as opposed to the biased, professional activist(race grifter) class.

I went to school in the sixties and early 70's and we learnt about the horrors if the slave trade and holocaust but never heard about this historical event regarding the Belgian refugees. As always interesting. I don't disagree entirely with the thesis. However, excepting brief references to the Arab and TransAtlantic Slave Trades, I'm perplexed how such a long lecture can overlook the role of business and mercantile classes creating the European Empires. Also, again excepting brief acknowledgement of the Normans, I find the anglicising of the English Monarchy and ruling elite, throughout again troubling. Used as pivot for defining nationhood, Britain remains part of the European-Scandinavian Empire. In this context, where Britain's military played it's role in Empire building, there's an argument to be made that a fair proportion of the colonial wars and conquests were extensions of the conflicts between European dynasts that have raged since the fall of Rome. (Not dissimilar to the proxy wars of the mid 20 century.) Whilst the failing state hypothesis is compelling, it's not the only story. The Empires and Annexations of territories weren't all won by the sword. It seems to me that the European Empires were uniquely trade based by and large. Which means to a great extent complicity with original rulers and elites. In conclusion, the topic of Empire is complex and nuanced. It's worthy of much more discussion than it actually get. So looking forward eagerly to you opining on the topic in future videos.

It seems to me after the Magna Carta in the 1200's the real start of control started with the proliferation of ship building and shipping of the East India Companies and pirates and maritime law to keep peace between Countries. The laws in an individual Country was no concern to those that didn't live there. From there we have the simple saying that justice may not be fair but it is the best we got. Oh really? Parliament doesn't control the court room does it?

@kellyowens1868
@kellyowens1868 Год назад
@@jeffreyrodrigoecheverria2613 + You sir, need to go back to school if what you learned was that the Spanish Empire didn't committ at least as many "attrocities," if not a great deal more, for a great deal longer than the British Empire ever did. The first nation on earth to outlaw slavery was Great Brittain, and vast amounts of blood, & treasure were expended by Brittain, to end the export of enslaved Africans into the Muslim middle east through overland East African slave trade routes, & with the help of the much smaller US Navy, the similarly sized trans-Atlantic slave trade was eventually ended by large Naval squadrons of both nations stationed continuously off the coast of West Africa, seizing any ships found transporting illicit human cargoes from Africa to the New World, regardless of which nation's flag, those ships sailed under. Anyone can learn about the American, & Brittish African squadrons, & the several decades in the mid-1800's they were continuously patrolling the Atlantic coast of sub-saharan Africa, enforcing the anti-slavery laws their governments had formally enacted, before any other nation on earth. I believe you would find it was largely the ATTROCIOUS treatment of the Cuban, & Philipine people by the last vestiges of the Spanish Empire, that brought about the military conflict with the United States of America, that eventually brought about the end of the Spanish Empire for good, {except for some tiny outposts on the Northwestern coast of Africa that Spain retains to this day}, Is it your understanding that the Spanish Empire became the greatest, & wealthiest Empire on the planet with the voluntary cooperation, & the active collaboration of the indigenous populations of North, Central, & South America? It's hard to believe anyone could ignore, deny, & downplay the untold number of atrocities the Spanish CONQUER-istadors, & the later Spanish colonial officials committed in their 3 quarters of the Western Hemispere. When leftists spin their exaggerated tales of the genocide of the indigenous People's of the Americas, it's not the French, the British, nor even the United States that didn't even exist as a independent nation until the Spanish Empire was dominating virtually all of South America, all of Central America, & a large portion of North America beginning 300 years before the US ever came into being. The institution of slavery wasn't introduced into the "deep south" of the United States by the British Empire, or the American colonists, if you really want to know the truth, Spanish Florida, that included what are now the states of Florida, Alabama, & Mississipi, & parts of Louisiana, was colonized by the military defeat, & enslavement of the remaining indigenous Native American tribes, long before the first White Anglo--Saxon Protestant ever set foot in what is now the South Eastern US. When you are asked what is the oldest continuously occupied settlement in the United States the answer isn't Quebec, New York, Boston, or even colonial Williamsburg but Saint Augustine Florida, which makes the Pilgrims who were fleeing political repression, & religious persecution in Britain, look like lazy oversleepers who came more than 100 years late to the American party. Large numbers, & entire tribes of Native Americans willingly fought to preserve the British Empire in North America during the Revolutionary War 1776 to 1783, & again in the War of 1812. Far from being powerless bands of savages being wiped out en mass in North Eastern North America, several tribes came to dominate entire regions of Canada, the Great Lakes, & North Eastern river watersheds by playing the Dutch off against the English, the French off against the British, the British off against the American colonists etc, etc, I despise black, & white generalizations about complex situations with all manor of contributing factors influencing the outcomes we now call HISTORY today. When you begin with a definitive claim, like yours, "Spanish Empire din do nothin' wrong, & British Empire din' do any good, anywhere" & you compound what is at least a disputed claim, & many experts on colonialism, & European Empires in the New World would call your overly broad, unnuanced claim ... more inaccurate, subjective speculation; than any kind of useful, mostly accurate assessment. Only a fool would compare the Dominican Republic, the former Spanish colony that sits on roughly 50% of the Island of Hispaniola today, & Haiti, the former Frech colony, that sits on the other 50% of that very same island, & say, "look Spanish colonialism, & Spanish Empire must have been better than French colonialism, & the French Empire," because there are 100, & 1 factors that contributed to the shocking differences between 2 former colonies, that now share the same island as independent nations. Would you rather live in Canada, where the Queen of England still graces their coins, & currency, or Venezuela today, since Venezuela was the wealthiest nation in all of Latin America only 15, 20 years ago, before Socialism made all that wealth, based on natural resources like oil, simply disappear so rapidly, it's still hard to grasp. Even I couldn't honestly argue that the US, & Canada would be the world's leading economies, with the enshrined freedoms, & liberties it's citizens enjoy with governments the people choose through free, & fair elections every few years if all of North America had been colonized exclusively on behalf of,the Kings, & Queens of Spain, who were acting in the name of the Roman Catholic church, in turn. Simply comparing the outcomes in former British colonies that were proudly parts of the British Empire, some more recently than others; & the former colonies that made up the Spanish Empire. I live in California, & have lived here for more than 50 years, would that single state I call home, have become the 4th, or 5th largest economy in the entire world that we see today, if Alto California had remained a Spanish colony, & then become just another state in greater, independent Mexico? No one would honestly make that claim with a straight face, would you, with your limited knowledge of history, even bother to attempt what seems like an impossible intellectual feat? There are 1,000's of factors that made California a great place to live, with a highly productive economy, based on a wide variety of very different industries from agriculture, to high tech innovation, & the entertainment capital of the world, to traditional raw materials development, from industrial production to a university system that attracts students, faculty, & research grants from around the world. Even I can tell the quality of life for the average Californian is nothing like what it was even 20 years ago, & corrupt single party Democrat rule has made this state bleed talented, go getters by the millions, not the magnetic place that attracted those same people from all over the US, & the world not that long ago. We may not be eating our pets yet, experiencing a man made famine, & suffering the complete economic collapse that has forced millions of Venezuelans to flee a much smaller population, but you can't argue that San Francisco was one of the world's top tourist destinations, with some of the most valuable real estate on earth no more than a decade, or 2 back, but "The City" by the bay, home if the "Golden Gate" has degenerated into such a dystopian, dangerous 3rd world hell hole I wouldn't invite my worst enemy to visit ... even for if just for a weekend, in the best of weather ... it's been at least 5 years since I decided it was better to avoid the armies of homeless drug addicted zombies shuffling through once attractive, pristine avenues, famous locals, & buzy high end shopping districts that made San Francisco the #1 destination for national conventions in the whole country, not that long ago. There were scores of medical, high tech, & industrial innovation gatherings taking up nearly every available hotel room, & spaces to house 100's of vendors displaying the latest, & greatest new products from around the world ... for most of the year, each, & every year going back 30, 40 years at least. Today, in 2022 ... good luck trying to book a convention of used car salesmen, time share pimps, or biker gangs to come to the always available Moscone Convention Center, in downtown San Francisco, right next to the Museum of Modern Art, & a bustling 24 hour, open air market featuring deadly, illicit street drugs that kill an average of 2, or 3 people nobody cares about, every single day of the year ... Those Biker gangs, the American Waste Disposal Association, & the International Tattoo Convention will pass on coming to SF without even saying, "Thanks! ... but no FRICKIN' thanks, ALOT! ... & don't bother calling here, ever again." Because I don't view complex situations in childishly simplistic terms I can argue that the Spanish Empire was a much better force for progress, & freedom compared to the brutally repressive, rapacious, & bloodthirsty Aztec Empire, but I can also conduct an entire debate from the point of view of Spain's indigenous allies, whose armed warriors in their 1,000's made Cortez's victory possible, as opposed to the Cortez expedition being described as a disastrous mistake, lead by a misguided lunatic who grossly underestimated the military strength of the mighty Aztec Empre, & Cortez would be forever known as the General Custer, {infamous for leading the US 7th Calvary to it's doom at the battle of the "Little Bighorn"}

@@kellyowens1868 1) "The first nation on earth to outlaw slavery was Great Brittain, and vast amounts of blood, & treasure were expended by Brittain," Not because of their kindness of their heart but because of they did not need anymore black slaves due to the industrial revolution. @@jeffreyrodrigoecheverria2613 + "No concept of race" ... did you say? Are you speaking of Spain, or it's former colonies in Latin America. Those folks in the Azores, are they considered just as Spanish as the Castillians, or how about the basque minority in Northern Spain? I'm not sure if they consider themselves Spanish even, hence all those bombings back in the 1970's & 80's. Now the word "Indio" in Spanish ... if there is no concept of race in your culture ... why is that SPANISH word used as such a negative slur, a pejorative insult, & one of the most offensive things a Spanish speaker can call another Spanish speaker, that doesn't include foul language, a reference to sexual organs, or someone's sexual preference. "This is the reason why ... WE HAVE NO CONCEPT OF RACE ..." "... UNLIKE THE VILE ANGLOS." Which, I must say ... is one of the single most RACIST phrases I've seen on this, or any other platform ... from anyone, of any race, or ethnic group, in quite some time ... I assure you ... & I'm probably twice your age, & I've been around the block more times than the ice cream truck ... as we say in Estados Unidos, or El Norte. Is an "Anglo" the same as "Wero," or is "Anglo" just what RACIST Spanish speakers say when referring to white people from Englatera? The Mexicanos, & Salvadorenos I hang with don't use "Anglo" when we're talking about white people. Now the word Negro means black, like the "Ace of Spades," but what do you call black people, if you don't see them as a different race? ... Amigo maybe? or it is better to just be more informal, & just call all the Black dudes you see "Papa" ... or if you're from Puerto Rico, they use "Poppy" instead for guys that are Afro-Cubano. I love the part where you say ... "Spain made sure the SLAVES became Hispanic Christians ... blah, blah, blah." as if it was OK to work them to death, as long as their Spanish masters got them baptized at some point before the poor indios took their last breath ... YIKES! I mean it was bad enough that the illiterate swine herders that came over to the New World in the last few years of the 1400's, & the first half of the 1500's actually justified their brutal abuse of the innocent Indios they enslaved, & proceeded to work to death within a year, or two ... if they even made it past the first 6 months, it was considered a miraculous event, & some of the early Spanish land holders actually notified the Pope in Rome that they may indeed be on their way to sainthood, if one, or 2 of their other indios they owned could make it through a full 12 months as captive slaves, since they would then have 2, or 3 holy miracles associated with their pious lives on earth, but sadly none of the early Spanish land holders could ever manage to NOT work, or beat their slaves to death within the first year, or 18 months ... tops! The Tiaino that Columbus made contact with on his first voyage to the New World had all been ... shot to death by a Spaniard, stabbed to death with a sword, or swords by 1, or more Spaniards, worked to death by a Spanish slave driver, or mauled to death by 1, or more war dogs, while obeying the dirrect commands of 1, or more Spaniards, or starved to death by their Spanish slave owner, for refusing to work themselves to death, in fact only there were only 6 out of an estimated total population of nearly 15,000 Tiaino tribe members, who did not die directly, or indirectly {starved to death by their Spanish slave owner, or ripped to pieces by 1, or more Spanish war dogs, on the order{s} of 1, or more Spaniard{s}. Original documents written in either late 1492 or mid 1493, at the latest, recorded that those 6 Tiaino who did NOT die directly, or indirectly at the hands of a Spaniard were all females, & coincidentally every 1 of those 6 native women had taken their own lives, in a variety of gruesome methods. It seems each of those lucky surviving Tiaino females, between the ages estimated to be 13, or 14, & the oldest estimated to be in her late 20's, or early 30's, & all 6 of those gruesome female suicides took place once the young girl, or woman realized she had been raped by 1, or more Spaniards ... which is totally understandable, under any circumstances even if you are last known surviving Tiaino tribe member, apparently. After rather reluctantly being compromised into sexual relations with 4 soldiers, 3 common sailors, 2 cabin boys, & the assistant cook assigned to the compliment of Her Royal Magesty, Queen Isabella of Espana`s Caravelle Santa Maria, the last reported sighting of a Tiano Indio, was the sole surviving female, who was said to have calmly walked into a shallow lagoon, no more than 1 fathom in depth, in it's deepest recesses, at high tide, where between 100, & 200 reef sharks, each measuring roughly 6 feet from the tip of their tooth laden snout, to the tip of the tail fin, were already observed in the midst of the most violent feeding frenzy, as the Indian maid slowly strode into the shark frothed waters of an isolated tidal inlet, named from thence onwards as Senora Senator Elizabth Warren of the Massachusetts Colony Cove, & today, over 500 years later, any nautical chart, or large scale map of the Island of Hispanola still bares the name of that defiant Tiaino Indian girl, last of her kind. This was just the first of scores, if not 100's of individual genocides, or tribal extinctions to occur in lands claimed for the Spanish Crown, between the year 1493, & the defeat of the Spanish Naval forces, by a small US Naval contingent under the command of Admiral Perry, in the Battle of Mannilla Bay, in the Philipine archipelago, that thankfully brought the horror show that was the blood soaked theft of riches from defenseless indigenous peoples the world over, known for nearly 3, & 1/2 regrettable, repressive, & rapacious centuries ... as the Spanish Empire. All sources can be found, & verified in footnotes located in the pinned comment, at the head of this comment section. Muchos Gracias for reading thus far, ......... & ......... KOut

@@kellyowens1868 "+ "No concept of race" ... did you say? WE HAVE NO CONCEPT OF RACE ..."" Those are races? Those are ethnic groups you just mentioned, the Basque (like myself) identify as ethnic group because of common language and religion. "Indio" was an insult of behavior, nothing to do with race. Most "Indios" are fully Hispanized and barely used any more. "Which, I must say ... is one of the single most RACIST phrases I've seen on this, or any other platform ... from anyone, of any race, or ethnic group, in quite some time ... Now the word Negro means black, like the "Ace of Spades," but what do you call black people, if you don't see them as a different race? ... Amigo maybe? or it is better to just be more informal, & just call all the Black dudes you see "Papa" ... or if you're from Puerto Rico, they use "Poppy" instead for guys that are Afro-Cubano." Anglos are not a race, their ethnic group that became "white" when the Protestant reformation came along. Second, I am happy you said "white" means "Anglo," so we cut crap out that white mean European, when it always mean the "White Anglo-Saxon Protestant" who gave us liberalism, which you so much dislike. Fun fact, all the crimes you mention are first fabricated by Bartolomé de las Casas remotely

Impressive Dr Starkey. I remember at School marking Empire day / Commonwealth day, as well as May Day celebrations with maypole dancing, and indeed Whitsun or Whit week. An interesting proposition for opening up debate.

the decline in Christianity is a sign and perhaps a cause, of the decline of the West - every civilization that rises to the heights does so in the bosom of a religion. The Romans had a system (if you can call it that) of local religions and polytheism translated from the Greek ..... the dying modern West had Christianity
