The world is changing faster than at any other period in human history. We are blurring the lines between science fiction and reality more and more each day. In a world where human innovation is outpacing conscious leadership, critical thinking skills have never been more important yet they’re often not a priority in traditional education. In this talk we explore the idea that the way we’re educating our kids may be preparing them for today but it’s not setting them up for success in the world of the future and that the promise of education has been broken. Michael is a 20+ year technology entrepreneur and CEO with a formal education in fine art and painting. His experience and love for technology, psychology, nature, art & music shaped his unique perspective on work and life. Becoming a father opened his eyes to the shortcomings of traditional education to prepare a new generation for what he sees as a rapidly changing world and he discovered his why. Michael's mission is to inspire and engage people to become curious, capable, passionate, purposeful, and globally aware leaders, and to find true success in all aspects of their lives. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

There is no question, that the old teaching ways of memory capacity are wrong, and experential learning is what causes students to own the knowledge they gather. Good talk.

This is such a stark title but I understand what he means - especially with all the difficulties finding a job even once you've got a degree. Broken promises for sure.

I never really thought about how traditional education doesn't prepare us for the future. It's definitely a problem that needs to be addressed.

It does and it doesn't - there's certainly things we need to learn that are taught in traditional education, but there's a significant amount of things missing and that gap is widening. My talk is a call to action - to consider what our kids will need to be the leaders that we need and help them get those skills and mindset!

when I think about my high school experience very little of what I learned in class stuck with me- what did was the experiences with other students, dealing with the pressure of getting work done, etc. I think there's an opportunity for other students in the future to have a more enriching experience than just those aspects

I completely agree with the speaker that critical thinking is more important now than ever before. We need to teach our kids how to think, not just what to think.

You know, if we keep up this rate of innovation, by the time my grandkids are my age, they'll probably be attending classes on Mars and submitting homework via teleportation. Talk about taking distance learning to a whole new level!

Is critical thinking at odds with traditional education? I think the process of learning should be the key that drives the human mind to disern between fact and fiction. It should be the catalyst that drives us to stay on a true path, not a conspiracy journey.
