📜 The Brothers Gracchi, Final Fall, Part 6 - Extra History
Tiberius Gracchus the Elder has been overshadowed by his sons, but in his lifetime he had the most successful political career imaginable. Born just as the Second Punic War came to a close, he arrived on the political stage just in time to befriend the Scipio family during the Seleucid War. He secured a route of safe passage for their soldiers which led them to catch and defeat King Antiochus. The Scipios planted themselves in the east, dealing with the spoils of war and enriching themselves in the process. Upon their return to Rome, they were charged with corruption for accepting bribes, but Tiberius Gracchus the Elder had just been elected tribune of the plebs, and he voted their trial entirely. Scipio Africanus rewarded him by giving him the hand of Cornelia, his daughter and an amazing woman in her own right. Tiberius Gracchus went on the be elected aedile, and threw such lavish public games that the Senate passed a law restricting future games. It worked for him, though: he won his next election and became a praetor assigned to nearer Spain, where he launched a fierce and successful military campaign buffered by a land redistribution effort. In that way, he solved the underlying problems of poverty among the Celtiberians and secured peace for 25 years. For his success, he received a triumph and was elected consul, two of the highest honors in Roman politics. But here he played a dangerous game. Already allied with the Scipiones, he served as consul alongside their family's biggest rival: a Claudius. He won the game and formed a relationship that would later provide his sons with important allies. Next he went to Sardinia to protect against rebellious tribes, and again he succeeded. The Gracchi name was now honored in both Spain and Sardinia, a legacy his sons would rely upon. This won him a second triumph and a role as censor, after which he joined a traveling embassy of senators to assess Rome's client kingdom. Tiberius Gracchus used this opportunity to forge friendships with foreign kings, like the King of Pergamum who would one day form a key part of Tiberius's efforts to redistribute land. Finally, he won a second consulship, but here he made the mistake of screwing over a man whose son would one day lead the assault that killed Tiberius in the forum. At the end of his days, Tiberius Gracchus the Elder wasn't just a prominent senator, but one of the most powerful men in Rome. It was the duty of a son to surpass the fame of his father, which must have seemed impossible... but Tiberius and Gracchus, building on the legacy he left, did exactly that.
Special thanks to Mike Duncan for writing this episode! Check out his History of Rome podcast: thehistoryofrome.typepad.com/
P.S. If you've read this far, we think it's only fair we tell you that Mike Duncan is aware the proper Latin name for the Scipio family is "Scipiones" but he allowed us to shorten it to "Scipios" to make it easier for non-Latin speakers to understand. Cheers!

To add to Tiberius's story, it is said that one day he found 2 snakes on his bed, a male and female. Priests told him that if he killed the male he would die, and if he killed the female his wife Cornelia would die. Tiberius chose to kill the male, both because he loved his wife and because he believed his wife's youth should not be interrupted. He died shortly after. His wife Cornelia was so devoted to him and his memory she turned down a marriage proposal from Ptolemy, Pharaoh of Egypt and remained a widow. She also tried to talk Gaius out of becoming tribune and referred to her sons as her gems, and she is known as the ideal Roman matron. Learned all this in my college Classical Civilization course. Hope somebody might find it interesting!

Thanks to you and Mike Duncan for this episode! It was really interesting to get this extra context and see how Gracchus the elder's influence affected his sons. The BBC Rome series episode "Revolution" hinted at Gracchus the Elder's influence, but your episode really got into great detail to understand why the sons and so many others in the Roman world revered him. I hope you bring Mr. Duncan back again or bring in other guest writers with historic specializations. This was so nice!

I've had yet another idea for an extra history series, focusing on one of the greatest medieval travellers of the world, and a man who's name and exploits should be better known: Abū ʿAbd al-Lāh Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Lāh l-Lawātī ṭ-Ṭanǧī ibn Baṭūṭah, better known as Ibn Battuta. unfortunately I'm not a patron because I can't afford it. Yeah, every time "sub-see-kwent" came up it threw me out of the episode for a moment and made me lose focus on what Dan was saying following that. Of course one could also comment for that to be a recurring issue in an eleven and a half minute video means the script author could stand to invest in a thesaurus (or get someone to proofread it before production), knowledge of the historical topic notwithstanding.

That last bit was just like William Pitt the Younger (who really deserves a series or at least an episode). His dad (William Pitt the Elder) was insanely honoured and seen as a true hero. He had 100,000 people turn out to his funeral and, like Tiberius Gracchus the Elder, was a living legend for most of his life - nicknamed the great commoner. The weight of Pitt the Youngers father's achievements and legacy must have driven him to achieve what he did as quickly as he did

You know, I do understand the Romans fear of the Grachi bros. You could look at their father's actions as preparations for establishing a dynasty. If you do that all the children has have to do is seal the deal, pass a few dirty laws, make the populous love you a lot and bam, Rome has a king again. Maybe the Grachi weren't purely socialists, but tried to get a crown?

If you do read the history of Rome you would know the poor were suffering right??. The expansion of the land through constant warfare and the flow of slaves had made the powerful families rich right??. The rich held vast land and made their slaves do the labor work like farming. Because of this reason, the prices of items or food vastly dropped and mostly ordinary citizens were affected. Most of the citizens in the empire dependent on farming to produce daily income. They had no chance of competing against influential families, who held vast amounts of slaves and land. So, the ordinary citizen could do nothing but do other jobs which barely produced any money. Without money, they couldn't buy food and without food, they couldn't survive. They had no choice but to sell their land to wealthy or elite families for just some amount of money. The senate knew the problem yet they never solved the problem. This is why land reform was so popular among ordinary citizens. If only had the senate had solved the problem characters like Julius Ceaser would have a hard time gathering support from the public.

Well, I wouldn't want to appear obssesed over tiny details, but I have already noticed this in a few videos about the Roman Empire. The roman scutum didn't have a vertical handle like some medieval ones did, the handle that you griped was horizontally paced. So it would be really nice if the art team would keep this in mind for future entries regarding Rome, just a tiny detail, but we should always strive for more historical accuracy, especially since the change is so easy to make. Thanks in advance, and also thank you for the awesome content.

A lot of history podcasters have claimed him to be their inspiration and a gold standard in his niche field. Once you finish his History of Rome podcast he also has a new one called Revolutions that focuses on telling the story, what else, of Revolutions throughout the world. (Topics covered so far include, English, American, French, Haiti and now South America with Mexico coming soon.) If podcasts aren't your thing, he is also releasing his History of Rome podcast in book format (four volumes) with the first one is out now. He also has another book titled "The Storm before the Storm", scheduled for release next year that will cover Rome from 135 B.C to about 85 B.C.

You guys need to convince Dan Carlin of Hardcore History to do a EH show! You probably already listen to HH, but having him on one of my favorite youtube channels would be awesome. Love the work, keep it going. Also, after the first episode of Durlag I finally reinstalled Baldur's Gate for the first time since Jr High, you rock

You may find Ann Leckie's Ancillary trilogy very interesting, given the enthusiasm you have for these Roman episodes. The more of these I watch, the more I realize just how heavily based on Rome the Radchaai are. Also, it's a bloody cool series in its own right. Very interesting to see an author who understands, for instance, the concept of a post-labor economy.

Catherine the Great is a great story. She went from being a minor German noblewoman to the Tsarina of one of the largest empires in history.

an event doesn't have to be grand to be important. fire isn't exactly a treasure and yet has more importance than anything covered so far.

We've yet to see any videos over the discovery of antiseptics or the invention of alternating current - I believe you're spot on in your assessment. I think we'll definitely see more episodes in the future that cover the origin of concepts and breakthroughs, though.

Interestingly, Antiochus' (1:32) son is infamous as the villain in the traditional Jewish tale of Hanukah. The story goes that he tried to ban the Jewish religion and got overthrown.

Love the episode, but wished there were more about Elder Gracchus. His stunning accomplishments alone should have more than just one episode, unless the plan was to inspire us to do our own further research on him...then well played😉. For the triumph shouldn't the horses be white?

as an argentinean, i hope you get to cover both simon bolivar and jose de san martin equally in your future episode. they are the two biggest figures of the south american revolution from spain. one comming from the top of the continent and the other from the bottom, liberating country after country and finally meeting in peru. i think the story shines more when you follow both journeys at the same time besides that. im really happy you are going to cover a subject most of the rest of the world, i feel, doesnt really know about. much like i have met other cultures paths through your amazing videos (general yi ftw!)
