Unbelievable, I have never seen such intense acting and storytelling, almost as tempestuous as the book that I read when I was 15 years old. Incredible. Blows me right off my feet.

Beyond words! I wish I could be more articulate to express how tbk touched my soul when I first read it. Since then emerged in me this love to humanity and the desire to fight this mental war that we all face inside. And now this adaptation has added this touch of passion, intensity but also delicacy. I don't think any other production can reach the level of spiritual connection.

I just finished watching War and Peace. That is a very different world compared to the one depicted in "The brothers Karamazov". And that difference, in my view, reflects the changes in Russian society. By the time the latter was published, Alexander II had ascended the throne, abolished serfdom in Russia, and reorganized the judicial system, opening the courts to public audiences and, separately, granting greater freedom to the press. All of which were reflected in "The brothers Karamazov".

This masterful dramatization makes me want to read the book again. Not having seen the full three-part treatment, I am struck immediately by the inspired casting -- the old Fyodor Karamazov is a superb realization of the old rascal of the novel, and he delivers his lines with utter conviction. Ivan is overly intellectual; Dmitry is a bull; Ivan is innocent. And Smeryakov, Smerdyakov is a perfect snake.

After reading Notes From Underground, I see more clearly Katerina’s infatuation with Dmitri. She is in ‘love’ because she was insulted, so she needs to get back at him, to subjugate or tyrannise Dmitri so she is the more dominant, the nobler one. Good film series, just that foreigners would probably look more at the subtitles than watch the actual picture.

To some extent, yes. But in oversimplified manner.

Not a Russian speaker here but I had always wondered if the name Smerdyakov was also a play on the Russian word "smrt". (Pardon the oversimplified transliteration).

@@vladspb1861'war and peace' = voina i mir; voina (war), mir (peace, or world). Search: mir space station meaning.
