Some of these football players in America I mean some of the high school players are getting it over here you have to remember that steroids were rampant before they started testing form everywhere in America and I see rugby is pretty rough but even with helmets American football is different because back 20 years ago the receiver would be wide open defenseless soon as his fingers touched the football boom a 255 lb linebacker hits in full speed who runs a 4.5 40 @@hankgoldenshaft

As a blues and Raiders fan I grew up hating King Wally but loving him when playing for Australia. Then when I was in my early 20s and washing car windows in Brisbane during a tough time in my life he stopped and gave me some words or encouragement. Telling me things will get better for me and then giving me some two dollar coins which were shiny new. Things did get better for me and I was amazed at how down to earth and humble he is. So sad to hear this. I'm from Ireland and a rugby union fan for my whole life. But I know Wally Lewis and watching his classic games for the Maroons and Australia etc I always thought he was the greatest rugby player of all time. And I mean rugby player, union or league. Things have to change. The media and fans are at fault as well for the excitement and roaring when a huge head high hit goes in and they commentators yell their approval. And the nonchalant way they ready when a player is wobbly on his feet after a hit, "Oh he's got the bell rung!". That all HAS to end. Stop celebrating vicious hits, especially to the head.
@SilentHotdog28
@SilentHotdog28 Год назад
I think a big CLEAN hit is always going to be celebrated, but people are far more wary about head high hits these days, I've been to many Melbourne Storm games and most of the time whether it's a Storm player or the opponent that gets hit head high, everyone in the crowd is in audible and visible discomfort.

Wally remembered my name and stopped each time to have a chat. Even at the pub having a beer I called out to him from a window and he stopped talking with the adults and came over to talk to me and my parents. CTE is huge amongst American football players. My favorite player from the Chicago Bears Dave Duerson committed suicide because of his issues with CTE. He shot himself in the chest so doctors could study his brain. At the time CTE was a taboo subject. The NFL and players treated it almost like it was a hoax or a form of weakness to admit CTE was driving former players to do insane things like driving on the wrong side of the road and crashing into a semi truck tanker head on like Justin Strzelczyk which caused a fatal explosion. Im surprised CTE isnt a bigger issue amongst Rugby players like it is with NFL players but Im glad theyre shedding light on it and hopefully itll be accepted and wont be looked down upon like it was when it was first discovered here in the united states.. As an American Im not familiar with the sport, but surprisingly we did have a Rugby team at my high school. I remember going to the tryouts and thinking oh this is literally like football but without pads. If American football players are getting concussed and getting CTE even though they used helmets to protect their heads, I couldnt even imagine the concussion rate and possible CTE amongst Rugby players who wear no helmets. I remember at the tryout the only protection they had to offer was headgear to wear around your ears almost similar to the headgear I wore in collegiate wrestling with some padding that went around your head. Glad this guy is talking about it and getting the support. That way people can get the help they need. Thats the one thing I never liked about sports is making it seem like you're weak if you ask for help.

So what about the people that have never had head injuries and still have this problem? He will be remembered for years after his death, has made a fortune aswell. That's more then 95% of people will ever achieve, if everyone wrapped themselves in a blanket and never lived a life they wanted these issues would still be relevant. He's lived a great life and is remembered as the king of rugby league, that's more positive then any negative comment people can make about people's life choices.

Wait until the MMA guys get a little older. This is the only sport where you can knock an opponent down, then dive on him and keep pounding his head until the referee can drag you away.
@patrickmorgan4006
@patrickmorgan4006 Год назад
Boxers punch each other in the head for 48 minutes in a championship fight. MMA probably doesn't do as much damage in the short duration of the fights, and the referee is to usually slow to stop a fight, but we will cetainly see problems for some of the fighters.

@@patrickmorgan4006 When a boxer knocks an opponent down, he goes to a neutral corner while the referee determines whether the man is fit to continue. CTE will be a catastrophe for MMA fighters.
@patrickmorgan4006
@patrickmorgan4006 Год назад
@@teastrainer3604 Yeah, the boxer goes to a neutral corner, the referee gives an 8 count, and then the guy gets pummeled again until he is out on his feet or on the ground. And that 8 count can be done multiple times in a round and in a fight that lasts up to 48 minutes. In MMA, once the guy is defenseless, the fight is over. No 8 count to see if he can regain his senses enough to continue. And that is for punches and kicks that knock a guy down. Many fights end in a submission hold with no blows to the head. And MMA fights are nowhere near 48 minutes. CTE will be no worse for MMA than for any other sport.

@@dana102083 CTE is not cause by cutting off the blood flow to the brain. It is caused by the brain moving around and crashing against the inside of the skull.

I can't believe they aren't wearing actual football playing clothes and protective gear like helmets and stuff, i know they can still get CTE even wearing it but have better chance with the protective gear.

Maybe who knows but protective head gear actually can give players even more confidence to hit hard etc and the NFL is littered with ex players having CTE

@@jackohere1878 yeah maybe so. 😞
@patrickmorgan4006
@patrickmorgan4006 Год назад
No, not really. The brain will move around inside the skull when any hit is made. Wearing a helmet doesn't change that. The helmet protects the skull, not the brain. The hit doesn't even have to be to the head itself to do damage to the brain.
