During the Medieval times, there was a huge scandal that rocked King Edward II of England. He was a man who favoured specifically one man, Piers Gaveston who was considered his closest courtier. There were rumours that Gaveston and the King were lovers, however Gaveston was awarded huge amounts of wealth and land. He was made the Earl of Cornwall, and became very rich and other Barons and members of the King's court were very jealous.
Gaveston was exiled from England a number of times, but when he returned following his third exile he was seized at Scarborough Castle. The Earl of Warwick then condemned him to death and he was held inside of Warwick Castle. After this he was taken out of the castle, and in a nearby forest he was executed and hacked to death by two soldiers. After finding out about this Edward II was furious with the execution of his best friend.

Piers was hated by a lot of powerful nobles, him being a very good jouster who unhorsed many of them and his horrid disrespectful insults didn't help. As far as I am concerned, Piers got what he deserved.

How some nobles became hostile towards him was from a jousting tournament it’s not clear whether piers just had a better squad or just had too many but in the end he won and as a result some became hostile towards him

The rumors that Ed and Piers were lovers didn't start until over a hundred years after Piers death. At the time the issue was Piers was usurping the role of the nobles in English politics.

I think the mistake experts make a lot is compair medievil culture to modern culture. It was a different world back then. I'm not saying homosexuality didn't exist, but because chivalry was at the heart of medieval culture, men behaved very differently toward other men. Back then, men showing physical affection to other men was seen as masculine. Today, modern heterosexual men would not dream of kissing another man on the cheek of giving gifts of favour because times have simply changed and men along with it. The ushering in of Georgian and the Victorian era is the real cause of such a change in culture. This idea that Edward the 2nd was gay I believe, is just a very modern understanding of a medievil world and of chivalry.

They were most likely not gay. Medieval culture was different. It was normal for men to share a bed for example. If they really were lovers then we’d surely have some documents of obvious homosexuality from his actual reign, not from many many years after his death. An openly, or otherwise, gay Medieval English king would certainly have been exceptionally out of the ordinary and it would have been heavily documented and scrutinized in England, at the very least. Its more likely that Edward felt indebted to piers, for some reason, or felt a disdain for lower nobility.

Do we feel anything other than detached pity for the moth that flies into the flame, immolating itself? It, too, is 'just being itself'. To its own ruin. Do we run around extinguishing every open flame, leaving nourishment uncooked, illnesses to follow, all to accommodate the poor moth who can't figure out that flames are to be avoided? Of course not; That poor moth has a role in the ecosystem, its existence is not just about itself, and it must therefore learn that flames are to be avoided at all costs. Anything other is unnatural. Gaveston and (more importantly) Edward II were poor moths.

@@tradcatpat2385 You really comparing gay people to moths? That our existence is to be murdered since that's our apparently place in society? You're fucking disgusting if so, that isn't a fair comparison since we exist as every other person can, and things can change to accommodate easily. You blaming us for our own discrimination is so incredibly fucked up
