Marco Island in Florida is a hotspot for burrowing owls (Athene cunicularia) where they are protected. Marco Island is a highly built up area but any available patches of grassland have cordoned off space for the owls to make their home. Being so heavily populated the owls have the security and are less likely to be predated from the air. This family of adults with 5 almost fully grown young are right near the high-rise apartment blocks on the seafront. But the majority of people (mainly tourists) walk right past them. As we were photographing, we drew in a crowd who then became aware of the owls.
