Installing The Bush Company AX27 Rooftop Tent using customised gutter mount brackets, fitted directly to a Nissan GU Patrol.
After checking out all the roof top tents at the Melbourne - National 4x4 Outdoors Expo in mid August 2022, we were blown away with the quality and ease of the @thebushcompany AX27 roof top tent that the guys at Ultimate Offroad (Ferntree Gully) had on display. We’ve had so many uncertainties in deciding what would be the best sleeping set up for our upcoming trip to the Cape in August 2023 and when we decided that we didn’t want to tow anything, a rooftop tent was about the only option: other than the swag. We love the swag but it’s heavy and awkward and takes time to set up, albeit not long, but more time than the AX27 - plus, you’re on the ground with snakes, crocs and who knows what else 😂
We also had other thoughts flapping around; would we use it enough to make it worth the investment, because they’re not bloody cheap, and would it be possible to modify the boat trailer as a second home for it, so it’s not just on the top of the patrol and that we can use it when we’re stationary, avoiding a pack up and set back up to use the car. And, even the aesthetics; was it too wide for the Patrol, too heavy, too bulky looking? Can we keep our bedding in it? All really valid points to consider and after lots of chatting we bit the bullet and contacted the guys at Ultimate last Sunday night after the expo. They honoured the show price and next minute, we own an #ax27 (Big thanks to Simon and Ben at Ultimate Offroad)
We’re itching to take it on its maiden voyage.

Great video, mate, missed the most interesting. How did you rotate it from one side to another at home?) Thanks for the content!

@@nom_ben_livingthedream The RTT is quite heavy. At the start of the video it's laying on the rails and later the rails on the top. What you've been using to rotate it?

Yes you are right they are heavy. With a few helping hands I flipped it over on the trailer and then used a forklift to place it on the Patrol. It’s still on the patrol as we speak. If you head over to our Insta gram page you can see it setup. 👌

Hey mate, can I ask how it's been holding up with just the brackets? Doesn't sag in the centre without racks or crossbars? Got an ax27 as well and am thinking about doing the same setup, love your idea!

Thanks for watching. It’s been holding up really well. I’ve been on many trips away now on some tough Vic high country tracks and rough terrain. The only thing I’ve changed is the height of the brackets to lower it another 25mm, other than that it been great. The AX27 has been built super tough as you know and it doesn’t sag in the middle at all.

@@WaitWhat99 One of the reasons for us purchasing the AX27 was the fact that you can leave all your bedding and pillows inside and close it up. We store shoes in bags and the ladder in there also. It’s bloody awesome. It’s solid and I haven’t seen any sagging there’s support bracing welded into the tent frame so it should be fine.

It’s honestly been amazing. I haven’t had any problems with sagging these AX27’s are all welded with a solid frame underneath. We will upload a video soon with some setup content.
