Imagine if there were predator sloths that hunt these plant eater sloths. We would see thrilling slow motion hunt, and kill. I can already imagine the documentary comments like " the predatory sloth has caught up with the sloth, and begins to bite" 10 minutes later " looks like the predatory sloth has fallen asleep in the middle of the bite, giving the plant eater sloth a chance to escape" 5 minutes later "looks like the prey has also fallen asleep, now, whoever wakes up first is likely to win the conflict" 1 day later " the predatory sloth just woke up , and is about to continue the biting" 30 minutes later " the prey is loosing this battle, but....oh wait, the predatory sloth has to go and defecate"

I know this is two years late, but... Did you know? Sloths are also excellent at camouflage. They have mastered the ability of standing so incredibly still, that they've become invisible to the eye. In fact, their movement is so slow, that it's imperceptible.

@@L.Spencer it's really about nutrient density of the food. A species can grow larger and consume more total nutrients, become less metabolically active and require less nutrients or change nutrient source to something more energy dense. Sloths being adapted for life in the trees weren't really able to grow any larger or heavier, and for whatever reason couldn't or didnt want to change their diet so they had to slow down all the metabolic activity in their body to compensate. There are usually multiple branches that evolution developed down with different solutions to common problems.
