They still did some great stuff, but his departure was the beggining of the end. The Byrds for me have great material, but I also have a strong nostalgia feeling missing what they could have done. They seemed a bit out of focus on later years and too troubled between the members.
This was the Byrds at their most magical; a Gene Clark tune that rivals the Beatles or Dylan, McGuinn.s jangling Richenbacker guitars and Crosby's ever shifting harmony......2 and 1/2 minutes of perfection!
Chris was brilliant! He was lead of a country band called “Desert Rose Band” … look up One Step Forward; One Step Back”…. my grand passions life: Music and Dogs! Chris Hillman was sooo cool! ❤️😊
@@cherixbiggs5819… He’s STILL alive and making music! He had a late career resurgence with Tom Petty, about a year, year and a half before he passed away. (Tom, not Chris…)
Dave Crosby's harmonies really shine on this one! It's one of my favorite songs e.v.e.r. If anybody ever went down the road of a broken heart through any kind of loss -- this song describes the pain.
@@tomwilson8607 Tom, I'd heard that The Beatles favorite group was the Byrds but I didn't know they were John's particular favorite. That's great! What's your source for that? Chris
Gene Clark was an especially gifted songwriter. Roger McGuinn made the 12 String Guitar magical sounding like no one else. David Crosby could out sing anyone on harmony. To bad David had such a volatile personality to be around for very long. Later Chris Hillman joined them writing ,singing, and playing. They were a multi talented band. Always going places other bands hadn't been. Been a fan since 1965. Still a fan in 2024.
Even if McGuinn called the early years of The Byrds a Beatles copy band, they had by far some of the best vocal harmonies that just can't compare to the Beatles. The sound is unmistakable.
From the best songwriter in the Byrds and at that time. What a great song. A perfect, simple, tasteful arrangement that is likely mostly attributable to McGuinn who knew that a great song needs little embellishment. More great harmony from Crosby. Witness the invention of Folk-Rock.
I loved this song when I was in Vietnam because I was always thinking about my fiance but after I'd only been there three months she dumped me. I still love this song even to this day.
@@rudolphguarnacci197 it is equally devastating to be the girl dumped by the guy. Worst pain ever is a broken heart. - a female dumpee from 1971 at age 19.5. I pray you had a happy ending. God bless🙏🏻🐾🐾
There are almost no words to describe how this song makes me feel: magical lonely reflective longing nostalgic. Can’t really put my finger on it but I think it’s one of the most perfect and beautiful feeling songs I’ve ever heard in my life. 52 now. I have loved Thr Byrds since I was 12. Made me go out and buy a Rickenbacker 360/12!!!!!!
Daytime just makes me feel lonely At night I can only dream about you Girl you're on my mind nearly all of the time It's so hard being here without you Words in my head keep repeating things that you said Wen I was with you And I wonder is it true do you feel the same way too It's so hard being here without you, being here without you Though I know it won't last I'll see you some day It seems as though that the day will come never But there's one thing I'll swear though you're far away I'll be thinking about you forever The streets that I walk on depress me The ones that were happy when I was with you Still with all the friends I know and with all the things I do It's so hard being here without you being here without you
This song has taken on new meaning for me in dealing with the fact that fiancé is gone and she's never coming back but i know someday I will see her again
Geez I remember hearing this when the album came out and it was so haunting. Beautiful harmony. David's Gretsch is doing some great rhythm work out the right side.
Losing Clark was a big blow as he was their best songwriter. Firing Crosby wiped out their harmonies. All they had left after that was Mcguinn's Richenbacker, and that wasn't enough.
What I don't understand, is why they didn't replace Crosby. There are so many people who harmonize, you would think that they would have found one? Maybe I'm missing something?
@@TheAerovons I love the harmonies! I would love to ask Roger or Chris if they tried to recruit a high tenor voice. Attn: Chris, Roger if you are reading this....
Mostly session musicians, McGuinn was the only one to actually play an instrument on this album. That's just how the US music industry did things in the day, same with Beach Boys albums and many others.

Charly Garcia's version of this was wonderful as was his version "Set You Free This Time." I wish he had done covers of more of the Byrds songs...specifically those of Gene Clark!!
