Fantastic precise work as always. Could you angle the lintel/window header downwards a little for water run off and then when you screw into window up rights at a slight angle, the screws would sit flush on the lintel angle/top too?

Brother, this house design is absolutely amazing! Always am stunned by your simplistic designs of beauty. See a lot of lessons taken from your book recommendations, will you make a small nook or rope/safety net area in clear story, to relax or as viewpoint? The ultimate samurai build, that's for sure! Wish I can come over to help when the you start building!

For as far as you or anyone cares. It's all fun and games trying to make "funny" comments on my part but I also want to share that this journey is very inspiring for me to chase my own dreams. Living on my own lakeside (puddle in my front yard-concrete jungle-terraced house-style) Thousands of kilometers/miles away the vibes are coming across. Started renovating my own house, doing a little woodworking here and there, and making more time getting better at it by working less hours behind a desk. So thank you very much. Keep it up. I wish you and your family all the best.

I don't want to second guess your judgement but I put a bigger cap on my woodstove pipe and it brought the sparks down to the wooden shingles. Instant problem. It looks like you have a steel roof but you've got a lot of nice wood. Maybe a air swivel cap. Thanks for your time you spend filming your great work. Have at least two fire extinguishers at hand. That's what saved our house. I wish you well.

The next time that you clean out your little woodstove, take a damp sponge and dip a corner into the grey ash. Take that and rub onto the inside of your glass. The lye in the ash and the mild abrasive of the same will give you a sparkling clean fireplace window with no scratching. You're welcome. I told you it would work.
@caide
@caide Год назад
Yes, that actually works as the best and easiest cleaning for the glass, wall tiles, windows and porsline.

@caide
@caide Год назад
@@jumpleadsx2 try to use water also and give it a couple of tries and change to a clean rag in between.
@HugoHugunin
@HugoHugunin Год назад
@Caj Koskinen Simply use clean water on a rag. Sort of like getting rid of tile haze after grouting. I should have warned folks to wear gloves. In the "good ol' days, my great-grandmoth would save the ashes from her wood fired stove. She would lay down a bed of straw and put the ashes on top in a big barrel with a tiny hole in the bottom. She slowly dripped rainwater through and collected the lye that dripped out of the bottom. Good for cleaning glass, making soap, or dissolving those bodies stacked in your basement. 🤣
@caide
@caide Год назад
@@HugoHugunin We warm up two houses with wood and we have 4 fire places + sauna. We have a lot of ashes but we give them to some plants. They like when the soil PH is going better for them.

Hey Samurai, I have followed and loved every one of your designs. I’m an architect and when I saw your design I was fascinated by the structural knowledge you have applied from your wood working background. With regards to the design, and as a means to strengthen your idea, I suggest two things: 1. Use diagonal pieces of lumber at each corner of your walls in order to protect it from side to side movement. This is a key structural element. 2. On the elevated central roof for the natural lighting, it would be highly recommended that these windows can open (perhaps automated due to height). This will allow the interior heat of the house to rise and exit through these windows, allowing a natural cooling of the home and a passive ventilation system excellent for wooden homes The design is beautiful and I’m sure you’ll make a true masterpiece out of it.

In my old house in Portland, I had three skylights.. When I had the roof replaced (with half a mind of getting the house ready for sale sometime in the future which I did!) I finally bought (manually) retractable skylights for the stairwell (20' above the low end of the 2 flight stairway to the half basement) . One in the kitchen, and one in the master bathroom. The one above the stairwell sucked up air from the basement sliding door which I had locked in a slightly opened position. In hot summer days (and Portland got it a few years!) it would remain in the upper seventies downstairs WITHOUT using AC with the convection effect. I had a hideabed there with a thick memory foam mattress and it was sooo comfortable for sleeping. Heckuva man cave with the dueling big screens and stereo system with Dolby 5.1. And it was all fresh air. It's just an idea for you going forward.

Before you dig foundations please consider a house that takes full advantage of the views. If you designed a long house facing the lake with all the bedrooms and living spaces facing the lake with bathrooms, corridors, storage and utility rooms behind and have a huge overhanging roof on the lake side with lots of decking and folding glass doors on to the deck. Believe me, looking at trees gets old quickly but having a ever changing, far reaching landscape to look at is just amazing and very good for the soul.

im not gonna lie, when i saw the 'clear story' from the outside i honestly thought it was gonna be a pergola area with stairs leading up to it from the inside. maybe 1/2 walls with removable glass and screens. what a view and what a space to enjoy outdoors in the summer if it were even possible. the rendering looks incredible. love the design. God bless.

I was thinking the same thing! A steel spiral staircase if it wouldn't clash with the open layout-- and great idea Andre, ventilation to save on HVAC would be a practical case. I think creating another space within the square footage limitations going upwards would be a good way to allow the boys and maybe mom and dad to have another space to be an option for lounging, reading, etc. Edit: obviously you've got the outdoors for when it's pleasant but for those winter months and rainy seasons when you're more cooped up :)

Looking good... WOODHEAT: I don't know if you're familiar, but have a look at "masonry heaters". They're extremely efficient, a short hot burn every 12 hours and use only a fraction of the wood to heat. They can be built in virtually any size to suit any space. Even your tiny little cabin. Or you next build(s).
