** TODAY'S PUZZLE **
Caduceus by PjotrV is a 100% rated puzzle on Logic Masters Germany and for good reason. This is simply superb sudoku AND it involves not one but two snakes :) Do give it a try at the link below:
app.crackingthecryptic.com/su...
Rules:
Normal sudoku rules apply. Furthermore, there are two snakes (snake A and B) in the grid. One is an 'Equal Sum Line' Snake (see below) and the other is a 'German Whisper Line' Snake (again, see below). The solver must determine which is which. Each snake is an orthogonally connected set of cells (the starts and ends are marked) and each snake MUST visit every 3x3 box. The snakes cannot touch themselves, even diagonally. The snakes may touch each other but they do not cross each other. The outside clues give the sum of the NON-snake cells in that direction. The squares give the number of the NON-snake cells in that box. On an 'Equal Sum Line', digits have an equal sum N within each box the line passes through. On a German Whisper Line, adjacent digits must have a difference of at least 5.

@steve470
@steve470 2 года назад
36:24 for me. A couple ways Simon could have made things easier on himself: When testing if there were four equal-sum cells in box 4, it would have forced two high digits next to each other on the whisper snake. Additionally, the whisper snake taking three cells in box 4 forced its polarity earlier, as there was only one low digit available in that box. Earlier, as soon as a snake was taking up eight cells of row 8, it needed to have a 5 on it, and therefore couldn't be the whisper snake.

The medical symbol is a single snake and doesn't have wings on top of it, and that's called the Rod of Asclepius The Caduceus (also called the Herald's Wand) is a staff held by Hermes/Mercury and is the symbol of trade, eloquence, negotiation, wisdom, gamblers, liars, thieves, and alchemy. Today it's most commonly a symbol of logistics The reason for the confusion is because some people in the field don't have much interest in Classics, and so they've frequently applied the wrong symbol to their buildings out of ignorance

At about 40:00 when you were mulling over whether the three cells in box 4 column 2 summed to 13 or 14, I was really hoping that you'd notice that if it was 13, requiring a 157, that would necessitate putting a 1 in r8c2, to complement the 38 sum in r8, therefore breaking the puzzle.
@AvatarBowler
@AvatarBowler 2 года назад
I’m failing to understand why a 1 is necessary in that case. Could you show how that works? Side note: you’re right that it doesn’t work, but the way I disproved it was following through what would happen if 1-5-7 was used. I noticed r7c2 would have to be a 4 and the other 2 blue cells in the column would be a 2-3 pair. The 3 would have to go in r8c2 to ensure the 13 sum works, which forces the 2 square cells to be a 4 and a 5. The last 4 cells in the row are a 1-2-8-9 quad, which is already broken. The 1 and 8 could go with the 4, but 5 + 2 + 9 ≠ 13, so now we’re in trouble. 😂
@dkamm65
@dkamm65 2 года назад
@@AvatarBowler It would require a 1 because of the equal sum rule. Simon explains the logic in the video, but equal sums imply that all of the blue cells in boxes 7, 8, and 9 total to a number divisible by 3. If box 7 is x, 7+8 is 2x, and 7+8+9 is 3x. The 7 in r8 means that the rest of row 8 sums to 38, so we need to add a digit to reach a multiple of 38. The options are 1, to reach 39 (13x3), or 4, to reach 42 (14x3). Any higher multiple would need a 7 which is not available in the box, or a two digit number. And of course if you choose a 1 to make the equal sum be 13, you would also need a 1 to make that sum in box 4, due to the restriction on the other digits.

52:09 finish. Loved the logic on this one. I actually drew two different possibilities, going in opposite directions, for the two snakes (when I started the puzzle, I mean... I didn't keep them there). One thing that I wrongly assumed (though wound up being correct) was that each snake could only enter each box once. I'm not going to re-hash all of the things that were mentioned to Simon, but I found a few of them of which others were speaking, and it definitely helped. Excellent!

There was a simple way to deduce which line was which once Simon forced the blue line to go straight along row 8. Because of the 5 in box 7 was placed, it meant that the 5 of row 8 was forced onto the blue line. And german whisper lines cannot have a 5 on them.

Some minor point at 34:23: When you talk about the 3/4 pair and the 1/2/5/6 tetromino, you could have seen that the two purple digits in box 4 would have been impossible, as they both would have been high and therefore broken the German whisper. Keep up the videos!

I love how through postponing "doing sudoku" to the max it took until 55:40 to figure out the blue-box total. Through sudoku on box 1 the answer had been available for quite a while. Because where does the 7 go in box 1? It goes next to the 4, creating a 47 pair. The other blue cell is a three, thus 3+4+7=14. That could even be determined before the 4 got its place, because the other two cells next to the three had to add up to 10 or 11. But because they had to contain a 7, the options were a 37-pair and a 47-pair. The 37-pair is excluded because by sudoku two 3's are not allowed in a box. Mark does this stuff on purpose though. Just to make us feel as smart as he is. :P

Like everyone else is saying, box 4 needs low digit on german whisper's line which makes 3 cells with 4 or lower outside the blue line. You can't make 4 blue cells add up to 13 or 14 with this restriction, so that makes r4c3 purple. I totally loved this puzzle!
@tedg1278
@tedg1278 2 года назад
Near 35:00 when considering whether the cell R4C3 can be part of the blue equal sums snake, including it in the snake requires the sum to be 14, the 2 outside digits being 3 and 4, and the 4 blue snake digits in the box being 1, 2, 5, 6. This can be ruled out very shortly by noting that the "whisper" snake has 2 cells in the box once of which must be a low digit.

This puzzle was very pretty. Interestingly, I had a massively different solve path to Simon, especially so considering they're normally very close.

At 52:52, r7 needs a 5, and it has to be in box 9. That would have forced exactly 4 green cells in box 9, and placed the 5 since it can't be on a whisper line. That also would have forced a 5 3 6 triple onto the sum line in box 8, since a 5 and a 3 could only go with another 5 if you try making the sum 13.

Rule clarification, please: “… they MUST visit every 3x3 box.” Does that mean that BOTH of the snakes much EACH visit every box? Or does it mean that every box must be visited by AT LEAST one of them? (I haven’t started the video yet - hoping to solve cold, as usual)

At 34:24, a much simpler way to disprove 14 with a blue in r4c3 is that only 7, 8, and 9 are left to put in box 4, and that'd break the German whisperness.

Great break-in, I'm guessing that sober Simon would have recognized early that the equal sum snake on row 8 summed to 38 and would need r7c2 to be 1, 4, or 7 to make a number divisible by 3.
@dontmindme2844
@dontmindme2844 2 года назад
And sober Simon might have noticed that the "13" equal sums puts a 1 in that box meaning a 157 = 13 in box 4 would repeat the 1s.

Simon could have figured out what value N had way earlier than he did, as soon as he determined that column 2 in box 4 was either 157 or 257. If it were a 157, adding to 13, that would have set a 1 in r7c2 (to make the snake cells in boxes 7, 8 and 9 add to 39). But then there would be two 1's in column 2, breaking the puzzle. Instead of doing that, he continues the puzzle, then finds a roundabout way to set r7c2 as a 4 using the boxes on the right... and then still needs additional logic to determine what N is, instead of the logic he used to get the 14 pencil marks in the cell in the first place. Never change, Simon. Never change.

I got the parity of the whisper line from box 4. It had too many digits of one type for there to be more than one more on the line in that box. Also, that 14 in box 7 was set linked to the total of the equal sum line but one of the possibilities has a conflict with the contents of the line above it so I was able to fix the sum earlier.

The first time in awhile I wasn't spooked off by a longer solve. At an hour and 18 it's not my best time ever, but there was a water break in there so I won't hold it against myself too much. Enjoyed watching the solve! Did a handful of things in a slightly different order to Simon (e.g. using the 4 sum clue for row 6 to purple-ize r6c9 a little earlier) but otherwise about the same, just slower.

Wonderful puzzle, which I actually managed to solve. Upon watching the video, I kicked myself for not realizing that the polarity of the lower German snake segment forced it for the not-yet-connected upper segment. On the other hand, I think I improved on Simon's methodology by designating a color as "unidentified snake", which would have caused the penny to drop sooner in row 6 for him.

Seems that the parents of Cracking the Cryptic viewers were quite busy on September 5th of [insert year]. In all seriousness though, I'm excited for the video! Funnily enough, yesterday was the first time I ever successfully solved a snake sudoku (That's Sum Slithering by AndreasV), because for whatever reason I seem to struggle with these types of rule sets. So with that in mind I don't think I'm ready to give this one a go, but I'm looking forward to watching this and hope that some of the beautiful logic I will surely witness in this video will help equip me to solve more Snake puzzles in the future :)

It is probably somewhere else in the comments, but just in case: with a little bit more of sudoku, the sum of the equal sums line was detectable much earlier - the 7 in r8c1 and the 257 triple in r456c2 pushed a 7 in r123c3, with r1c3 ruled out already (I think it was by the snake line polarity), so in box 1 there was a 7 and a 3 on the equal sums line, so there could not be another 3 which would have been necessary for a sum of 13. That being said - anothere wonderful puzzle and an entertaining solve video.
@MatteoBoschi
@MatteoBoschi 2 года назад
I used a diffent (easier?) way to get the equal-sum-line value: 7 must be in r2-3c3, along with a 3 in r3c2: 13 is not possible without repeating a 3. Great puzzle and great solve, as usual.

So, as many as 81 swigs to a puzzle. Assuming Simon doesn't significantly lose the ability to continue until alcohol poisoning takes over. I think we'd lose him about halfway through the Miracle Sudoku... However, the notion of drunken puzzlers in mental combat does have some appeal to it, I must admit. Maybe there's some kind of cross-over with the Try channel, with Simon and Mark joining various Irish people in solving tequila slammer sudoku puzzles.

This is the first time I have legitimately spotted something before Simon that turned out being correct. Normally what I think I spot ends up being utter nonsense… As soon as we know that R7C2 is either 1 or 4, AND R4/R5/R6C2 is either made up of 1/5/7 OR 2/5/7, we actually know for a fact that R7C2 is 4. R8[-R8C1] sums to 38, and R8[+R7C2] has to be divisible by 3. That is how we know that R7C2 is either 1 or 4. If R7C2 is 1, then the equal sum total has to be 13, but R4/R5/R6C2 becomes 2/5/7 which sums to 14. Therefore, R7C2 must be 4, and the equal sum total is 14.

At 30:00, the discussion of the line type could be boiled down to: Oh, look! There's a 7 outside the grid, and that means R8C1=7, and forces a 5 onto the blue line, so it's equal sums.

The snakes are an orthogonally connected set of cells.. I understand that "snake" could be self explanatory to some but for me I saw no reason why it couldn't have a T shape (or revert back on itself if you wish) if not mentioned in the rules.. So I got stuck and watched the video, shouted at you for all the missed logic in box 4 fixing colors and polarity very early on hehe but I only shout because I love you dearly Simon, thank you for the share!
