The engineer survived by staying onboard the train. The conductor jumped the wrong way, hit his head on a rock, and died. The brakeman survived, but later died of smoke inhalation. It also wasn’t the 3rd worst crash in railroad history. Not even close. The cause was a kink in the air hose, not faulty brakes.
