This is what you call absolutely hot, a smoking performance! These are the type of singers and musicians that should be getting national attention, that should be on the Grammies, and American Music Award shows. If they were, I'm sure many many more people would watch!
Unfortunately its bands like this..fucking balls out covers like this...( and dude this is as balls out as it gets) that get ignored largely. The music industry has their autotuned homogenized artists ...and bullshit algorithms to determine what top 40 radio stations should play. Its total crap.
My wife and I went on our first date at a Honeydrops show at the Roxy in LA in 2014. We ponied up to the bar and bumped shoulders with an extremely nice lady, got to talking, took a couple rounds together. It was Grace Love, the amazing singer in this video. She got on stage with the Honeydrops later that night. Cheers to her and Lech and tithe band, what an amazing rendition of my favorite Ray song!
I just found these people today, this is about the 6th song I've clicked on it, had I known it was a cover I might not have, I always go for the originals. People have said my standards are too high I say it's because I've seen James Brown, Jimi Hendrix and many more. I already like more of their catalog then a lot of very famous artists. This gave me goosebumps. That's how that song is done and it's probably the closest we'll get to Margie's performance, which I can't even begin to get close to. You have to rip out your soul to get the passion she put into that.
I usually do not like covers of songs but this one is fantastic..what is really cool is the vocals are reversed, a girl sings lead and a man does the back up part and it has as much heart and soul as the original......I bet Ray Charles smiles down on The California Honeydrops every time they perform this song

Patrick Coffey I think it may have been Nappy Brown. His recording preceded Charles's perhaps by as much as 3 or 4 years. Wikipedia would have that info. He generally gets composer credit on recorded versions, iirc. Nappy was performing until recently, and there's a RU-vid clip of him doing an 18 minute version the song on a blues festival stage, a portion while lying on his back lol. Fantastic performer. Now, he could well have heard someone sing some of the lyrics in a club and refined it into the song we know now.

NOTE: I know Grace is not on tour any more, but if you ever get the chance to see the California Honey Drops live, in a small venue, DO NOT MISS OUT. it will not be long before the chance to see them in their natural habitat (small, intimate venues) will be gone as they are already playing larger, more expensive and less intimate venues. Shout out to the Genius Ray Charles I think he would have loved this smoking hot version of his classic. Love the collaberation of Grace Love and Jimmy James With the CA Honeydrops . I would love to see both groups live. I really hope others will do as I am going to do support these artists by attending their shows and buying their music..

The Ray Charles version is a cover as well, the original was written and recorded by Nappy Brown in 1957 two years before Ray Charles’ version. History needs to be corrected sometimes.
