This is the bird that started my bird fever. I lived out to Washington and discovered a family in my yard. They get so plump this time of the year. Seeing them in snow is something else too
This is Califia’s Quail. A regal bird. The state of California should make trafficking and gaming of this bird *illegal* and a *felony offense* . It’s *cultural* and regional fauna. Sacred.
The coolest thing about quail is that they move about like a little military unit. They travel in herds of maybe up to a dozen and they always keep one stationed up high to keep an eye out and warn the rest. And they prefer to walk rather than fly so you often see them marching in a little line.
Scott Johnson I have seen huge coveys of California quail on the road where I live here on the central coast of California. One time I managed to count 60 something before they began to mix with new comers from the side of the road. There had to be more than 80. The other thing I noticed immediately about the behavioral difference between California and Bobwhite quail is that California quail are much more arboreal and fly more. I love everything about CA quail. They and their calls are beautiful.
Hans Johansen You are so right. I have 46 free range chickens. I throw scratch out for the chickens and quail. I currently have a small covey of between 8 and 10 that come twice a day at least. In the summer the parents bring their babies. It's so fun to watch and listen to them. I have seen some shocking behavior from some of them. A pair came in with a clutch of 8 babies one evening. The babies were still mostly down, but had their flight feathers. As the family went about eating the scratch a single male came in. The dad tried to drive him away but seemed to want to keep an eye on the kids more than drive the interloper away. The next thing I knew, the little tramp hen deserted her mate and her offspring and left with the other male. She never rejoined them. She would come in with the new male. The dad would come in with the babies. They came from totally different directions. It was sad, but that father quail was amazing.
We have a male california quail that we hatched from egg named Mr cheep cheep x beautiful bird! Lives in our house as our pet, incredibly tame, will come when called and loves to perch on my hand and preen himself! part of the family now ❤️
Hi Queen Quail. I also have a male California Quail that was given to me at about 1-2 days old, by a friend that had found him, lost from his family. He is now 12 weeks old, and is my house pet, along with a few parrots, a dog, and a rabbit. Do you keep Mr Cheep Cheep in a bird cage? If not, what do you keep him in? Also, what do you primarily feed him? Thank you for any information you can provide!
@@aliciaolivares4906 They can be expensive since its best to get them in groups, just like with any outdoor bird. I'd suggest getting them from Murray McMurray hatchery, their birds are very well bred. You probably already got the birds though since you replied a year ago.
i just about bought one from auction, however a friend talked me out of it claiming they do not make good pets. I think i will listen to her less frequently as she doesnt seem to know what she is talking about very often.
One of the best wildlife videos on RU-vid! No unnecessary music and dramatic slow motion and repeat crap. Just the birds doing their thing with their sounds and sounds of other birds. It felt like I was there. Sometimes less is more. Very well done!
Had a moment one morning as I was getting into my car. A horde of baby quails came swarming towards me eventually running around and over my feet then I believe the mother wasn't too happy. She quickly flew by inches away from my face almost poking my eye out! 😊 still was amazed never the less.
I discovered a male and female California quail in my front yard recently. They seem to have settled in underneath a photinia. I'm hoping to give them enough space to where they can feel comfortable enough to reproduce there.it's been enjoyable seeing him out there with a little feather dangling over their beaks and their unique noises that they make.
I'll always remember seeing a California quail family (near JPL, Pasadena, 50 years ago), 6 chics following in a line, ... till the day I die, I am thankful to God for creating them🕊🙏
HI , Thank you for sharing. I am really blessed, for I get to see quails almost every day. I live right by the Beautiful Smith River in Crescent City, CA. It is so much fun to watch them and really is relaxing. We have chipmunks 🐿 also. I can name all sorts of cute animals, birds, and even foxes . Also, river otters . Thanks again
I love the California Quail. Ever since I was a kid I’ve seen them on camping trips near Morro Bay. I was always fascinated by their family structure by seeing the mother lead, and watch over the chicks while the father stands at the back on the lookout for danger.
I remembered Professor Hanson, said "Listen for its call, Chicago" and by George, I heard it! Warmed my heart because my maternal grandpa lived in Chicago! C-h-i-c-a-g-o! Thought it might even have worn a tiny "Cubs" baseball cap🧢🐓.
What a breathtaking scene of that quail amidst that green tree foliage! Love this video. The quail and pheasant family are some of the most beautiful birds in creation!
My father recounted his personal memories of a quail he raised on our family farm in Guadalupe, California. He said "she" flew away one day, but returned every year and seemed to say thank you to him!
oh my god i love quails they're always at the opposite side of my neighborhood. Its just those feathers. those damn feathers on their head. so damn cute.
There is a covey or flock in our area - we live on the edge of a natural preserve and the group of about 15 or so come out to feed. They cross the street on ground and come up the embankment behind our house, and now they have discovered the bird feeder in my back yard. The finches, sparrows, mourning doves all splash seed onto the ground. The quail are so fun to watch, especially when they scurry around the fence line and come into the yard. When they are done, they take the short flight back into the brush in the canyon. They are beautiful.
They are a blast - we have feeding time at about 5 pm apparently...all the Quail, Dove, finches, Oriole, sparrows, squirrels, black birds, humming birds come at about that time.
We put our seed in feeders and on the ground. The closest we can get the quail to come is a back yard at 6am. We enjoy seeing lots of birds. I am trying to get more quail to come closer so we can see them!
I planted separate male female kiwi vines that developed into a huge rookery for the California Mountain Quail on place. It intertwined on some posts, rails, and poles to the size of 8' ft. high, 10' ft. wide, and 16' ft. long trellis. There were about a dozen of the grey breasted with brown and black feathers that lived, roosted, and nested on the entangled long vines. Occasionally a female wood hatched about 12 chicks and would run around eating low flower pods. They even ventured in the horse and mini donkey corrals to pick up the seed from the hay we threw out. Very distinctive calls, chirps, and gobblegrunts came from their beaks and throats. Redtail Hawks would cruise the area to try to catch one. Was a site to see along with the wild bronze breasted turkeys with purple heads, red waddles, and a 6" long tail of a beard. Thanks for the clips of some of them coming iut of their egg shells.
very cool; that little tuft on its head is there for no reason other than ornamentation, and identification. There a lot of quail in Arizona, but not many in the cities here.
That plume on top of the male there's actually three when they feel threatened or danger they will on ruffle all three of those I had a wild quail for 8 years I thought there was only one plume but there's actually three I learned a lot about having quail after Mr Quail was brought to me you had a vet check up for a hurt wing and it was mended correctly so he wasn't able to fly so I had him for quite a few years
Used to live in the Okanagan, British Columbia. These dudes were a highlight. My parents called their little calls "Chicagos" for some reason, don't remember why. Love them
Add them to the list of habitats in Southern Arizona. I feed the local birds every day at a specific time and all kinds of birds arrive and line up on the telephone wire (lazy boogers). The funniest and the ones with the most personality are the quail. Watching them interact, chase each other, try to woo a potential sweetie pie to mate with, is mesmerizing and what a show they put on! I literally sit quietly at a short distance where they can't see me. They're thugs and goofiness is always going on. Its the only part of the year where I can sit outdoors in the shade for any length of time. The rest of the year is either cold or the temperature of a glass blowing furnace. But it's worth it to watch them court the ladies and run around kicking each others' butts to get to the seed. LOL
We have lots of Quail where I live in the Northern California Sierra Nevada foothils. When I lived over on the central coast of California, we had lots and lots of them there as well. They are one of my favorite birds.
I had a bunch that were freezing a winter ago and moved into my garage. Needless to say they were desperate and I semi tamed a group and they stick around here now. This breed of quail is fun to watch, they are very family oriented and take really good care of their young.
I live in the foothills of California and there are a ton of quail in my area. I have at least 3 families just on the 1.5 acres I'm on. I LOVE watching them. A family (the mom and dad always take the babies out together) just walked by moments ago with some VERY young babies, feeding in my shrubs. They are so cute. Sometimes they'll get separated and they start making calls at each other - then the babies will run to their parents.
Hello Peter! I have california vally quail. They hatched in my incubator. They grew up very fast and now they are laying. I'm very happy with my birds. I was laughing now because while I'm watching your video they are listening the birds here and mine stared singing too. Ha ha :) I love birds. thank you so much for uploading. God bless you :)
I've lived in California my whole life and have only seen them twice! Saw them running and flying across a road a few days ago in rural Benton, CA. I just love their little "Chicago!" call.
When I was small (maybe about 10) I asked my mother what was the most beautiful bird she could think of. And her answer was " a partridge". When I see these beautiful quail in this video, I think of her and I see exactly why she gave me that answer!
They have been introduced into New Zealand also. I live in a rural farm setting and see them wandering into my yard along with Pheasants, Magpies, Kingfishers and our native Pukeko and Tui. Quite a bird song in the mornings!
Yes, it is fantastic not to be directed to those damn hunting videos!!! It's wonderful to see these beautiful birds running around with their babies freely and without fear of being killed!
"They readily visit residential backyards and gardens." Oh yeah, they do. I once saw a family of quails in my backyard! There were about four large babies and the parents were right by them.
that sound in the beggining is what I heard and it was like laughing and it was really loud...they are fast runners...i live in Idaho, and I see them every year...they look the same here.
I've been searching for this bird sound for years and everytime I watch the grand Chaparral I didn't know it was a Quail sound I thought it was Apache sound
