The second part of the series of Gustavus Adolfus, this time addressing the Swedish entry into the Thirty Years War and the first great victory at Breitenfeld.
Once again, pictures are taken by and large from Wikipedia, and the primary focus of research was Bevin Alexander's 'How Wars Are Won'

You curtain he went in to winter quarter after the battle? He was known as the winter king since he didn't go on winter quarter. Also you say he accomplished nothing from the campaign. Didn't he do the battle at Breitenfeldt to save Saxony? He saved Saxony with that victory and increased the likelihood of more smaller german states joining the Swedes. Don't remember if more joined.

To be honest, the count of tilly wasn't a bad battlefield general and the completion of that maneuver, where he shifted his battle line to envelop the Swedish flank was pretty complex, especially when using tercios, if Gustavus had been facing someone who just committed to a frontal assault (as most German generals probably would have) the battle would have been an even greater slaughter and most likely a quick general rout from the imperial forces. However, this isn't to say that Gustavus was not the general history builds him up to be, and he was excellent at quickly adapting, as when he saw the Saxon flank falter he micromanaged his formations and brought them to bear on the advancing German line quickly. If Pappenheim hadn't been impetuous, it would have been interesting to see what the count of tilly would have used them in the battle, but even in a more ideal situation, where his left wing wasn't annihilated, it would have been a fairly resounding victory for the Swedes. But again, it should be absolutely noted that the count of tilly actually wasn't a dumbass, and if the Swedes had been using tercios, this battle would have been a victory for the Imperials.

Tilly was inexperienced????????

Björn Ladholm Yeah, that's a bit of a mistake. He was a veteran of over a dozen battles and over 55 years of service. That's about as far from inexperienced as you can get... Still a good video though.

Not fair to Tilly. He was far from inexperienced, and had driven all before him previously. If he lost to a new form of warfare, who can blame him? Why change what's always worked in the past? In any case, Gustavus didn't last. He got himself killed uselessly at Lutzen, and at Nordlingen his army was devoured by the Cardinal Infante and Ferdinand of Hungary. The only thing that saved the Swedes thereafter was Richelieu's money, without which, Oxenstierna's troops would have been pushed into the Baltic.

The metapolitical analysis is not good. People back then knew what they were doing. Just as Hannibal knew what he was doing. And what he was not doing.

Not sure if this would be of interest. The Swedish power metal group Sabaton did a song about the Battle of Breitenfeld called "Gott Mit Uns" ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1dUxCefd9Is.html

Tilly. Inexperienced? I think not.

There was approximately equal amount of Finnish and Swedish troops in Gustaf Adolf's army. The Finnish commander Horn won this battle among many others with his cavalry and Finnish Hakkapeliittas. This entire war would have not been possible without the Finnish troops. The devil is in the details...

Only the cavalry was mostly Finnish. What Finnish regiments was in his army? He kept 40k soldiers in Sweden most of them in Finland to scare of Russia and Poland from starting a new war. Since all regiments where all from different provinces in Sweden it's easy to see if they where from Finland or Sweden. I know they had at least 500 Finnish infantry that where a kind of elite among the infantry together with Scottish men that he used for special tasks when attacking fortresses or smaller engagement.

Finnish cavalary was indeed a contribute to the Swedish army of this time. But at the same time Finland was Sweden during this time. However, Sweden and Finland still have strong connections and a relation of brotherly love.

"Brotherly love." Why the fuck should I feel love for a nation that constantly erases out of history and makes our achievements their achievements? A country that first conquered us with the flimsy excuse of "spreading christianity" and then proceeded to erase all pre-swedish history.

@@finnicpatriot6399 What are Sweden erasing? And what achievements are Sweden claiming as theirs? Write these things and then prepare to get your mongol face smashed with facts.

Bödvar Bödvar 1. The demolishing of Kuusisto Castle lead to the loss of most primary sources on pre-swedish history of finland and the lineages of finnish noble families and chieftains. 2. Numerous figures like Juho Maununpoika, Antti Niilonpoika, Evert Horn, Klaus Fleming, Akseli Kurki, Iivar Särkilahti etc are called ”swedish” by swedish historians based only on their nationality, rather than their ethnic finnish background. They also tend to ignore the fact that they all spoke Finnish as their mother tongue. 3. The swedish-controlled Finnish Heritage Agency (almost every single chairman has been swedish) has closed off numerous archeological sites from investigation and kept them so. Even sites that are nearly collapsing, like Kuninkaanhauta, still have no plans to have them excavated. Pappilanmäki, the most notable iron age cemetery in Finland where the ancient upper class of Finland has been found has still not been fully excavated. The main grave in that area, ”king’s grave” which is situated next to the graves of his bodyguards, has not been excavated for 80 years: ever since the agency was taken over by ethnic swedes. 4. Charles IX purged the Finnish nobility and replaced it with ethnic swedes and baltic germans. A new culture of swedish assimilation was put into function, which saw the Finnish nobility become unilingually Swedish over the 17th and 18th centuries. 5. Johan Ihre begins a tradition of historical denial. Before him, Swedish history generally accepted the fact that Finland had consisted of tribal kingdoms with their own rulers and societal organization. He denies the sagas as sources for finnish kings, yet he completely accepts the historicity of SWEDISH kings present in the sagas. Historians after him would follow suit. 6. Swedish historians claimed for a long time (and some still do) that the Kvens were a scandinavian people, rather than a Finnic one. 7. Swedish historians and officials still support the myths of the first and second crusades into finland, for which no material evidence or sources have been provided. Funny of you to call me a mongol, considering that we have more genes from the original aryans than swedes do.
