The Canaanite woman a dog? explained by Origen

Origen the third century Christian apologist explains there was nothing wrong in Jesus calling the Canaanite woman a dog. Put simply the Jews commonly called gentiles dogs so this was nothing out of the ordinary. The story appears in both the Gospel of Mark chapter 7 and Gospel of Luke Chapter 15. Origen puts forward several explanations including one that Jesus had been given limited power and hence was reluctant to help gentiles in order to preserve his power to help Jews.

The question is why "Mark" who blames jews for killing Jezus and probably was a gentile himself would tell the story this way. The answer must be aknowledging that Mark did not think that Jezus was divine ar all. And was just as imperfect as Mozes and KIng David.

Mark being the earliest gospel certainly shows Jesus as far more human than the later gospels with John easily going off at considerable tangent and elevating him to divine status.

I've read priests saying that sincere newly converts are often much more radical and self-righteous in their beliefs than those into born into religion, over-compensating for their own former "faulty" belief system, and reveling in their new sense of moral ascention over those still stuck in the old religion. Specifically about being scholars in a priest school unnerved by a guy that wanted to be a priest and bragged about whiping himself in "piety" about having "carnal thoughts", despite clearly not understanding the spiritual practice they thought that whiping was supposed to be, to those who practise it. He's now a far right politician in my country.

An interpolation to establish Jewish supremacy over enemy Canaanites? As Origen says - `She acknowledges that the MASTERS are of a nobler race'. The story does not fit with Jesus teachings - Love one another. The Good Samaritan. The Woman at the Well. Jesus preached extensively in Canaan, including the Decapolis - 10 Hellenized cities.
@FlaviusClaudiusJulianus361
@FlaviusClaudiusJulianus361 2 года назад
Love one another is a very generic and axiomatic phrase that we would all agree with. However Jesus really preached only to his Jewish people ('I was sent only to help God's lost sheep - the people of Israel). and travelled very little outside Judea. Certainly travelled far less than Paul and the other apostles who actively targeted gentiles. Why a divine being would only preach to Jews is perhaps a good subject for a future video.

He was testing the gentile women faith infront of his Jewish disciple The story ends with jesus praising the woman “Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted.” (Mt 15:28 and the same about the roman centurion “Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith.” (Mt 8:10) That is more than his disciples got in the same chapter “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” (Mt 8:26). Funny thing, Jews would critique the NT makes the non-jews more sympathetic and humble. Do you also get triggered by Jesus calling Peter of Satan (Mt16) or the pharisees of vipers (Mt 23)? @@FlaviusClaudiusJulianus361 The ethnic exclusivism is a problem for the whole Old Testament, too. According to the narrative of the Old Testament, God reveled himself to Adam and his descendants (through Seth's bloodline only), and after Noah died, God revealed himself to only Abraham and his descendants. Supposedly they were meant to preach to everyone else, but they didn't (which God would have known ahead of time). All of it seems a very inefficient and ineffective plan for God to come up with.

On much more future videos, would you do an analysis on the apostle Paul btw? As I read more of the new Testament, I get more inclined to the view that Paul subverted the original message of the gospels and after reading passages about restricting the role of women in church, possible homophobia (there is debate over the translation from the original Greek word whether it meant pederasty was a sin or the nature of homosexuality itself), and verses that clearly state that slaves should obey their masters, I think...Paul or at least the scribes who wrote the text are very horrific in my view

Hi Josh, thx for the comment and view. Yes sure that would be interesting to do. Unfortunately Jesus neglected to write anything so the New Testament is over dependent on Paul's thinking and views. In fact the general consensus amongst scholars is that Paul could almost be considered the real founder of Christianity since he actively sought non-jews as converts and made the momentous decision to reject the Mosaic laws (which Jesus never did). Appreciate the interest :)

@@FlaviusClaudiusJulianus361 yea thats understandable and i feel like regardless of what Paul the historical figure actually thought in his writings, the interpretations of his work has throughout millenia justified slavery and anti-semitism among others (ironic that Paul, Jesus and the rest of the apostles were Jews) + I found it odd that while Jesus advocates for making heaven on earth a reality, Paul overtly focuses on salvation after death, submission to the state (which irks my democratic confederalist/neozapatist anarchist leanings) and the lack of advocating political change while we are living our lives. Also, would u discuss about other greco-roman critics of Christianity in future videos in addition to celsus btw? I would be more than interested to hear their perspectives if there any surviving work to this day. Also another thing I'm curious about is the divinity of Jesus because ive heard that there are different endings to the gospel of mark or matthew in regarding the ressurection and I heard of an early Jewish Christian sect called the Ebionites who've held an adoptionist view of Jesus as a mortal man chosen by god because his righteousness thus criticizing the view that Jesus was god or any trinitarian view. CONTEXT to my BACKGROUND: I have only just went back to church (2 churches actually- salvation army and pentecostal) this year. I was originally raised catholic but i had problems with catholicism itself (corruption, sex abuse cases, church hypocrisy) and went to become Agnostic/Atheist for a while. This ceased when the mental crisis i experienced last year motivated me to find god or any supernatural being but there aren't that many religions to explore in the place I'm living which is in North QLD of Australia which is more rural + COVID ceased international travel. In formulating the questions above I might sound like a heretic to other Christians but my skeptical conscious tells me not to believing anything without scrutinising everything so who knows if I will stay a Christian for long because I would personally need to investigate EVERY SINGLE CLAIM made by the bible, preachers and everything. I might want to learn Koine Greek or Hebrew coz I would want to read how the bible originally was written and therefore know if anyone has contradicted their own teachings or misread it. Reading a translation from a translation from a translation doesn't satisfy me at all. P.S Sorry if this has become an essay btw, I just wanted to convey my thoughts and those thoughts aren't simple at all, Josh.

@@joshdanao2089 I'm working on more material from Celsus but also Porphyry and Julian the Apostate and really looking forward to making a series of videos on them! Only some of Julian's work and letters survive to the present day unfortunately. All other pagan polemics against Christianity were destroyed. There were a huge number of Christian sects in early times each having a different view on the nature of Jesus - from entirely human to entirely God and the million variations in between. A lot of 'horse trading' in smoke filled rooms led to some sort of compromise and to the decisions made at the council of Nicaea. The gospels have been tampered with and the ending in Mark as you mention is known to have been a later addition for example. I would recommend Prof. Bart Ehrman's various books on this issue. Would love to learn Koine Greek myself. Absolutely wise decision to scrutinise every single claim - there are a huge number of contradictions in the gospels. And of course if Jesus had written his own 'holy book' explaining his philosophy we wouldn't need the gospels or Paul's work at all!!

He was wicked? There is a man of authority who had a sick child. He begged Jesus to go heal his child. Jesus did not go. Was He wicked? How about the woman with blood? Was Jesus wicked? Ultimately, i think Jesus didnt want to compare gentiles to dogs as he didnt compare jews with children, more related to his duty at the time, and this makes sense, but its still a harsh comparison given that It sounds so much like a racial slur, and that he apparently was so harsh to a desperated woman. @Pedro Cavalcanti we also have the immoral acts of the Christian god like in Joshua 11:19-20 God harden more people hearts to wage war on Israel so that he can destroy them. how about the story of david????? 2 Samuel 11&12 david became king, got a soldier's wife pregnant, had him sent to the front fighting line and left to be killed. For the taking of the man's wife and having him killed God's punishment was to kill the baby while his buddy david walk away free. How is this a good moral story??? Lots daughters raped him after god set fire to their city. How and where they got enough wine to get him drunk for 2 days is another mystery because they fled the city with what they could carry. That was after he offered his daughters to ALL THE MEN IN THE CITY both young and old to be gang raped.

Jesus never existed! NT Gospels: All written in Greek by unknown authors. Mark was written some time after the year 70, Luke about 110, Matthew about 130, and John not earlier than 140 CE. This proves that they were not written by Christ's disciples, or by any of the early Christians Jesus is depicted as hugely popular in the gospels. Yet he is unrecorded by non-Biblical historians. Paul was the first one to write about Jesus around 60CE; but he, like everyone else, never saw Jesus. He experienced a vision of the resurrected Jesus. Even Paul’s existence is in serious doubt. John Gresham Machen wrote: The establishment of Christianity as a world religion, to almost as great an extent as any great historical movement can be ascribed to one man, was the work of Paul. I also read that the history of the first three popes was invented because they never existed. Modern archeologists agree that the only thing in Nazareth in the first century was a well for camel caravans. The birth of Jesus in Bethlehem was invented because Jews believed that their savior would be born there. Joseph had to go to Bethlehem for a Roman census. I read that only the man of the family had to attend and these censuses actually started a few years later. Do you actually believe that Mary traveled on the back of a donkey for 60 miles (95 kms), while over 8 months pregnant? The world has been for a long time engaged in writing lives of Jesus... The library of such books has grown since then. But when we come to examine them, one startling fact confronts us: all of these books relate to a personage concerning whom there does not exist a single scrap of contemporary information -- not one! The Christian god is the same as Allah: From the Quran: confirming what was before it, and [before He sent down the Quran] He sent down the Torah of Moses and the Gospel of Jesus… as a guidance for the people. Both (same) flooded the earth and saved Noah and his family. You have all been fooled by religion! So sad!

Yes the startling thing is that of all his disciples and all his believers (if one is to believe the gospels are true) none had the motivation or drive to write his own account of a man they thought was God incarnate and who was going to save humanity. Seems like just a parable to me. Jesus did not actually say "you're a dog". If he was calling her a dog, he would also have been calling the Jews children. He was trying to make the point that his preaching was directed at the Jewish religion. He is similarly surprised when a Roman centurian asks him to heal his servant. Josephus makes the point that many pagans worshiped at the Jewish temple, so if a Jewish miracle worker was wandering round, and you had a problem, you might try your luck, if you were superstitious, which you would have been. This puts Jesus in an embarrassing position. He is using miracles to highlight his teaching. If he just helps anyone, it loses its message potency. But if he refuses to help needy pagans, he looks heartless. So he has to help, but makes a point when doing so.

Curious story, but in honesty I don't think it is truly difficult to grasp, compared to other matters at least. It is a concise story with a simple lesson: hierarchies exist, must be recognized, but should not be the end-all and be-all when it comes to judging others appropriately, since worthy people can be found anywhere. Of note is that the Jews are referred to as "children", which is indeed better than "dogs", but still implies being at a lower disposition than God Himself. On the matter of Jesus "changing his mind", I would simply state no such thing is the case, given God's omniscience, and being all aware, I would say the lesson at hand was more so directed towards those who were with him, the "masters", rather than to woman herself; one could even say the woman herself by her actions taught Jesus' disciples this lesson! It is possible to learn from all, regardless of position. I think that a number of arguments around this might be weakened due to, ironically, people's unwillingness to accept their position within these hierarchies. I saw you mentioning a certain cognitive dissonance Christians have, I think a lot of it comes from the once pagans, the Aryans, desiring to insist on their position as the "master race" no matter what (since most discussion around this is done by "white" people in general). In relation to all of this, I was reminded of a Buddhist story found in the Vimalakīrti Sūtra, in which a "mere" layman, known as Vimalakīrti, shows a more profound understanding than that of the bodhisattvas on the matter of nonduality, by simply expressing silence.

Thx for watching! Hierarchies exist certainly but those based on race should not exist however, and certainly not on religious matters. And certainly a divine being (if we assume Jesus was divine) should not be treating humans differently based on race. Arguably he should have treated non-Jews much better than Jews. Regarding Jesus changing his mind it has to be borne in mind he entirely ignored her initially which is strange behaviour regardless of whether he was omniscient. In fact it's remarkable that he never in his entire ministry criticised any of the Jewish cultural and religious bias against gentiles.

@@FlaviusClaudiusJulianus361 I don't see how hierarchies based on race "shouldn't exist", I don't see it as particularly outrageous, and as religious matters go, the Hindu caste system was pretty much that (both racial and religious in character) considering the highest rank was that of the priests so religion wasn't "fully open" to everyone, far less so to those in the two second lowest groups. With omniscience taken into account I don't think saying she "initially ignored her" would apply as much since all could be seen as intentional regarding a better deliver of the message I had mentioned, although it would appear strange on the outside at least. In any case absence of criticism (clear criticism at least, since things such as "love thy neighbor" could be taken as such) regarding biases could either be attributed to it not being registered (since not everything he did was) or indeed something that is oddly absent.

Thx for your comment Jason. My point was that if someone can walk on water, resurrect himself from the dead etc then he has no need to hide. Even if they had killed him he could have effortlessly come back to life (unless you argue Jesus could only die once and that itself has problems) . The story is a strange one in that Jesus did not want to talk to a non-Jew woman and so has to be considered rather than interpreted in as benign a way as possible

@ Jason Teddy A powerful divine creator doesn’t need you to defend him (if so he is weak) or use the crazy mental gymnastics (clearly ignoring the facts presented) that you tried unsuccessfully to disprove that statements raised in this video.

@@elliottprats1910 I am not " defending HIM" I am asking HIM to prove HIMSELF and what HE has said to me that will be, over and over again. Untill you all hear HIM and obey, so I will pray it again, for HIM to speak to you and as we both know, I am not speaking defense, I'm asking HIM to go on the offense and prove HIMSELF to all of you as HE has Me. Other than that, I ask HIM to Keep HIS Promises as well. And also to bring the wrath promised upon all those who deny HIM and have destroyed HIS miracles and those against the Messiah. And to make it very plain why you all should fear HIM for all of your wrongs and thefts and lies and abuses and frauds and false teachings. Cause most certainly HE needs no defense. Although HE must keep HIS promises if HE truely is ADONAI THE MIGHTY AND ONE TRUE GOD THE FATHER CREATOR OF ALL AND NOT CRESTED HIMSELF, BUT EVERLASTING AND EYERNAL GOD of ALL AFTER HIM, FATHER OF CHRIST Son Of GOD ADONAI. GOD before all spirit and all things formed and made, GOD before Time and things that perceived HIM as HE IS GOD, Mighty and Eternal. And I ask and petition to HIM this day, to speak to you as HE did me, to define HIMSELF by HIS own annunciation and also that annunciation of who I am to HIM, by HIS forming and who I have been in my lifetimes, and what Judgement HE has laid upon Me personally and that Judgement HE has Laid upon all other males existing on the planet today that are not me or Of HIM.

@@jasonteddy5302 well you just described a bunch of nonsense of your God not believing in him and what about false teaching man was clear the stories doesn't make sense and is weird for a God that is loving isn't that all seem like a egotistic God to me.
