The Canadian Residential School Documentary

This is the Canadian residential school documentary. Canadian residential schools started in the late 1800s which were a government-sponsored religious school that was established in order to forcefully assimilate Indigenous children into Euro-Canadian culture. The Canadian government's Department of Indian Affairs (DIA) officially encouraged the growth of the residential school system as a valuable component in a wider policy of integrating Indigenous people into Euro-Canadian society. Residential schools were created by Christian churches and the Canadian government as an attempt to both educate and convert Indigenous youth and to assimilate them into Canadian society.
However, the schools have disrupted lives and communities, causing lifelong problems. There are hundreds of scary stories from students who were admitted to the school and how terrible their experiences were. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRC) considered it to be a cultural genocide, a conclusion that echoed the words of historian John Milloy, who argued that the system's aim was to "kill the Indian in the child."

I was not alive when these schools were running, but I feel so awful for this. My country, which is supposedly loving and accepting, has done unspeakable things to innocent children and families for over a century. To all the sufferers of this cultural genocide, I am so, so sorry.

To be fair at least you Canadians have apologised, I live in the UK (Scotland) and I'm yet to hear a speech from a prime minister apologising about our colonialisation of the globe. I'm of mixed race because of colonialisation, my great great grandfather was a Swiss colonial and met my GGG who was a tribal woman. They moved all over east Africa for the next few generations until I was born in the uk to a Tanzanian mother and Irish father 😂 I still think colonialism was/is a terrible crime but I recognise that I wouldn't be here without it. We can't change the past but Canada are doing more than most so be proud of that at least. 💙🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🌍🇨🇦❤

You have a lot to learn about the world and human nature and the unspeakable things that people ... not white people or Christian people, just plain ole people, including so-called indigenous people ... did to each other in the past. And why they are so far removed from your experience today, and by whom.

just to be clear, for everyone reading comments and whatnot, the deaths were documented deaths. there's possibly thousands more undocumented deaths, we recently found 215 children's bodies buried in kamloops british columbia at a residential school. we're trying to call for the government to check each and every one of those residential schools to let those children find home. just think about it - that was only ONE residential school, there's 140 residential schools! those poor souls. - an ojibway/cree first nations woman living in saskatchewan, canada.

My moms grandmother is a residential school survivor. My mom would ask her about residential school, and she wouldn’t like to talk about it. She witnessed peers being beaten, raped, and sometimes even killed. She wouldn’t want to speak about it. Her Native language, Blackfoot, was completely gone from her memory. She had no idea why any of this happened at the time. But it’s still affected my family to this day. I almost want to burn down every catholic church that I see. It sounds psychotic, but the pain is still real. My chest feels heavy, because of there are 215 children that were found in one residential school, how many other lost souls are there at other residential schools that have not been set free from the evil demons of the catholic church? I’m still surprised that people haven’t heard about it, it’s talked about a lot (though not in school 😟) Just saw a video of a survivor who said she witnessed the nuns murder a newborn baby. Sometimes the girls would get pregnant from being raped and of course this would be a huge scandal, so the babies would “disappear” This survivor said she was downstairs helping prep meals in the kitchen and a baby girl that had just been born, the nuns put on this air, swaddling her in pink and taking her from the mother. They brought the baby downstairs to the furnace room and threw it into the furnace. She said she heard a quick cry and then nothing and you could smell the burning flesh. It’s absolutely monstrous what they did to these students, and so many survivors are still struggling from the trauma. The church needs to pay restitution.

OK Canada, the world is watching. Bad as the consequences have been, are, upon native people in Canada. I am absolutely astounded at the strength and resilience of so many native Canadians. In the same manner that Jewish people don't let people forget the horrors of the holocaust, brought it to broad attention. Native Canadians must tell their story, over, and over, and over. Especially since their stories are not only stories of survival, but stories of how different tribes can in fact co-exist. (A lesson so many people would benefit from: Israel, China, Russia, etc.)

Calgary Sun article: This Calgary Sun article tells some staggering truths and historical facts. I hope you are open-minded enough to make an objective read. I will add one interesting fact - since 1946 the Canadian Government has spent $3,300,000,000,000.00 - that is 3.3 TRILLION on Indian Affairs with NO RETURN on the investment. This should be reading material for ALL Canadians. This article is correct. Some very interesting statistics for each individual to consider but anyone with a background knows this to be true already! The fact is that the bleeding hearts and vote mongering Politicians don't want the general public to know this, so let's spread it around! Judging from an article in The Calgary Sun entitled "Enough is Enough", a National Inquiry into missing and murdered aboriginal women is NOT what needs to be done and Harper was right in not pursuing this time wasting expensive suggestion supported by both the NDP and Liberals. Chief Ronald Morin of the Enoch band west of Edmonton is paid $750,000.00 per year by the federal government (YOU). He spends winters at his winter home in Las Vegas, 4 car garage & swimming pool. Not all the people in his band live like kings. Still every Chief of an Indian Band in Canada makes more than our Prime Minister. Harper brought in the "Accountability Act" so that these Chiefs would have to tell their band members and the rest of us where the money was being spent. It is the taxpayers' money and we have the right to know where all this money is going. One of Trudeau's first acts as Prime Minister was to throw out the "Accountability Act”. If you were paying attention at all and did your research you would understand this tragedy, the real issues and what needs to be done to address them. Some statistics: • According to the RCMP: Out of 6,420 missing persons in Canada 1,455 are women, of those 164 are aboriginal. • 88% of murders of aboriginal women have been solved by police • 89% of murders of non-aboriginal women have been solved by police • Between 1980 and 2012 there were 20,313 murders in Canada. • 6,551 of those victims were women and 1,017 of those were aboriginal women. Here's where it gets even more interesting: • Almost 30% of the 1,017 aboriginal women were murdered by their husbands. • 23% were murdered by another family member. • 30% were murdered by an acquaintance. • So, only about 8% of aboriginal women were murdered by strangers. More statistics: • 44% of the family members and acquaintances who kill aboriginal women were drunk. • 74% of the murderers of aboriginal women are unemployed. AND NOW THE MOST SHOCKING: • 71% of the murderers of aboriginal women already had a criminal record. • 53% had been convicted before of a violent crime. • 62% had a history of violence with the specific murder victim herself. To be clear, there are some Chiefs and aboriginal communities in this country that are doing well, for various reasons, but much of it has to do with their leadership. Chief Clarence Louie of the Osoyoos Indian Band is an excellent example of quality leadership, but no one (especially the media & government) ever talk about him and his people. Here are the REAL issues: 1. Welfare. The billions of tax payer dollars that go to support aboriginal people, not only in living expenses but free education, free medical, no taxation, etc. has crippled them (as it has crippled many non-aboriginal Canadians for generations). I would venture to say many of them have not worked a day in their lives. 2. Corrupt leadership who have no idea how to lead, manage, inspire or teach their people .... who take for themselves and their families and friends and are not accountable to anyone (as evidenced most strongly by Chief Theresa Spence in Attawapiskat.) and blame, blame, blame the Canadian Government. 3. Alcohol and drug abuse, gang violence .... all contributing factors in the crime rate on reserves, lack of parenting, family violence and poverty. 4. A two-tiered justice system that gives aboriginal offenders lighter sentences, or no sentences at all, allowing them back into their communities to continue to abuse the same aboriginal women again and again .... often resulting in death (as evidenced by the 83% who were murdered by their husbands, a family member or an acquaintance). If you want a National Inquiry .... it should be on this issue. When you say "It is inconceivable that we, as a country, allowed this situation to continue" .... and "We urgently need to acknowledge the systemic aspect of this crisis instead of ignoring or dismissing it. " What are your intended solutions?" A National Inquiry is not going to fix these problems! Giving the aboriginals more of hard-earned Canadian taxpayer dollars is NOT going to fix this problem! WHAT ARE REAL SOLUTIONS TO THE REAL ISSUES? Let's get this straight. This land does not belong to them and they never were a 'Nation'. These people's ancestors did not just appear in North America, magically out of thin air one day 40 or 50,000 years ago. They came in waves across the land/ice bridge from Asia. What's more, these waves, in many cases, were not related groups of people. They came from various places around North Eastern Asia and were from different genetic strains. In other words, the "natives of North America" are not a homogenous group of people and more importantly... they are immigrants too. Like millions of immigrants today. The idea that the "natives" were peaceful caretakers of the land or benevolent tenants couldn't be further from the truth. The various tribes right across Canada warred on each other constantly. They were violent. Want proof? Ask the Hurons ... oh, that's right you can't. The Iroquois' wiped them out. How about slavery that was rife among all the first nation tribes until the Europeans came and freed the slaves and put an end to this "valued cultural tradition". Is slavery peaceful and humane? The idea that we "stole" this land from them is also ridiculous. A more technologically advanced and numerous culture invaded and conquered. This is exactly what has been happening since the dawn of humanity all around the globe. To say we "stole" their lands is just plain wrong. That is akin to saying the Saxons should return England to the Angles. Or maybe we should launch a campaign to have the Roman descendants give Italy back to the Etruscans. It is a nonsensical notion driven by the politically correct bleeding hearts, some intellectually deficient politicians and pressure on the Government from lobbying groups. Also by the Indian people. It will continue to cost this country needless and wasted trillions until we get some backbone and turn off the taps. Are these people in trouble? Yes. Do they need help? Yes. Are they responsible enough to look after themselves and efficiently spend the billions that tax payers give them? CERTAINLY NOT! The only way to fix this situation is to bring them into society as equals. Getting jobs and paying taxes like the rest of us because in reality, they are no more special than any of the other numerous cultures that now call Canada home.

I want to thank you for making and uploading this video. .....BUT, for the opposite reason I suppose you'd like me to praise your work. Even though you are a critic of these indigenous boarding schools, you provided no evidence of genocide or monstrous abuse of the children forced to attend them. (And, virtually ALL children are subject to COMPULSORY education by somebody -- usually their parents, and often the legal authorities.) The "cultural genocide" inflicted upon these indigenous children is no different that the "cultural genocide" inflicted on any Italian, Polish, Jewish, German -- any non-Anglo-Saxon European immigrant kid who went to any state-supported school in Canada (or the U.S.). .....ALL were subjected to assimilation programs (it was known as "Americanization", here, in the U.S.). The major difference, of course, was that the Italian kid (or Jewish kid or Chinese kid or German kid) could go home to his family, after school, and receive the "old country [or old religion]" education there. While at the American public school, the Italian-American or east European Jewish American kid was taught essentially WASP (White Anglosaxon Protestant) values. I'm quite sure that Euro-Canadian kids were subject to compulsory school attendance laws as their counterparts in the USA. Were THEY not punished for using Italian or Yiddish in school rather than English? Were THEY not subject to corporal punishment? Should Italian-Americans or Polish-Canadians clamor for civil damage awards form the government also? ....Add on to the above fact, the FURTHER fact that "Indians" who were stilling living in their tribal ways and not conforming to the laws of Canada (and thus occasionally attacking pioneers, stealing horses and livestock, etc.) were regarded as a kind of internal enemy populace; and thus were subject to the kind of policies inflicted upon "enemy aliens" -- internment camps (which, in this case, were the "reserves" or "reservations" as they are called in the U.S.) and the forced separation of "enemy alien children" for special education which would ensure that they are brought up in the values of the victors in this struggle. However, was the treatment of these children any significantly different than the treatment of children in orphanages and other such institutions, such as those boarding schools for children from destitute households or households of internal enemies of law and order? (The unmarked graves? Not "mass graves" as reported earlier. Are there not neglected cemeteries and forgotten graves in many other parts of Canada and the USA? Was there a higher rate of childhood disease and death at THESE boarding schools than at orphanages, and other boarding institutions for kids from destitute Euro-Canadian families? ....Was there, really? Has any media outlet checked the figures?) "Cultural genocide" is a meaningless concept. Indeed, that rhetorical term could be an attack on any and all progress by education -- such as to replace superstition with a respect for logic and science, or the assimilation of a relatively isolated and backward ethnicity with a larger demographic which has a more advanced culture. (German kids living in Alsace, France were PUNISHED if they used German in school after World War II. "Cultural genocide?") The shouts of "cultural genocide" is an attack on the process of civilizational advancement. Its underlying premise is "all cultures are of equal value!" (which is the essence of the so-called multiculturalism ideology). It's only convincing with people who forget that CULTURE is a state of mind -- NOT a racial identity. (Culture is the sum of ideas and customs and practices. It is NOT tied to one's genes.) Not all ideas (or practices) are of equal value to human flourishing; so, it is not true that all cultures are "equal". The most I can sympathize with the thesis of this video (and others like it) is that these schools could be said to have been incompetently managed. (Oh, and that there was a higher mortality rate for children from poorer families -- which is true across the board regardless of ethnicity. Boarding schools for destitute children tended to suck in those days.) But, what about the very purpose of "Indian schools"? Its purpose was essentially the same as ALL schools -- to beat the savage out of the growing man or woman. What is Hannah Arendt's famous quip? "In every generation our civilization is invaded by barbarians. We call them 'chidren'."

@MrJm323
@MrJm323 2 года назад
@@henrymudgett2646 There are all sorts of kinds of residential schools at the time: from Eton and Harrow for well-to-do kids to charitable residential schools for destitute children (and orphanages). In many cases, in the civilized world, children are forcibly removed from impoverished families and placed in institutions. Prior to a hundred years ago, these institutions provided care that TODAY would be regarded as unacceptable in terms of nutrition, health care, etc.. Do you suppose if we visited some rural former residential schools and "work farms" for the poor, that we won't find untended forgotten cemeteries with many unmarked graves? Do you suppose that they didn't have a similar mortality rate among their student-inmates (mainly due to disease and probably nutrition deficiencies)? One thing I DO know is that there was no "genocide" going on in them. These places were no secrets to the general public, and were considered institutions of compassionate relief. We should also not forget that, prior to 1945, it was common practice to "intern" the civilians of an enemy nation during a time of war. I don't know why people forget that the indigenous populations were often regarded as "hostiles" who did not recognize our territorial claims, submit to our laws, respect our property claims, respect civilized standards when treating our captives in their hands, etc.. Not only were these hostiles forced to move onto reservations (IF they refused to leave their tribes for immediate integration into the conquerors' society), but their children were often forcibly removed from THEIR communities (backward tribes) and placed in special schools for an education which would infuse them with the culture and values of the conqueror. ....This is an old, time-honored strategy to win a multi-generational war against more primitive peoples who were resisting efforts by the invaders trying to make the territory safe for civilized lawful life (as distinct from collectivized tribal life where decisions were based on mythical tradition and sheer might-makes-right). I mean, that's TWO HUGE contexts being dropped by people looking back at these residential schools.

Not - they were often forcibly removed from their family homes. Sometimes they were tricked into letting their kids go, sometimes they were lied to and told the school would help . Unbelievable brutal.

My gram was grabbed from the beach in her home community and taken at the age of 4. When her papa found her at Kuper Island Residential School they wouldn’t allow him to take her. Parents were under threat of imprisonment of fines if they didn’t comply. It was also made law that Indigenous children attend (Indian Act). In addition with multiple generations forced into these schools (over 130 across canada over the course of 150+ years) they were beaten into submission.

@@peteranekwe9402 HE didn't appreciate dictatorship either but if you say democracy is good then there's democracy in many countries and Africa and Asia and elsewhere but they're dying because of starvation and in the dictatorial system of China people are having a good life even better than many European countries just look at UAE, Qatar Bahrain Kuwait, etc. they've dictatorial systems. But here he didn't mean democracy in particular what he is talking about is the whole system the capitalism and the capitalist democratic system and the cultures that it has developed with all its evils that we don't see while we know everything. In another stanza, he said "A certain European* revealed a secret, Although the wise do not reveal the core of the matter. Democracy is a certain form of government in which Men are counted but not weighed." Simply saying that in the democratic system that the west has developed they make & implement the laws made by the majority they don't see if those laws are wrong that doesn't matter if 49% or even 1% people say don't allow a thing it will cause natural disruption but 51% vote it and it becomes a law even if it's a bad thing in the long run.

Anglican Church ran 39 residential schools. Methodist ran 12 schools. Presbyterian ran 9 schools. Baptist 1, United Church 2 but united with Methodist and Presbyterian after 1925 so their number is sometimes 22 schools. Nondenominational ran 15 schools. Catholic church ran 67 which was less than half of all the schools but for some reason they are blamed for running all of them. Protestant clergy were accused of physical, emotional and sexual abuse by school survivors. Non clergy that worked at schools were also accused of all abuses.

I'm always enraged when I see cruelty in the name of civilization or claiming territory. Europeans did a number on the world. From colonization, claiming territories, forcing their cultures in the name of civilization, slavery, apartheid etc. Do you know what's worse, the descendants of these evil doers still occupy lands that was grabbed, own stolen properties even in countries where they are minority. So many countries in Africa have the best fertile ranches owned by descendants of colonial masters. I hate these people, hate them for what their ancestors stood for and that they still stand for it only pretending that they're not. It's infuriating. And people will turn around n say "those people bla bla bla". Forcing your culture on people is not civilization. In one way or another, people would have adopted what they liked and discarded what they didn't. Some people still hate themselves n their culture because some foreigners told them it's bad/uncivilized. People hate their names, their languages, their appearance etc and they'll tell you it's their choice but subconsciously some are influenced by "civilization". It's unfortunate that this cruelty still happens even today, just in different subtle ways and disguised as something else. It's absolutely disgusting.
