So things were slow at work this evening and as I have been reprimanded for wanton playlist construction on company time I instead grabbed the Sunday New York Times just to see which of my favorite musicians has died this time. However a small blurb on the front page caught my eye. More than a blurb really. Pretty substantial article actually. If I understood it correctly there is now a highly contagious fungal lung infection going around which is entirely immune from antibiotics, is lethal virtually every time and is now loose and rampaging like something born to do nothing but rampage. Maybe I misread and there were silver linings but all I got out of it is that we’re all going to die and soon. My own lack of response to this disturbs me a bit but I thought if we all have to go then a global pandemic is better than drowning or burning or being shredded like tissue by 500 mph hurricanes. And I thought of this album and imagined downtown Boston sounding like this at twilight as the plague roars across the earth as though the sun itself had farted on us. Oh wouldn’t that be a time. So anyone reading this take even greater pleasure in this classic dark ambient album. And should you feel something distinctly fungal growing like kudzu in your lungs don’t bother with the hospital. They can’t help any of us and time would be better spent lying in bed dying and listening to The Cancelled Earth if we no longer have the strength to go see for ourselves.
