In the final weeks of diesel drawn operations, 1470 and 1500 head the south bound train from Rockhampton into Roma Street Station on 1 May 1989. Upon arrival the train awaits the north bound departure of a Sunlander service before departing for an Empty Cars working to Mayne Depot.
A cab ride on 1470 on the run down to Mayne yard is the theme of this clip.
This content was captured for the project 21A to X301, the story of passenger rail services between Brisbane and Rockhampton. The material was not used in this production.
The details of the original production can be see at this link.

Thank you for reaching out and sharing your feelings with me. The QR you so fondly remember has been lost in recent decades. I hope you enjoy my other productions.

Olha eu aqui de novo. Boa noite... Hoje 02/01/2023. Nada mudou.

Great stuff here! I vaguely remember the existence of the Capricornian. I wish it still existed today, despite how nice the tilt trains are. To me there was something extra special about riding on an overnight train in sleeping cars! Maybe it was just that I was a kid at the time, but to me it was an awesome experience, and something I still hunt for today with overseas trains.

Thanks for your comment. I like to hear of observations and general feedback. The diesel drawn Capricornian finished in 1989 but the train soldiered on until 1993, drawn by 39 Class electric locomotives when it was decided that the daylight ICE train service would be the only train on the Brisbane - Rockhampton route. Of course the Sunlander continued to operate until 2014. The more upmarket, Queenslander service concluded standalone operations in 2003. Another reason for the cessation of the Capricornian was the emergence of the Spirit of the Outback which could be used to travel between Brisbane and Rockhampton. Your yearning for "sleeping cars" is not ab exclusive thought. Many people I meet have similar feelings. Given the state of rail operations in other parts of the world has seen new sleeper cars are being built and whole new train services have emerged, it is rather sad that Australia in general has not taken a similar path. I hope you might enjoy some of my other productions. Thanks again doe getting in touch.

A mate of mine ex Guard /Driver like myself, rang me to say he had discovered this clip ... he was so excited to tell me I was in this video. I'm the Guard - I am from Maryborough but the Driver I saw was a Brisbane/Mayne Depot man. Mike Condon I'd like to download this clip to show my grandsons? I retired as a Locomotive Driver Trainer working for Aurizon in Maryborough on Nov 18th 2019 after 46 years service. 38 of those years for QR. Cheers Neil Adsett

Hi Neill, For a moment you had me confused thinking you were referring to the north bound production on RU-vid. Of course I realise you mean the production that arrives at Roma Street and you appear twice in the production. The reason the Mayne crew were on board relates to the train needing to go via the Car Wash and on somedays shunting at Roma Street Yard. If I understood this correctly at the time, the Maryborough men were relieved at Roma Street so they did not have to be held up by the above tasks. I would check and confirm the following if my father (also seen talking with the crew) was still with us but sadly he has passed but the Driver was Bob Page, now retired I believe and I am not sure about the fireman D/A but from other correspondence it could be Brian Peacock. A lot of this content was part of an old VHS production released in 1990 featuring the Capricornian. Apart from some Rockhampton men and these Mayne men all of the crews were from Maryborough. This included Kev Slipper and John Jarvis. I met up with John by chance in March of last year. I would like to revisit th1990 production at some point but it was a 90 minute production and it would be an enormous task. These clips are permanently on RU-vid and you can watch them at any time. I have no plans to ever remove any productions from the channel. You can view them on all platforms, phone, tablet, computer and television. I am not sure why you might need to download them. Indeed you can forward the link to anybody and they too can access these clips. I hope that assists you with understanding the background and your capacity to access them. I hope your grand children enjoy seeing these moments of what is now a long lost era of railway operations. Thanks for you interest and I hope you might find some other interesting content on the channel. Regards Mike

G'day Mike, Great video, brought back many memories of Roma Street and Brissy. I am after all a Bananadender and have fond childhood memories of riding behind soot belchers and early weasels. I have ridden the Sunlander and Queenslander numerous times during the 1980s and early 1990s. And, while I didn't climb aboard the two units featured here while toiling down in Tassie, I did toil aboard the other units, the trio of QR class unconverted plus the dozen converted to the DQ class. The 1470 control stand is similar to that in our NSW 49 class, and identical to that in the QR class slugs in Tassie. Steve.

Thanks Steve for the compliment. Spent a lot of time on 2100's as well as the 1460 and 1502 classes over the years. Electrification brought about the demise of the earlier types that ended up in NZ and Tasmania.

Hello Ben, I am not if you mean that you would have liked to ride in the train or whether you meant that you would have liked to see vision of the passenger cars in the production. If it was the later, this production is a reworked version of an old VHS production that I would like to recreate one day. The original production did feature the interior of the train. It was also around 90 minutes in duration. I hope this helps in understanding the background. Thanks for your comment and I hope you might enjoy some of my other productions.

Hello, Perhaps it was not obvious from the comments but the video was meant to show the Rockhampton service from Roma Street to Mayne Yard. There is a companion production that shows scenes from the north bound service. Both of these clips are part of a planned DVD production. I have not decided on the format yet but it will cover the operation of this service.
