Is it strange that I am genuinely thrilled for the captain, a good man I never met, gets to meet robben ford, another kind man I never met. And I get to enjoy the interaction from the comfort of my phone 4000 miles away. What a wacky time we live in...
And what a truly nice man Robben Ford REALLY is!!! Way back in 1988, just after Robben's "Talk to your daughter" album came out, Robben toured around and he came to Amagansett, Long Island, N.Y. to play at the "Stephen Talkhouse", a really cool historic old music lounge were lots of famous acts come to perform. I had been a huge fan of Robben's for years, and at the break during his show I went over to his table to meet him. And he was so very cordial and willing to truly talk with you! Just before I finished asking him important questions about music and guitar techniques I asked him if he would be willing to do a guitar clinic on Long Island, and he immediately said ""sure absolutely,,"" and he looked around on the table and finding a paper napkin, he pulled out a pen and wrote the name and phone number of his manager, and he said ""just call him and tell him I gave you his number, and he'll set it up"". That's the kind of guy Robben Ford is! If I remember correctly,, his managers last name was "FERGUSON", I'm not certain of his first name though?!?! Maybe it was Gary, ?!?!?! Anyway,,,,, what a great memory that was~!~
Sonny Cannon That’s awesome! That’s the difference between people who play just to get paid or get laid and the guys who genuinely love the music and the fans. The guys who try to interact and relate with their fans are just the best. Dimebag Darrel from Pantera and Eric Johnson (both Texans as it happens)were/are great examples of down to Earth legends. Robin Ford is as nice as they come!
Hi @@FloridaManMatty Thanks very much for your nice comment! Yes, I guess it's all about who you are as a person, as to whether or not you'll become a snob, or not!!! The egotistical guys who happen to become famous, would have been jerks regardless!!! LOL!!!
I don't get this "humble guitarist" talk. Can you name 3 not humble guitarists that made it and got to top? Do you care how they behave as long as they play top notch?
in my opinion robben ford is just about the most tasteful guitarist on the planet. He has nailed that whole "what not to play/when not to play" thing perfectly. I've played all my life and my solos have always tended to be pretty fast. robben has shown me it doesn't always need to be so. Watch and learn...
Bless The Captain, he didn't realise Robben's joke about best album he ever made @17:24 The smile on RF's face says it all! Great interview both of you.
Bloody lovely bloke, Robben. I met him briefly after a gig in Bath about 20 years ago. Instead of bumming a pick off him, I gave him one of mine. His face was a picture then broke into a great smile, bless him.
Had the immense privilege to meet and play with Robben in the early 90's in Melbourne Australia. Firstly ..the man is a HUGELY developed musician..to sit at close range and lock into his groove and melodic sense while trying to hold up my end forged me as a player forever... Secondly ..a more humble and non bullshit guy would be hard to find.. so generous and sweeeet! Thank You Mr.Ford. PS...the hints he gave me regards comping I still work on nearly 30 yrs later and I'm still scratching the surface...BIG MUSIC
What a nice, thoughtful guy. Very understated and modest (and a terrific musician - goes without saying). You're a natural interviewer, Lee. You ask intelligent questions and allow your subject to speak, adding brief encouragement to keep the flow going occasionally. This is excellent.
RF is a phenomenal guitar player...love his jazz-blues style....although he can play anything.....and a genuinely modest and nice man....a genius who has been around for over 40 years

Saw Robben in Salt Lake City a couple of years ago. We were at cross walk, stopped in a car in front of the venue. A guy with a pony tail and a guitar case crossed the walk right in front of us. I looked at my friend and said, "that looks like Robben Ford", in a sarcastic voice he says, "I believe that is Robben" and indeed it was! It was funny to just see him crossing he street in front of our car. Needless to say, it was a great show! But funny to see him in that situation before the show.
Oh man-I hear you on that! His playing on "Woodstock", "Rainy Night House"-the swells!! and the call and response with Joni on "You Turn me on I'm a Radio".Sheer tasteful magic...
Lovely chat and always a treat hearing Robben play. I love his attitude and his philosophy of a good guitar and a good amp. Pedals and distortion can overshadow the talent of many players. Great video!
I got to see Robben Ford this past weekend in Cincinnati Ohio. His band is incredible. If any of you have not seen him live, you have to.. Incredible playing, and incredible tone!
I saw RF countless times in the past 25 years. Unbelievable musician, at many levels, of course. To me, his taste and musicality are unsurpassed, he just has something that really speaks to me, and i can't find it in anybody else. He has an interesting character though. He can be unbelievably gracious (but avoid taking photos of him), but he needs to really trust the person in front of him. You can tell at the beginning he looked rather cold, almost uncomfortable. Then as the interview progressed, he quickly warmed up, and seemed to really enjoy this chat. Well done Captain, great job.
I watch these even if I don't know who the artist is, gives me an insight into some really good guitarists that I otherwise would never have heard of. Really cool stuff.
+TheMusicfan189 The best thing so far that happened to this show imho was Nick Johnston. What a guitarist! The other players are definitely extraordinary artists, but damn, Nick Johnston really changed my music library :)))
The captain knows so much about guitars and the sounds which really matter to a real bluesman. I've learned so much from this man for the past 4 years. Cheers Lee for being the captain that he is.
Hahaha! I live in LA- I saw Robben play at the Temple Bar in Santa Monica like 20 years ago. I was young (had no idea who he was at the time) and was so blown away by his playing that I approached him after the set and asked: “Hey man, do you teach lessons?” and he said No he didn’t... Now I get all his Truefire vids and it’s an awesome insight! He’s the best-
Wow! The Captain meets... is establihsing itself as THE source for relaxed interviews with outstanding musicians. I've seen Robben Ford for the first time in 81 at the Montreux Jazz Festival together with the Yellowjackets. And after all this years it seems, that he is not only a great player but a nice person as well. Thanks Captain for the best TV channel around!
Just came across this gem! Thanks guys. What I love about Andertons is the respect they have and show for all their guests and the products they review. True genuine values applied in everything they do. They also make you feel like you are there with them, sitting alongside for a chat! Well done Lee and the production team 👏 🙌 and thank you Robin! Great insight.
I had the pleasure to be at his show at the (very tiny) Larvik guitar festival in Norway this weekend. It was wonderful! His playing was pure silk. Strong, stil delicate.
I'm 63 years old and was just as excited to watch this video as I was watching Superman and the Lone Ranger in 1955. Robben Ford and Lee Anderton are my 2 favorite guitar players. The interview was fantastic. I wish they would have have played a few 12 bar choruses together.
I've followed Robben since the 1970's and was thrilled to watch his success rise over the decades. I can't believe how old 'Talk to your daughter' is now & the albums as a trio that followed were all superb. His tour with Larry Carlton is available on YT and features Robben, Larry, Travis Carlton & Toss Panos on drums. It is possibly some of the best live work from Robben & Larry that I have heard over the years. Thanks to both artists for such a massive contribution to the music world.
One of my top 5 all times players. I always say if I could only listen to one guitarist the rest of my life, it would be Robben Ford. Blues and Jazz master. Amazing range. What a great video.
