One of the reasons for Tim Conway breaking up the others is although they would practice the skits, Tim would never do it the same way. The thing that was different about The Carol Burnett Show was on other shows, Red Skelton, etc. the star always got the best lines. It was their show after all. Carol said if it’s good, do it. I don’t care who gets the laugh/applause so long as it’s good.
@dunringill1747
@dunringill1747 4 года назад
This reminds me of Jack Benny. Jack Benny went out of his way to purposefully give his guest stars the best/funniest written lines. He said in an interview that it was a win / win because it helped promote the guests while TV viewers would remember they saw it on "The Jack Benny Show". Since it made them look better, TV and movie stars were always more than willing to do a guest appearance on his show.

Vicky Lawrence is brilliant. The one person who can literally put Tim Conway on the floor. THAT takes some epic comedic timing. She's incredible.

Vicki Lawrence was the ultimate straight man. She held it together when the others were falling apart, and then she’d let rip a line that dropped the others to the floor.

"SNL" used to be great when John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, Jane Curtin, Gilda Radner, Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, and Eddie Murphy were on there. When they all left, the show went to shit. It's no longer worth watching.
@laural.enright4780

Yeah, to be fair the SNL of today is very different from the Saturday Night Live of long ago. The Carol Burnett Show was fantastic but there was a reason the cast of SNL was called The Not Ready for Prime Time Players. It's not really fair to compare the two because they each had their strengths and drawbacks. And that clip you saw with elephant...the Carol Burnett show was able to film that after Tim Conway did his thing. Saturday Night Live, being live, wouldn't have that luxury. So let's enjoy both for what they were.

I'm so glad you're now watching The Carol Burnett Show, one of my all time favorite shows! And the Television Academy (formerly Archive of American Television) interviews! Those interviews are so in-depth: Carol, Vicki, Harvey and Tim are all in the archive. And because I know you watch The Golden Girls, Bea, Betty and Rue have all been interviewed too. I highly recommend watching the Interviews archives, not necessarily as a reaction video, they're a pleasure to watch!

I met Carol Burnett at a very low point in her family's life. She tried to stand proud, but you could see it was tearing her apart. I had to make sure I didn't gush and fawn, even being a little kid, because of where I met her. I had such mad respect for her as a result of that.

Oh Ty- I’m so happy you’re doing these AND enjoying what pure gold this show was! Warms my heart- And I am enjoying living my childhood days with you, as I’ve not seen this sacred show myself, in years. I gotta get the box set-it’s not cheap last I checked.. but well worth it! Real acting/TV- Oh! That was the “old man“ character I’ve referenced.. the one swinging in the clothes rack and the firefighter one-Carol also started doing the “old woman” version when Tim’s was such a hit!! I was surprised Mr. Tudball and Mrs. Swiggins weren’t in this one- I wish I knew how to link it- Also, there’s the 4 of them doing a special onstage, talking with one another and audience (like what Vicky did here) it’s quite interesting and funny too- they were a fantastic group of folks.. not only on the show but also in life - I can’t wait to watch more with ya! Sending love always-❤️🤘🏼✌️

Loved this. I have watched these bloopers many times and laugh every time. Your comment about the new comedy shows is what us older folks have been saying for years. I also agree that shows like this should be brought back but you can't because of "political correctness", the show would be deemed offensive. Back then people knew how to laugh at jokes and not take them personally. Disclaimer, the opinions expressed are my own and do not represent the opinions of this channel or Ty. 😉

I was in the studio audience for the Christmas show of her final season. The show itself was great, but the highlights were when tech glitches made them have to do retakes. To keep it fresh for the studio audience, they would get progressively sillier and more improvisational on each take.Most of this was never aired. Helen Reddy was there to sing with Carol a song from Pete’s Dragon, a then newly-released Disney picture Reddy was in. The segment wasn’t meant to be comical at all, but the green screen that was supposed to make scenes from the movie appear behind them on video kept bleeding green into the video. By the tenth take, Burnett had the entire audience in stitches with ridiculously over-acted versions of her lines, originally meant to sound like spontaneous banter.
@vincegay986
@vincegay986 4 года назад
A PS-The Carol Burnett Show, as many shows still do, taped twice with different audiences on the same day-afternoon “dress rehearsal” and evening. Friday was taping day for the later years of the Carol Burnett Show. Shows would generally have their first airings 3-4 weeks later. The best of the two tapings would be edited into the final show. This kept multiple takes to a minimum, kept any one audience from getting worn out by multiple takes, and running out of laughter for the same repeated joke. For shows with studio audiences, laugh tracks are generally used only to smooth edits. The two tapings also mean that performers and crew don’t have to stay quite as late doing “pick-ups” (minor brief do-overs) after the audiences are gone. If a complicated segment goes particularly well in the afternoon, it might not have to be done for the evening audience. It looks like this sketch was done twice, and that the shorter elephant story without the bleepable line is the only one that aired. So glad they saved this version. Burnett had often said that what kept the 11-year run of the show from utterly exhausting her is that she hired great supporting regulars and let them shine. She discovered Lawrence when Lawrence was still a teenager. Conway, a veteran of the successful McHale’s Navy sitcom, and then multiple failed sitcoms, shone in frequent guest spots on Burnett’s show, and was eventually brought on as a regular. He’d found his niche. He kept his California license plate number, 13WKS, because of the number of series he’d been in that had bern canceled after 13 weeks.

A major point to remember is that the Carol Burnett Show was a live broadcast, not taped, not edited. So when Tim Conway went off-script, the rest of the cast had to try to keep it together. And notice how impeccable Tim Conway's timing is. how he waits until Carol just about has it together before he continues his story.

I remember watching the Carol Burnett Show every week with my Mom. It was always one of the funniest shows on TV. And you mentioned your wife doesn't like your attempts at humor sometimes. My husband and I will be married 35 years in May of this year. As I'm sure you know, no marriage is without it's share of disagreements sometimes. When we argue, or even when I am just in a bad mood all by myself, my husband is the only person on the face of this earth who can ALWAYS make me laugh - and break my bad mood or bad feelings. THAT is a true gift! I am happy that you are also so blessed! Being able to laugh together, even during a rough patch, is a wonderful way to connect with each other.

1) It’s hard to hear because the audience is laughing so hard, but after Vicky says “Is it your time of the month, Eunice?” she then says “Are you riding the cotton pony?”. That’s when Carol completely loses it. 2) Carol’s goof ups inspired SNL, which swore they wouldn’t be like Burnette, and they would not crack up. And that was true early on, but no longer. Now SNL cracks up just like the Burnette Show cast did.

Around 1978 or 1979, when I lived in Baltimore when I was a kid, WJZ Channel 13 use to air reruns of The Carol Burnett Show every weekday afternoons after school. We were living with my grandmother at the time, well my grandmother watched the Carol Burnett Show every afternoon before the news, and I would watch it with her, because I couldn't watch it when it originally aired, because it came on at 10pm and I was in bed by 8pm when I was a kid.

I know these are blooper of Carol Burnett Show and they improvise a lot but there is a show that was not improvised, at all, everything was done to script and that was I Love Lucy. There is an episode that is said to have one of the longest audience, because it was filmed in front of a live audience, laughs on television and it was the episode when Lucy and Ricky are doing the Tango while Lucy has a bunch of eggs in her shirt. I hope you check that out, plus many other episodes of I Love Lucy. It's amazing that they went by script because you'd think that some of those episodes were improvised with the comedic timing Lucille Ball had.

First time I ever heard Vicki's interview. Very interesting story. I was born in 1964 so I grew up watching many of these great comedy shows and agree that comedy today is simply not the same. TV series in general are not the same. Back then we had 3 main Television channels [ ABC, CBC & NBC ] and also PBS which carried Sesame Street, The Electric Company and Mr. Rogers Neighborhood. Anyway, even with that limited number of channel's I was able to find something good and entertaining to watch every single evening I turned on the set. Not so much today.

You should check out a skit with Tim Conway and Lyle Wagner. It is a Nazi interrogation skit with a Hitler Puppet. Some skits were reserved for bloopers but this skit made it to the TV show. Wagner was an American soldier and Tim was a Nazi interrogator. Wagner had no idea Tim Conway was going to pull out a Hitler puppet and you can see it in his eyes as he looks around for help during the skit. Tim Conway often worked with the costumes department or sound crew without telling his other cast members what he planned to do. He had them make the Hitler puppet. In an interview with Carol Burnett, she stated that Tim Conway was like that all the time whether there was a camera on him or not. Carol then told a story about a late night gathering with some of the cast and crew. Near the end of the gathering, Tim Conway excused himself to use the bathroom. Tim came back with toilet paper wrapped all around his head like a mummy with two holes for his eyes and one for his mouth. He had someone take a polaroid picture of him as he stuck out his bottom lip and crossed his eyes. He then carefully cut out his mummy face from the polaroid pic and glued it over his drivers license picture. Tim was Carol's ride home. Tim kept his mummy face on while he drove her home and purposefully went a different route through a known speed trap area. He sped up and sure enough a police car stopped him. He crossed his eyes and stuck out his bottom lip as the police officer approached the car and asked for his drivers license - which he then gave to the officer (with the mummy face still stuck on it).
