i met the carpenters backstage in 1974, and it was after the show, i told them both that the gratefull dead was in town, and i disnt know who i wanted to go see, anyway , i picked them , as i told karen "to hear you play drums as much as sing, cause i am a drummer and you are great"...her eyes got as large as pie pans and said oh, wow ....did you like the drum solo? ,,,,,i replied "it was much better than i expected,,,i will catch the dead later,,,,,you both were great......fellow drummer" she made a little squeek and grabed me and gave me this warm tender hug saying "thank you, thank you , thank you.....then a kiss on the cheek , looking at richard she said "see some do come to hear me on the drums,.....he laughed and and said you really made her night........she made mine,. the joy on her face from my comment i will always remember when i hear them . if only someone could have loved her enough to let her be the real woman she tried so hard to be, bless them both.....and perry como too.
Awesome story! You were so lucky not only to have gotten the chance to see them in concert, but also to have met them backstage! Unfortunately I was born long after Karen passed. I really wish I could've been around to see them in concert, but I'm so thankful for the privilege of being able to hear her beautiful voice. It was truly one in a million.
There will never be another singer like her who sang with a beautiful voice and was unpretentious and genuine. It was about the MUSIC then!!! Todays it’s about glitz, glamour, spectacle and celebrity. Not about singing from your heart. No one can hold a candle to Karen today! Today’s “music” is a lot of garbage! No one will ever remember it like they do her. Rest in peace, Karen!
Every time I hear Karen Carpenter's stunning, perfect voice I'm just so heartbroken that she was taken too soon. I wish I didn't have this reaction every single time but it's involuntary. What an angel.
@@harrykargenian4887 i concur!surely the most moving, beautiful, intimate, touching, pure female voice ever! the ultimate female 'crooner" who sang TO YOU NOT AT YOU... and greatest female singer of love and romance songs, looking for love, finding love and losing love..
Beautiful angelic voice! Too bad there aren't any recordings of Karen singing some of Perry's greatest hits. Her voice literally takes you by storm. Never be another like Karen's. She left us too soon.
That was 5 minutes of my time that I could have on loop for the rest of eternity. Soulful. I've never really listened to the Carpenters, but I'll be on my way to do so now. What more can be said about Perry Como? One of the greatest voices of all time.
It's becoming a habit of mine, watching Karen over and over. I just love the feeling that she exudes in most of her videos. Watching her nonchalantly keep time hits me in such the right place. In a world that is becoming increasingly less interesting, I am glad that we can still watch this lovely woman do what she loved. They just don't make them like they used to, and being a 24-year-old man in this age, I don't see much of a chance for me to find a love like the one I feel for the lost souls of old who never felt like they were worth a first chance, let alone any second ones. I've made it a point in this month, the month of Karen's birth, to try and see all that I can of her. The good and the bad. The ups and downs. Because if we give ourselves a small breather from our emotions, she was beautiful up until the end. The end that was much too quick. "Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgiastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that's no matter--Tomorrow, we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther, and then one fine morning... So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past." -F. Scott Fitzgerald, "The Great Gatsby" Oh, what I wouldn't give to get one chance to go back and do something, anything, to help this woman see the love and respect that so many millions offer to her every day, even 36 years on from her final day. I do hope that you've found a paradise somewhere out there, darling.
can i just say as a grown man of 49 years old, i literally bawl hearing karen sing "it's impossible"...not afraid to admit it this in regards to my favorite (and the greatest) female voice of love and romance songs ever!....
Thomas you are a man, Thank you. When I hear her start the song I love You, So. I LOVE IT. Her voice, the expressions, her eyes, her smile, and how she knocks those verses off. "And Yes I know How lonely night can be, your shadow follows me and the nights won't set me free" BRAVO !
@ Moses Cordovero. As beautifully soothing as Perry Como's singing voice was, his voice was a little too light and airy, just like Olivia Newton John's voice ,although beautiful , is also too light and airy. Como's voice lacked the beautiful , rich depth of Bing Crosby's voice. I think that most music fans probably do not regard Como's singing voice as the greatest male singing voice of all-time. Bing Crosby's, Frank Sinatra's , Johnny Mathis' and Matt Monro's singing voices were all much better than Como's. Even Andy Williams had a better singing voice than Como. Granted this is all just a matter of taste and opinion. Interestingly, Como got part of the lyrics to "Close To You" wrong when he sang the line, "So they sprinkled moonbeams in your hair" when the actual word in the song is "moondust". Karen Carpenter sounded much better singing Como's songs than Como sounded singing the Carpenters' hit songs.
@@michaelbarlow6610 agreed.. i would also throw in nat king cole as far as greatest male singers.. interesting, in that k.d. lang compared karen to nat king cole and even referred to her as more or less the female equivalent.. both karen and nat were the ULTIMATE "crooners"! the ULTIMATE singers who sang TO YOU NOT AT YOU...agree with you on olivia newton john as well.. pretty voice, but that's it... let's face it her appeal was also her looks and sexiness... olivia and karen were good friends, but even olivia would have to admit she was nowhere in the ball park of karen's legendary voice...karen sold her talent, olivia sold her looks and some talent..
Perry Como was a great crooner ,, but that angels voice coming out of that sweet woman... absolutely a golden voice ... she blew him away without much effort at all !
How great does Karen look here ? I wish with all my heart she had stayed like this.. and not lost all her weight the way she did.. I also wish she had got the right help with her illness.. She today would still be up there . Her voice would be richer.. I think she would have diversed into other things like acting or presenting.. she had a very wonderful personality..
KC looked great at that weight but by the early 80's she was just too thin. She fought the anorexia for close to a decade, that and the diet and purge meds was just too much for her body.
Two of my favorite singers. I miss both of them terribly. Karen's voice was hauntingly beautiful & Perry's was calming & effortless. Both of them were perfection. They're singing with the angels now.
Outstanding.... this is what music used to sound like.... refreshing, tranquil and peaceful...... thanks to Ron for putting this on RU-vid and thanks to the google boys for buying RU-vid.... without RU-vid the generations of today would never experience real music. Cheers......
What is Impossible is to sing as Karen sang, in addition to having been by far the best singer in the world, with the most harmonious voice, with perfect tones, what a beautiful woman with her charming smile, she continues to brighten our lives. Thank you Karen
such an amazing voice she had. A memory of my teen years. So long ago. She passed away and the world lost one of the most beautiful and rich voices ever.
yes,you are right.I feel sad in a good way when I hear the Carpenters as they bring so many memories to me.So much time has gone Carpenters,Osmonds,D.Cassidy ,what an amazing time.
A rare vocal solo from Richard Carpenter! Though I enjoyed all three voices, Karen's was the most velvety IMO. I was hoping she was going to belt out one of her own choruses like Perry Como did on his own songs. He was probably worried he'd get upstaged in a hurry! LOL!
It’s hard to hear anyone sing one of her songs. I really don’t think anyone should attempt to sing a Carpenter’s song no matter who the artist is! She is and was and always will be exceptional and in a class all of her own. No one can touch her vocally. She was perfection on earth.
Karen Carpenter.....the voice of an angel taken home. How I miss her!! Perry....pure class and a gentleman extraordinaire. Two of the greatest voices there have ever been!!
It's the first time I see this video. April 2019. Thanks for sharing. Karen is my favorite singer since I was young. From Cuernavaca, Morelos, México. Thanks again.
Fabulous. I was a little kid in the 50's playing on the kitchen floor with Mom's radio playing Perry Como. Then "We've Only Just Begun" was on the radio when my beautiful bride and I were first married. Karen was as close to perfect as a singer could get. What an astonishing voice.
Two of the greatest with a crystal clear majestic and magical voice complimenting each others hits... Wow.... there's no way to compare them to today's singers.
Not only was Karen the greatest singer and a fantastic drummer but she was great on these variety shows. She was campy and funny along with the best in that day. Karen on the Christmas shows were extra special with holiday songs.
