Best and most informative documentary on the Carpenters. In my opinion Karen had the most amazing voice ever!! I can remember the first time I heard her voice I was mesmerised and completely taken in by her ability to reach the soul. May she rest in peace and her legacy be remembered forever. 🙏

These are hands down the best documentaries of The Carpenters ever. So compassionate and beautiful , much like their legacy! I started to cry to see her drumsticks in the moratorium... I do not cry easily. Also, I think people underate Richard's vocals, his harmonies. In Karen's young life, though she tragically died so young; she accomplished so much and touched so many!! I am greatly enlightened by this sister and brother. They will always be Superstars! I heard them in the 70s, my teen years, but did not realize the excellence muscally. Every song she sang was amazing and Richard's arrangements and harmonies were just as important.

Justin, this series, "Carpenters ", was beyond❤ excellent! I'm a 69 year old gay man, which doesn't make any difference, however, I've loved them since I was a teenager! Their sound was so new and so more than beautiful to me! I have ALL of their albums and know most of the lyrics too. Of course more to the earlier releases. I saw them in Santa Maria at the college there when they were hardly famous, but famous to me! I was devastated as so many were when Karen passed. I'm grateful that my home is so close to Thousand Oaks. Anyway, your series is the very best. Disclosure, I cried during episode 3. So very sad! Thank you for putting this iconic duo in such a beautiful light!!❤

Big thank you for your tremendous job to honor Karen's living legacy. I finished the book Little Girl Blue 2 weeks ago and I found myself haunted by her tragic fate. What a poor soul! However the fact that there are still fans of Carpenters all over the world touches me. Years ago when I was much younger, I wrote to Carpenters International Fan Club a few times and Evelyn Wallace handwrote back to me. She even sent me a copy of an old Carpenters song book and a copy of The First Decade of Carpenters book. I still cherish Evelyn's letters and these books until now. Thanks for sharing Justin. Love your devotion so dearly. 😊👍

Justin, I have to be honest in saying this was the best video I've ever watched on RU-vid. You should win some sort of award for it. It was detailed, yet personal. Truthful, yet compassionate. Insightful and interesting. It must have taken a long time to put it all together. And what you said at the end was very true. Hoping that someday people will remember Karen and Richard for their incredible talent. Their contribution to the music industry. Their lasting effect on fans of all ages. And not just for Karen's untimely and tragic death. I've always felt the same way about Marilyn Monroe. She's usually portrayed as fragile, troubled and tragic. And yet in reality she was so much different from how she's remembered by most. She was an overcomer. Uniquely talented. She was ahead of her time, and yet remains timeless. I look forward to your next video. And btw, one on Marilyn's life in Los Angeles would be extra special. Thanks again for the great work.

Hiya J you should be so proud of yourself for this excellent story of Carpenters. The most beautiful way that you have captured darling Karen in her short troubled life. I myself suffered this awful illness in my teens and early 20s. I can only speak from experience but her mother Agnes was the root cause. Also the nasty press have blood on their hands too with their comments. I strongly believe her mothers love could have saved her along with more understanding of the illness. Darling Richard had his demons too to deal with. Luckily he caught his in time. I will always play Carpenters music , they both were amazing in their own rights. God bless Karen xxx I truly hope that Richard and Mary are enjoying their life. I wish them and family all the best wishes in the world. Well Done J you are a true credit to this website xxxx

This is a fantastic series, Justin. You did elevate them, and I hope it's viewed by thousands. Karen and I are the same age. Her death was a shock and it still seems hard to believe that she isn't here. It just felt like a mistake somehow. I love her voice. It resonates in the middle of my chest, if that makes sense. The hippie counterculture brought a lot of darkness and negativity, but their music was a light. It was centered and hopeful.

Thank you Justin, I am a 63 year old Aussie now, but lived through the beginning of this story in the early 70s...Karen and Richard's music saved me, when I was a confused and troubled 12 year old in 1970..Karen's voice was my only solace and friend for years, until I found myself in my 20s...Then Karen's sudden passing when I was 24 years old sent me back into a long depression, until I found my life partner in 1985...In 1997, after being Ev Wallace's penpal for many years, my partner and I travelled from Australia partly to pay homage to my musical Soulmate Karen...Ev told me how to find Karen's 1st resting place, and with Richard's blessing I was able to place a single yellow rose onto Karen's crypt...My now late partner Colin actually videoed the moment, because it was so surreal, and I needed to prove to myself that it actually happened...I know it might seem tacky and disrespectful to some, and I was criticised by some after posting the clip onto RU-vid..But others were grateful that we travelled half way around the World, to show our respects....Your story here fills in many gaps that Ev was reluctant to share with a penpal...She was awesome too...Thank you again...Cheers Terry

Very well done!! I was lucky enough to live through the Carpenter era. They were incredibly talented! Truly the age of the singer/song writer/ musician!! What most people forget about the AM radio only era is when you heard a hit record it was literally the entire nation listening!! Talk about a captive audience. It's hard to describe, but the almost instant status it gave recording artists was surreal. Glen Campbell & John Denver also carved out incredible niches for themselves during that same period, defying the rock/disco trends of the era.

Super job putting this together. I’m certain it took a ton of work but I’m also sure it was also ‘a labor of love’ as well. Unsurprisingly my favorite of the 3 parts, was part one, where the beginnings were the focus and reliving their initial success was a fun trip down memory lane. Parts 2 and 3 were more sobering but filled with informative nuggets, every life long Carpenters enthusiast loves to know. The stroll at the end, past the stars on the sidewalk of Hollywood Blvd, including the captions of where those fellow stars and collaborators are today, was especially poignant, being that we’ve unfortunately lost most of those greats since this was produced. Thank god Herb is still with us 🎺! (Feb ‘24). Tomorrow’s a Monday with a chance of showers. 🌧 Excellent work Justin! 👍

I loved this tribute to Karen Carpenter, and yes, I watched all three episodes. It’s by far, the most detailed documentary of her life I’ve ever seen. I’m just eight years younger than Karen and was a huge fan when I was in high school and university. Her death was shocking and was an important wake-up-call to girls my age who were starving themselves in order to look like super models. The publicity around her death probably saved countless lives. I often think about how much more she and Richard would have contributed to the music industry if she had lived a full life. Such a shame. Thank you for creating this tribute.

In the end, it's all about the music, the dedication and the work they put in and those amazing songs. Karen is and always will be the absolute queen, a goddess and she will never be forgotten. The legacy she left is unparalelled. Yesterday once more is also my favourite song by them and the song that made me a lifelong fan when i heard it on the radio in 1990 when i was 15. Other than the well known songs, i adore tryin' to get the feeling again (sadly unreleased in 1975), you from the album a kind of hush is an absolute gem as well, the whole of horizon album is mesmerising. I find myself always coming back to Richard and Karen, every few years, like some sort of comfort and i envy the people who have yet to hear them for the first time. Surely,, one of the greatest American groups of all time.

Justin, just finished watching part 3. Had been reading Little Girl Blue this past week and it was so nice to see the locations the book talks about. You showed so much love to Richard and Karen Carpenter. I have been a fan of theirs ever since my childhood when I first heard Karen singing on the radio early 1970 to 1971, while getting ready for school and eating breakfast. I didn't know who she was at the time, but a little boy just knew he loved that young lady's voice and it made him feel loved and comforted. As I got older, I soon found out who she was and have been a fan, as many others have, all my life. It warms my heart to see the younger generation being such fans of Karen still till this day. Just watching RU-vid videos of the youth of today hearing her for the first time, brings tears to my eyes to know how much she is still loved and appreciated. Thank you so much for taking all the time to put this together and sharing with her fans. I have watched all 3 parts straight thru this am and it just made my day! Keep up the good work!

great three part video biopic on the Carpenters - well done. I've read about this amazing yet tragic music team. I grew up listening to early rock and roll, then the British invasion, and then the psychedelic rock...and all of a sudden the Carpenters came on scene with their calming elevator music and knocked it out of the ball park. Sad that Karen is gone but at least her death had the world focus on anorexia nervosa which up until her death, it was not a well known eating disorder. Till this day, I love listening to to Carpenters and being transported back to the 70's on a music memory time machine.

I've been a HUGE fan of The Carpenters since I was a little girl, and still a huge fan today at the young age of almost 56! As a child one Christmas, my father asked what I wanted Santa to bring me, I said a drum set. His reply was that girls don't play drums, and my response was that Karen Carpenter does! Needless to say, Santa brought me a toy drum set that year! ❤ I remember the day she passed, I was in 9th grade and my Mom broke the horrific news of her passing when she picked me up from school. It was truly heartbreaking 💔. I now live in Orange County but make sure to stop by the Newville home every time I am in Downey!! Thank you, thank you, thank you for this great tour!!!

Watched all three parts from beginning to end and the only thing I can say is what a brilliant piece of journalism! Your instincts were so correct on not wanting to explore "those" three homes and continue by celebrating the Carpenters. I neither the "peek through the doors" at all offensive, nor the inclusion of Mickey Mouse; instead I found it rather rather sweet. The benches outside the door are extremely comforting and reassuring. Your final comments at the end of their legacy being elevated beyond the clouds are so honorable and such a tribute to who the Carpenters were / are and what they represent in the totality of the American music spectrum. Congratulations on creating such an informative telling of their story, with the sensitivity and intuitive sensibilities it so much deserves!

This has been a terrific series. I finally shed a tear for Karen after all these years. 32! And such a nice lady, too. God bless all, especially Richard.

Justin, I just finished watching all three parts of this amazing documentary and I am crying not only because of the tragedy of the loss of Karen Carpenter, but your passionate retelling of her story is so touching and heartwarming. I don’t know what else to say. I just love how you handled this and how you presented it. Thank you so much.

Very nicely done Justin! You had me hooked in all three videos. Our daughter is getting married in September and of course I requested We've Only Just Begun to be played at the wedding reception. My first album was Close To You and remember my father taking me to purchase it back in 1971. (I'm now 60) The Carpenters will forever be etched in our hearts as the most dynamic duo to have graced our lifetime. Thanks for the tour Justin! Great job!!

The song "I Can't Make Music" is my favorite. I've never heard anyone talk of it or seem to know it. Its so haunting, flawless, beautiful and sad. Enjoyed this documentary very much.

My taste in music is not in the easy listening style of the Carpenters; but Karen had a killer voice and Richard is a genius! (One could not be without the other because they were a glorious team together.) 'Superstar' and 'Goodbye to Love' are my favorites. My height was 5'5", and my weight was 82 pounds when Karen's voice was silenced in early 1983. It took me years to overcome the problems of anorexia. Heaven forbid it ever comes back! Thank-you, Richard, for your gifts of love to your sister and for warning so many of us about the dangers of starving ourselves beyond reason just toto lose weight. Justin.... your research is very good!🤩

I can't come anywhere close to picking a favorite song because I have a white hot love for every track they ever cut, but yes, "For All We Know" is a sublime track. A lower voltage, wistful song, and the entire track, every part of it, is superb. From their third album "Carpenters," the first of their albums I ever heard and, ok. that's my favorite album. As great as is the album "A Song For You," "Carpenters" is more artsy while at the same time hammering away at the hits in the top 20. I love love love "Offering," but it's youthful and naive, focused on fun rather than sublime, and did not bring the hits. "Close to you" has its high points, and is artsy, and has two smash hits, but two isn't many in Carpenters land. With "Carpenters" they really, not just hit it out of the park, but right through the roof of the domed stadium. The artsy record cover, the awesome logo, the string of hits, that contemplative closer "Sometimes," Oh I just love the whole thing. With "A Song For You" they amped it up to a ridiculous level, that one was their "Thriller" with a dumbfounding seven hit tracks along with some fun and great filler tracks, but they backed off a little on the artsy content and sacrificed the contemplative mood for some fun. After that things went downhill with no subsequent album working as well as those first four. My opinion, in order: Carpenters, A Song For You, Offering, Close to you.

Hola! New subscriber in Ecuador. I was in my penultimate year of high school, driving around with my friends, when we heard the news on the radio. Even as kids, we knew the scale of the loss.

I have always loved their music. It was the music of my life. I was heartbroken when Karen passed away. I'm so disappointed that they are not in the Rock and Roll hall of fame. Their sound was unique and special. My favorite songs are Can't last a day without you and Look to your Dreams. Thank you for putting this altogether.
