Sad, isn’t it, that most don’t realize true genius until it’s gone... so many made fun of the Carpenters when they were in their prime. Only too late do we realize what true geniuses they were. Karen simply had one of the finest voices EVER. She was also a gifted drummer. Richard had an immense talent in picking out the perfect songs for them; he was also a fine musician in his own right, plus a great arranger/producer. What a duo!
@Thou Swell Yup. Knew they were dope from Day One. All the kids in my neighborhood stopped what they were doing when a Carpenters song came on the radio and just SANG.
Yes, she was a great singer and drummer, and Richard was a great producer and arranger, technically. But, their actual music still sucks. It’s garbage.
This is the song that I heard on top 40 radio in 1969 while baking cookies with my grandma in her kitchen. I was 6 years old, and from that point on I was a ginormous Carpenters fan. I still am today, and I’m pushing 60!
I just finished reading Little Girl Blue. All Carpenters fans need to read this book. Karen loved needlepoint and made one for Richard that said, "Without RC, there would be no KC". Then in 1993, Richard was preparing to release her on solo album. He called "Itchey" Ramone to get the original artwork and any commemoration that when with the album. After a week, she called Richard back saying she found Karen's commemoration. It read, "To my brother Richard, with love". Richard burst into tears on the phone.
EU AMO OS CARPENTERS DESDE 1980 QUANDO CONHECI E ACHO SUA MORTE UM ABSURDO E UMA DOENÇA PSICÓLOGICA QUE ELA TEVE CAUSANDO UMA INSUFICIÊNCIA CARDÍACA POIS QUERIA EMAGRECER NÃO SEI O QUE. UMA MULHER LINDA DE TALENTO E UMA VOZ INCRÍVEL. SINTO FALTA DE SUA PRESENÇA NESTE MUNDO ATÉ HOJE E ESPERO QUE ESTEJA COM DEUS COMO VC DISSE.
The Beatles would be very proud of you singing this song. Karen you left us to early. I listen to your Awesome Beautiful outstanding Incredible music each day. I miss you 😢 you add incredible value to each of my days with your Golden Impeccable flawless voice of Angel. Rip your music will live for Eternity and all of the planets in the solar system.
Karen actually bumped into John Lennon as she was leaving a restaurant (and he was just arriving). He mentioned to her that she has a great voice. She ran off in tears as she thought he was being sarcastic but he was being deadly serious.
This is what everybody raves about with that incredible voice, a very rare lower-register (Mezzo-Soprano, then Soprano as higher for women singers), and her 3-octave range! I've never heard any woman singer able to hit those powerful lower-notes, and still reach the upper level as she did, and never have since her passing or ever will.
Somewhere buried in earlier long-ago comments on this video, someone paid her the greatest compliment: "Her voice was HD before there was HD." Truer words were never spoken.
For women singers, could be, but there is Mariah Carey (19 #1's), [or Diana Ross, Supremes] just short of The Beatles with 20 #1s on the Billboard Hot 100 record. But for all, you have Elvis, John and Paul, and George to also compete with that "most recognizable voice in the world." But no doubt Karen is right up there with the others! What an incredible, magnificent talent, in both singing and drum playing! What a loss on Feb. 4, 1983; now 40 years ago! Hard to believe it has been that long.
What a gorgeous arrangement. Karen was only 19 when she recorded this. To have that much vocal maturity at such a young age is a testament to her genius.
Throw some good genes in there also, as Richard & Karen were inherently blessed w/ talent. May seem like an anomaly in a way as they were really right out of middle America.
She was 19 when she recorded this well before her problems. This actually shows Richards great arrangement and Karen’s amazing ability to make it come to life.
Joy. Pure joy. I only wish I lived in an alternative universe where Karen were still here. That, I think, is the definition of heaven. I'll see you there KC (I hope). Rest it peace beautiful one. XXOO
Karen, I wasn't even born yet when you tragically passed but what a loss. I grew up on your music and still remain obsessed with this song, your voice and the sound of The Carpenters to this day. Now my kids listen to it to :) The Carpenters will always be remembered and never duplicated. Rest easy sweet angel.
+Shane Anthony As do I, both awesome in many different ways! I am so thankful to have these songs available as they are because the music today is slim pickings!
Love & hate relation...every song she sang was angelic. On the flip side, tears roll out because of all the unhappiness in her life...you can hear it in her voice. Always wanted to see the Carpenters when she was alive. Peer pressure shut that notion down, as my friends were into Alice Cooper & Black Sabbath. So was I, yet to this day if you put me on a deserted island, I'll choose Karen over them!!!
In recent years, when Richard was asked about the "Ticket To Ride" promo film, he cited it as one of the highlights in their career. Had Karen lived she would've echoed that same sentiment, but, typical of her personality, she would have poked fun of the closeup shots of her mouth!... Love you forever, little drummer girl. Rest easy... ❤ 🌹
This version and Karen was just incredibly wonderful. I wish she could have really known that and been strong enough to believe in herself and her incredible talent.
As an aspiring musician myself, age 14, I'd been steeped in the Beatles and the entire 60s, early 70s music scene. Then came the Carpenters. I recall hearing her voice for the first time. Regardless of my propensity for rock, I could not help being drawn deeply into her voice. Many years later I'd realize that Richard was the genius that showcased Karen's voice perfectly...choosing the right keys, the right songs, perfect arrangements. It's so sad that she, off all people, could not find happiness.
2023 and still the best way to jumpstart your positive mental health in the morning. She and her brother and their combined talents are truly unmatched and I think she actually sounds something like a special angel sent to bless us for a short time but couldn’t stay away from heaven for too long, he needed her back to lead the heavenly chorus. Dear sweet Karen, I miss you.
Karen had such a rich, melodic, pure, rounded & soothing voice that only comes around once in a million years! She was absolutely one of the best vocalists of our time! So sad she passed at such a young age and (we) missed the lifetime of her greatest potential. RIP sweet, lovely lady! Thankful you left us with music to enjoy.
This is one of several Beatles' songs (along with "Help" and "Nowhere Man") that the Carpenters did not merely "cover," but made their own. By giving "Ticket to Ride" their own flair, they made it as much as standard for themselves as it had been for the "Fab Four."
This song was released in the Spring of 1970 when I was a CAP cadet doing search and rescue. I first heard it on the radio as we were returning home from a search in the Sierras in May 1970 in which 3 search volunteers were killed. The song hit me that three men had died, and after all these years I always think of them whenever I hear this song. Ironically, the search was conducted under winter weather conditions just like what is depicted in this video.
Having heard The Beatles and The Carpenters versions of Ticket to Ride, and I love both versions, but if I had to choose which one is the best, I would go for the Carpenters. Karen had a voice that you could understand every single word she sang. A voice made in heaven. Even John Lennon once said that Karen had a fabulous voice. RIP Karen and John.
No less a musical giant than Paul McCartney said that Karen was the greatest female vocalist--EVER! He is quoted saying about her, "the best female voice in the world: melodic, tuneful and distinctive." Highest praise possible, coming from one of the greatest male singers ever. This song, fittingly a Beatles' classic, released in Oct. 1969, prior to "Close to You," the next year, illustrates perfectly her emotional impact on those who appreciate good pop-rock music. They sold well over 100 million records. Loved you and your most expressive contralto voice ever since I heard "Close to You" (1970), Karen. Nobody has come close to your voice since you shockingly went away the day your heart failed. Karen Carpenter, 32 (Mar. 2, 1950-Feb. 4, 1983). "Think I'm gonna be sad..."
True, but she was also considered one of the best drummers and was awarded such an honor over John Bonham, he of Led Zeppelin fame no less. People forget that she was an amazing musician not just a vocalist. Female drummers who sing and play like Karen have never ever been duplicated. I cannot think of a male who covered drums and lead vocals with such precision and quality for that matter, that is how special she was...
@@songshineoriginalmusic Well -- I'll put Phil Collins in there. He could sing and drum at same time. He didn't do that often though. My two favorite all time talented musicians are Karen and Phil. The two most angelic voices to me in popular music are Jon Anderson and Karen Carpenter. Can you imagine if those two angels made a baby? Wow-- mind blown:)
I grew up on The Carpenters' music. To this day i find myself humming and singing their songs more than any other. Beautiful music, Karen's voice is still one of the greatest female voices ever, and their harmonies still stand out as some of the finest in music. I watched their special on PBS last night.....admittedly it brought tears to my eyes, with tears streaming down my face when it ended. I remember where I was and what I was doing when I learned Karen passed - I sobbed. Such a sad ending to one of music's most unforgettable voices. But I am so very grateful for the hundreds of hours of enjoyment I got from listening to their music and for the songs that are still very much a part of my life each and every day. Thank you Carpenters for sharing your incredible gift from God with us.
She has this rare power dropping down swiftly and deeply resonating ("...and he don't care-air...") from 1:15-1:21, and again at 3:14-3:30 hitting all those lower-register notes, that gives her that special emotion on why her voice and her is so loved and missed so deeply. Never heard any female singer even remotely approach her deep, remarkable tone and resonance! [UP-tone] "Think I'm gonna be sa-ad [DOWN-tone]! Think I'm gonna be sa-ad! [UP] Think I'm gonna be sa-ad! [DOWN] Think I'm gonna be sa-ad! [UP] Think I'm gonna be sa-ad! [Down] Think I'm gonna be sa..."
I think she was a mezzo, maybe. alto, at the least. she has too much in her higher range to be a contralto. If you want a hear a great contralto, listen to Alice Faye, an actress singer from the 30s-40s
No, she's a contralto, because I can sing note for note with her and I am a tenor. I remember this song in 1969 while in college. I thought then that she had magic... and she did!!
I'm not ashamed to say this but Karen's voice brings me to tears every time I seriously hope she is in pop music's hall of fame doesnt really matter now she's surely singing with the angels for eternity
Reading a lot of the comments here is bringing me to tears. So much praise...so much love....so much appreciation....and lots of sadness... Karen was loved by many many people and several generations...those that grew up listening have done her voice justice by passing it on to their children. And why is this sad to me? Because everything everybody is saying about her is what I want to say also...and I'm sad she can't read what she meant to all of us and how melancholy we are about her passing 36 years ago. RIP our dear and loved, Karen Carpenter.
I love The Carpenters. I want to go back to the past to feel this again... I need a ticket to ride...Time machine...If you got one for me..Thanks for sharing.
In terms of singing, I don’t think it gets better than the first few lines of this song. The purest, richest, most melodic and emotional voice I’ve ever heard. Spine tingling!!
The expression on her face and the look in her eyes says it all towards the end.......Think I'm gonna be sad......, Think I'm gonna be sad......., think I'm gonna be sad........, think I'm gonna be sad. Thanks for the memories, RIP
I respect that you are voicing your opinion in a non-derogatory way. You are entitled to like the Beatles version more and thank you for not trying to push your views on everyone else. It is very noble of you.
Even Paul McCartney said Karen carpenter was the best female singer with unique melodic and distinctive voice And she is my favourite singer 😊 I love her melodic ,cheezy voice
Karen feels like an angel was born into the world as a human, left behind many beautiful songs and then left for heaven. This is something I always feel.
What an exquisite cover of that song. Her vocals are so clean and robust. Karen had the ability to hit really low notes for a female, I always liked hearing her almost drop to baritone sometimes. Her vocal slide when she sings "I think its today" is astounding. Effortless, and she doesn't use an "H" sound to push it out, like many do. She also doesn't reshape her vowels on long notes, not that that's bad. It just takes effort sing clean, natural vowels. I also thought it was pretty ballsy to resolve to that sharp note on (he don't )"care"...man. I grew up with the Carpenters, as my parents loved them, so, even though naturally found my own music eventually, in high school (a lot of metal), but I never outgrew The Carpenters. Talent is talent.
I am so glad I was a teenager during the 70's so I could be apart of the greatest music of all time. The Carpenters just made it perfect. Karen's voice was so unique, like no other I have heard.
I love this ballad version more than the one of Beatles. It used an arrangement by Richard Carpenter which drastically differed from the Beatles original. So beautifull!!
I remember when I first heard this song when it came out in '69. I don't think it got the attention and respect it needed, as we were all hearing the future, a sound we had never heard before and hence could never have considered. So, it took some time for our ears to accept what we were hearing. And, that is witnessed by the fact that the song kept returning to the charts over and over again like few other songs have ever done.
I like the Beatles and all their songs. This version of Ticket to Ride is one of my favorites of Karen and Richard. Course, all her songs are my favorites. I am grateful that we have RU-vid so we can watch and listen to all the songs we grew up with. I am 63 years old and really miss the songs I grew up with , but wait, there's RU-vid now. YES!!! We here all love Karen but lets not forget Richard. His harmony really added to the songs Karen sang. R I P Karen. You will never be forgotten. And neither will you Richard. I wish to thank them for enriching our lives with their lovely music . ^__^
Whether she sang the Carpenters' songs or others' songs, Karen's voice was simply angelic. A beautiful soul and talent lost too young in life. RIP, Beautiful Karen. Your music lives on. You will forever be a beautiful Superstar.
God Bless You Miss Karen Carpenter, you are in top of this world, You left us your music and videos. Never be forgotten beautiful voice and beautiful Lady. R.I.P.
I think I'm gonna be sad I think it's today Yeh The boy that's driving me mad is going away. He's got a ticket to ride He's got a ticket to ride He's got a ticket to ride and he don't care. He said that living with me was bringing him down Yeh He would never be free when I was around. He's got a ticket to ride He's got a ticket to ride He's got a ticket to ride and he don't care. Don't know why he's riding so high He oughta do right He oughta do right by me Before he gets to saying goodbye He oughta do right He oughta do right by me I think I'm gonna be sad I think it's today Yeh The boy that's driving me mad is going away. He's got a ticket to ride He's got a ticket to ride He's got a ticket to ride and he don't care
There was and has never will never be another Karen Carpenter voice. Her voice was magic. The Carpenters were a group unequaled to none other. Karen did not need to leave us so soon. She was a beautiful person both inside and out. It makes me very sad that her disease was not known about when she passed away. Karen Carpenter is still a legend. RIP
I absolutley love the Beatles, they were and still are one of the most influential bands in the history of music, and to here this version of 'ticket to ride' is mesmerising! Karen had a wonderful unique voice and to here this version in their own style is just brilliant, they were a band that could get away with singing Beatles songs.
Song came out year I graduated from High School; of course The Carpenters were always one of my favorite group. Karen would now have been 65 and who knows what impact she might have had. Really loved her voice and songs her and Richard wrote.
Karen Carpenter is the most amazing women. Her voice is like that of an angel, and she will never be forgotten. I learned how to sing by listening to her, and I owe my voice to her.
Feb. 4 will be 41 years (1983). Last Dec. 8 (2023) was 43 years after we lost John Lennon. Both, the most shocking musician's deaths I've ever felt. None will ever approach losing her at only 32, and he at 40. Nobody could have predicted their loss at such early ages, and for reasons that could never be believed or thought could happen.
