An excerpt from The US Festival 1982: The US Generation Documentary. The Cars played on the second day of the three-day concert, performing on Saturday, September 4, 1982, in San Bernardino, California. They were sandwiched between Santana and The Kinks. According to setlist.fm, the band played 15 songs; this one was the second in the set.
This video is being uploaded as a supplement for an article I wrote about The Cars. Because the purpose is to non-commercially educate and offer a critical assessment, it is being uploaded under the terms of Fair Use. No copyright infringement intended.

Ben Orr was a true talent- both as a bassist and a vocalist. His voice blends so seamlessly with Ric Ocasek, it's often impossible to tell the difference!

O my gosh BENJAMIN ORR , the facecial expressions he makes I Love him , always liked the Cars I had no idea that he was singing all those songs as the front man MTV made a big mistake no showing him enough back in the 80s, I've just discovered this video 2 days ago, I can't believe that he has passed, I am CRUSHED!!! We are the same age , just thinking about my own mortality, somewhat frightened, just watching him in these videos in the prime of his career, and all of these videos of him make me so happy.

I know how you feel last week I found out a woman I grew up since kindergarten had passed 12 yrs ago. I was shocked. Our mothers was pregnant at the same time. I miss her memory, she was so much fun. Rip 🌹

Ben Orr just sounding absolutely perfect! So sad that he’s gone. Looking at his son in the audience at the Rock and Roll HOF induction ceremony I was taken by what appeared to be true graciousness and appreciation over his dad’s posthumous honor. I never met Ben nor do I know anyone who knew him but he certainly seemed so real, decent and unaffected by fame. It would make sense that he passed good lessons on to his son.

You can see here that dear God endowed Benjamin Orr with the best qualities. He really didn't save on anything here - such a beautiful look, this incredibly strong voice, this attitude .... Unlikely, this wonderful performance by Benjamin and the great The CARS. Each of them was generous.

Great song and a master class in live performance. A friend introduced me to the cars in 1978 and I am grateful as I was deep in a prog rock rut. I never saw them live but RU-vid is a welcome consolation. Great band.

Heartthrob Ben Orr- that first few seconds with his baseline takes me back to all the stadium concerts back in the 70s/80s. Butterflies in my stomach! I never got to see The Cars live and I'll always regret it.

I was in Junior High when Heartbeat City came out and since my parents didn't have MTV I never saw the video for "Drive" and never knew Ben also shared lead singer duties. As I've gotten older I definitely like the Ben led songs better.

Why don't we have a proper Cars documentary? They were such a huge part of the late 70's and 80's, not to mention their songs are played every single day on classic rock stations around the world.

I wish we did, but I suspect that documentary writers don't see the value in it. There is nothing sensationalistic about their history: no drug overdoses, no domestic abuse, no media battles. Just regular guys kicking ass, relationships falling apart, and life going on. To us, their dynamics are fascinating, but I think we're a pretty small group of deep fans in the overall scheme of things.

I CANNOT Thank You Enough! Have been on the lookout for The US Festival 82 since glimpsing a TV playback version with glare from the screen obscuring the picture. I knew it would be glorious in full view, and BY GOD, this is exquisite. As another viewer commented about being on stage with the band, it is like Benjamin Orr is singing directly to us. Raw and real. Thank you for making my month of July adORRable with this discovery.

I was there...I can only vaguely remember the Cars show because there were so many bands back to back for hours and days. As great as their music was (and it was great and incredibly cutting edge for the time), their energy level and connection to the audience was not the best compared with other bands of the time. Seeing them now, I'm really impressed with Robinson's drumming which I didn't appreciate at the time. Such a fun weekend it was!
