The transition of Double Life into Shoo Be Doo into Candy-O is an ultimate example of why albums were, and are so great. These songs work together to tell a sonic story. Yes, they are cool individually but together they become mind-blowing.
I don't care what anyone says , this music will never disappear . Music today fades away overnight and it sucks ! Just my opinion . The music from my generation hasn't gone anywhere , it's here to stay !!!!!
Anyone else remember when you could buy an album for only a few bucks and it was full of great music like this. Some albums were so great that EVERY song was excellent. This is one of the best imho.
Yes, back then it was a whole experience. That's what made it so special. It's not like these days where you just press a button or whatever. Music does not mean as much these kids. It's kind of sad.
It's much better to be underrated. Once bands become universally popular, original fans turn on them, and brand them as "sellouts". As if these bands exist for them, and them alone. Happens time and time again. These bands mostly only want to be true to themselves, and their musical art.
Can still listen to Candy-O over and over again, there is so much magic with this record. always listen to the entire happening front to back, a musical thrill ride!
@@SLOPPEWALL The Cars basically led the New Wave and all real musicians know that. It wasn't Talking Heads. It wasnt Blondie. it wasn't Television. It wasn't even Elvis Costello or whatever.
I completely agree @Robert Burbank. They had been eligible to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Shame for almost 15 years before they finally got the nod. By that time Benjamin Orr had already passed. Also, Elliot Easton is a guitar god who doesn't get the recognition he deserves. web.musicaficionado.com/main/article/why_the_cars_elliot_easton_is_an_overlooked_guitar_god_by_richbienstock
@@blackjack2933 I just thumbs-downed because I didn't like Kiss, ever. But that doesn't mean you can't love them! I never understood what was good about them, but I can say that about a lot of bands/songs. Doesn't mean others can't get them!
@Cletus Beauregard -- Yes indeed. And a few non-debuts from '78 that were great as well. Talking Heads, More Songs About Buildings and Food. Blondie, Parallel Lines. Wire, Pink Flag. Elvis Costello, This Years Model. Nick Lowe, Pure Pop for Now People.
June 2023. This music was so professionally done. The production, engineering, arrangements, song writing, musicianship. I'm safe in saying this music will still be fantastic long after we are gone. It's just timeless and so perfectly enjoyable to listen to. ❤
Hell yeah, it is... And you have to listen to all three in a row. Shoo Be Doo going into Candy-o is the best editing. Takes me back to 1979, at a house party I was at, wall to wall drunk teenagers, and as it went into Candy-o, everybody jumped up and started rock'n out.
Best music of my childhood pretty much. I am a lifelong, 54 year old new wave and all-things-synth lover. I admit, the album cover was rather appealing too, when I was a teenage kid.
Michael Bauers got cha by 1 yr -55 Remember this album listening over & over couldn’t believe my ears this album and The Cars were SO influential in my “formative” years me too love punk new wave synth garage
Riding in my crappy Datsun. But I had a Clarion cassette deck some Jensen Tri axles and one hell of a strong pioneer amp equalizer. I thought I was the stuff. Absolutely fantastic music. It personified to me what high school was. Rick and the band were a great sound. Might even be one of the best sounds of that era
Yes I remember in college rockin' out to this in my friend's old Celica. On the way to bars he would swerve all over the road on purpose...that was back before drunk driving was a federal offense. If you had any kind of an aftermarket stereo you were cool. Especially if you had an "equalizer / booster"! How times have changed....
'My' car, and it's 'beating heart' of amplified tune-age, was a glorious and most gratefully appreciated teenage sanctuary. That music was our religion and we worshipped at speed.
People can say what they want about their Favorite band, and their favorite Music. But, "The Cars" To me are in a League all by Themselves. They were a part Rock, part New Wave Band. With Lyrics and Music that no other band of it's time could reach. Do I like Aerosmith, of course I do. Do I Love Pink Floyd Yes I do. Do I Love Led Zeppelin, Yes I do. But, I have a Special Place for The Cars also... From "Just what I Needed" to Their last Hit. "You are the girl." and Everything in Between. I will always jam to them, as long as I can Breathe on my own... I'm be jamming to "Since your Gone." ✌
This three song segue is as good as continuous segues. Although it may have been done by the Cars’ four song segue on their self-titled debut LP. The first two songs overlap smoothly while the last two end and stop perfectly effortlessly. Every time I think of the Cars as a band loaded well crafted rock and pop songs, I have to remind myself that they were more than that. Their musicianship gave us seemingly perfect albums that took us on musical adventures.
I got this on a digital d/load, but it really annoyed me how the three were broken up. So I used WavePad to "glue" them back together, naming the result "doubleshoobeecandy.mp3"
I agree ....the segue from Shoo be Do to Candy-O is fantastic.....Double Life segue to Shoo Be Do is terrific too.....credit to Roy Thomas Baker as producer
Yeah I'm right there with you. it's a well-known fact that Ric hated touring. I never had a chance to see them in concert either and I've been to over 100 shows. Oh well.....
I saw the cars in 1980 at the Boston Garden. I was 12 years old I had floor seats. The cars bearly moved a muscle is like watching five mannequins. But I didn't care I was seeing my favorite band no pyrotechnics no laces no smoke just five guys jamming. Thank you guys for being my first favorite band
I think thats awesome your first concert was the cars..my first concert was Johnny cash i was 7 years old in the 80s...he was with june carter cash playing on a makeshift stage on the football field of klamath union high school in klamath falls oregon. My grandparents were running the concession stand so my brother who was 3 and myself had to be babysat by my aunt durring the concert and i remember not a lot of people being there but cash was my first concert..never got to see the cars but have been to a lot of concerts since...from local punk bands to k.c and the sunshine band, cheap trick, the cure to celine dion but you always remember that first concert..
Anna Sloan my first concert was The Bangles. It also happened to be their last Concert. Sadly, I too never got to see The Cars live. I was just getting into them my freshman year(1987) in High School. The best live show ive ever been to was Oingo Boingo.
I saw them 3 times and it was pretty much the same. One show the only thing said to the audience was 'Hello Dallas' from Rick between the 3rd and 4th song. Maybe a 'thank you' at the end..One of my top 5 bands of all time..
The Cars were so unique,so toe tappin,so just right for the time period, and even today. When they first came out, like millions knew,I as well, said this band is going to make it,and the rest is history. Rest in peace Rick and Ben.
RIP Ric Ocasek . 1st album I bought. Fought with my mom over it but in the end I got it (she did not like the cover!). Spun the entire album a million times!
1 of the best music groups of all time in any genre to me, grossly underrated in my opinion. The Cars put out many a good song and awesome albums. I recall them well from my later grade / middle schools years in the 1st half of the 80's. R.I.P. to both Ric Ocasek and Ben Orr for writing many of their cuts
@@seanoneil277 I've around before zep was thing and I don't any point to them . Kinda like I don't see all the fuss about skynrd. They really did not become famous until they killed like half the band in the plane crash.
@@lilorbielilorbie2496 I liked Skynyrd, didn't ever think them superstars etc, mostly because their music was Southern and in the USA, Southern tends to mean "ignorant redneck" etc. So I never thought they'd be huge outside the South. Their first 2 albums contained some good songs that didn't get FM play. Free Bird was their big radio song mostly because it was long, had blistering guitars, and went thru several mood shifts in one song. If it wasn't so overplayed on FM in the 70s & 80s it might sound fresh instead of stale. But I say all this with a soft spot for Southern music & people even though I'm not any kind of Southerner -- except maybe to a ME or NH native. 😂 And you're right about the plane crash -- but remember, they were still pretty young and folks were expecting bigger things from them. Around the time of that crash, FM radio turned away from Southern music and toward hair metal, early rap, and bloated synth stuff. The 80s were a bit of a wasteland for guitar rock on FM. Maybe thanks to the Skynyrd plane crash?😂
My memory- driving to the Jersey shore in my super old Plymouth Duster and my self installed cassette player with the windows down and blasting the Cars as loud as we could get it. So happy I was part of that era.
It was Christmas Eve 1977, my friend had two hits of Orange Sunshine. We took the blotter (first time) 14 years old. After an hour we thought we got ripped off. Well my buddy had bought the first Cars album, it just came out for another friend for Christmas. Well bored now, we unwrapped it and put it on. Suddenly we realized the acid was not a rip off as we were blown away completely, we had never heard anything like it, not really our style but that album was a masterpiece for that time, and was great start to a great trip. Really, I can't explain how awesome that album sounded that day. My friend passed recently, we had lost touch but I know that Christmas evet was one we remembered always. First time Orange Sunshine and the first Cars album on Christmas Eve.🌞🌞🌞🌞✌️👁️🌙🪐🤡✨💫⭐⭐✨☄️☄️🪐🌌🌔🌕🌖🌗🌘🌍🌎🌏🚓🚗🛻🚕🚓🚀🚀✈️🏵️
lol... I TOTALLY understand what you mean..!!! I always Loved this band,... But,... Listening to them while trippin is an INCREDIBLE experience that only those who have done it will ever know the feeling it creates..!!! These 3 songs and "Moving in Stereo into All Mixed Up" as well as several other Cars gems create such beautiful sonic landscapes that not many bands could ever pull off...!!! Keep on rockin my friend..!! :)
Any of these three could be in my top 10 favorite tunes. They made few a song that didnt have a foot tapping beat or lyrics you find yourself singing to. God bless the 80's and The Cars
It's funny how worked up people can get over a dam cartoon..!!! Hahahaha My mom was the same way until I had to tell her she was getting upset over a couple different color pencils and somebody's imagination..!!! She kinda dropped her attitude after that... lol
God, I love what vinyl brings to classic albums. The warmth and crackle allows me to listen with new ears. I get it with this gem and The Police's Zenyatta Mondatta, among others.
The transition of Double Life into Shoo Be Doo into Candy-O is an ultimate example of why albums were, and are so great. These songs work together to tell a sonic story. Yes, they are cool individually but together they become mind-blowing....also i hate it when people copy and paste !!!!!!!!!!!
This brings back the nostalgia of the seventies. Vinyl Albums, the album art, some albums included cool posters or booklets, buying the music mags to find the lyrics. Boom Boxes, Lave Lamps, Black light posters, going to concerts, muscle cars still ruled, tricking out a van, It was still cool to dress like a hippie, Even though I don't smoke weed now, but as a head I did then. What I miss the most is a group of friends getting together, at someone's house, apartment, lake or a river. Everybody smoked and the rock and roll was jamming. We all had a great time and some awesome conversations! Unlike other gatherings which included lots of alcohol,( I did attend those also) there was never any violence, yelling or arguments. The only thing people argued about was who was going to do a munchie run. The product known as synthetic marijuana is not marijuana! It is a man made substance. You hear about people having psychotic episodes, freaking out or doing stupid things, etc, because they were "smoking marijuana." This is not true. They have adverse episodes because they smoked the man made crap, not because they smoked marijuana! In my days of smoking weed and partying with friends, there were never any the above mentioned things, a good time was had by all.
While half of my friends were glued to DISCO in 1978...the rest of us had discovered, early on I must say, bands like Judas Priest, AC/DC, Robin Trower...and the Cars. Still listen to them all. My Grandchildren think their Grandparents are crazy! *sigh*....hehehe! They're correct!
My worst trade was giving Neil Diamond's greatest hits for Billy Joel's Glass House. I like Billy Joel, my favorite Joel album is the Stranger, but in the trade, I lost out! Lol
And to think people were disappointed when this album came out. It was such a good album it just took people a while to digest it. And it took Antonio Vargas' niece to convince him to do the cover. She was a big fan and he changed his mind and decided to do it.
Cars are the shit ! Still sounds like New Music today ! I LOVE THE CARS, favorite band by a long shot! Can listen to them for the rest of my life with a smile on my face
