Some time in the 80s I found a cassette tape on the side of the road. Using a trusty number 2 pencil I fixed the ribbon. It was a Cars tape and it was glorious.

The Cars were somewhat unique in that they had two lead singers, Ric Ocasek (rhythm guitar) and Benjamin Orr (bassist). While this song was written by Ocasek, the lead was sung by Orr. Sadly, Benjamin Orr died of pancreatic cancer in 2000, prior to the band's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018.

Diane, it sounds familiar, because you also heard this in the movie Transformers. The movie was released in 2007. The scene where the song is played. Takes place when Shia LeBoeuf gives Megan Fox a ride home. 😉 The song was produced in 1985.

Paulina Poriskova was one I crushed on back in the day, her and Christie Brinkley who married Billy Joel for 10 years and Rod Stewart's wife Rachel Hunter and I can't not mention Heidi Klum who also married a singer. The Cars were huge in the 80's. This song is a bit atypical for them, a very mellow, melancholy vibe. Also Benjamin Orr sings lead - it's usually Rick Ocasek. A bit of trivia, Ocasek's son Christopher Otcasek (original surname spelling) had a band called Glamour Camp. They had a hit with "She Did It". Mostly forgotten now but a real banger. While "Drive" is a nice song, and their biggest chart hit, it's actually fairly atypical of Cars music, which generally tends to be a lot more upbeat. Most of the other songs people are suggesting are more indicative of what you would expect of a Cars song. In particular, "You Might Think" is very fun video.

One of my favs, too. I've often wished that I could have heard it in an outdoor, night concert. Something about the synthesizer, especially starting at about 2:10. I saw Ben in a small-venue concert with his own band in the late nineties, but I don't think he did this song.

Did You know alot of the cars songs are in alot of movies, tv shows, and animations? Transformers (2007) movie has the song drive in it playing on the radio in the bumblebee car. Also Your Place or Mine (2023) Movie with Ashton Kutcher and Reese Witherspoon has the song Drive. Ashton Kutcher likes the cars band alot so the movie has the songs let's go, bye bye love, good times roll, magic, just what I needed, shake it up, heartbeat city, You're all I got tonight, You might think. Some Adam Sandler movies have The Cars in the movies too like the Wedding Singer (1998), Mr Deeds(2002) and Click(2006). Episodes of Glee, American Dad and Family Guy.

Probably the most memorable movie with the Cars on the soundtrack was Fast Times at Ridgmont High. Especially as it was further immortalized in another song.

The ended because the guy singing this song, Benjamin Orr, died after this tour ended. They did put out one more album without him but I believe it sold poorly so they broke up.

Going to high school in early 80's, Car's were the band on MTV daily, all songs seem to make you think What??, while were popular to dance too, or just rock out! Plus, they had some of the most beautiful girls in their videos.

Pronounced okay-sek. This is a fantastic band! So many great songs so many vybz. They were true pioneers and every song touches you in some way. This particular song is definitely about having a breakdown and the need for help. Check out My Best Friend's Girlfriend, Let the Good Times Roll and Candy-O. RIP Ben Orr who injected so much pathos and smooth vocals to the songs.

Being a child of the 80s, I know the song well. It's memorable for me much more recently because I heard it on the radio after I had my Mother evaluated for dementia. The lyrics are very apt, because I had to bail her out of several situations that she had gotten herself into. This was six years ago. She passed this March. Make sure you tell your loved ones you love them often, because there might come a time when they won't remember it.

I can listen to this song on repeat, because it's gorgeous. I can also listen to this song endlessly, because I know the girl he's singing about, and many of us do. The hot mess who you think your love can save. Maybe the song is even introspective. What a departure from the Cars regular content, though, and what a masterpiece.

Paulina Porizkova was a world famous model when she hooked up with Ric Ocasek. They spent years together, but when he died he left her out of his will, leaving her broke and embittered. Sorry I can't think of this band w/o remembering that story...

Call me biased, because I grew up in the Boston area, but The Cars made one of the greatest debut albums with their self-titled The Cars. Every track is great and has a special meaning. Their follow-up, Candy-O, had WAY too much to live up to because of how good and popular their first album was. Candy-O stands well on its own and together The Cars first two albums are a master class in New Wave synth pop.

I vaguely recall a local (Baltimore-his hometown) classic rock station playing a significant number of the Cars songs when Ric passed in 2019. They were one of the 80s bands that dominated MTV way back when, with the likes of Huey Lewis & the News, Menudo, Spandau Ballet, etc. That was a fun stop on Diane's Musical Motorcade. Soft rock is impressive romance music. The music variety is off the chart from each song, where hard rock is fairly predictable as far as style, instrument usage, beat, even vocals, but soft rock is like a box of mixed chocolates, you never know what you're going to get. Good song choice. Keep'em coming. Everything She Does Is Magic, by the Police is another good choice.

Paulina was maybe the most beautiful woman in the world then. A couple of years ago, she was complaining because men pay less attention to her now (she sees that they are more attracted to young women). Fun fact: Ric was 20 years older than Paulina. Maybe she should have told him to go find a woman his own age.

Last names are weird sometimes and I can't understand why people don't change them more often. At my last job there was a guy working in our warehouse who had the last name Loser. No frame of reference? This is where I find millenials to be maddening. Did you never listen to music in the car? Or own a radio? The Cars have more recognizable songs than most bands, at least 20. That they weren't inducted in the R&R Hall of Fame until 2018 was critical.

The Cars released their debut album in the late 70s, and were a combination of rock and new wave. They had nearly 20 hit singles from the late 70s into the early 90s, with their biggest album, Heartbeat City, spinning off a number of singles that were also made into iconic and hugely popular videos on MTV. These videos used a variety of then-new computerized techniques and were ground-breaking at the time. My favorite of those hits and videos was Magic, but all of the songs from that album featured Ric Ocasek's future third wife, model Paulina Porizkova - she'd been hired for the first video when Ric was still married to his second wife, who he divorced in 1989, marrying Paulina soon after. My very favorite Cars song is Let's Go, from their second album Candy-O. It's full of joy and energy and is a perfect driving, sing-along song - though to be fair, that's true of most of their music.

The Cars and so many other 80's band are used as background in even movies and TV. You've probably heard it thousands of times without realizing it. The cars made some of the most beautiful music of the 80's. Another top caliber immortal 80's band. There are a near uncountable nubmer of the immortals: INX, Tears for Fears, Billy Idol, The Cure, ELO, OMD, Lover Boy, The Cure, The Police, Van Halen, Genesis, Foreigner, The Fix, Squeeze, .38 Special, The Psychedelic Furs, A Flock of Seagulls, Duran Duran, Men at Work, Adam Ant, XTC, The Tubes, Blondie, Devo, Talking Heads, The Vapors, The Human League, Oingo Boingo, Bow Wow Wow.... doesn't even scratch the surface....
