Ben was so private that, aside from basics, we know very little about his youth, adolesence, military life - any era of his life. He wanted it that way and everyone respected Ben, so everyone respected this wish. He never boasted, a very humble, private man. Even Joe Milliken, WHO INTERVIEWED EVERY PERSON WHO KNEW BEN, never had a bad word to write about Ben. Joe, a man who wrote and published a BOOK about Ben, respected Ben's wish on his privacy, even with Ben being dead. Think of Ben Jr, who lost his only sibling and his beloved father, who at the tender age of 5, adored his dad. imagine being 5 and told, you'll never see dad again. His confusion, his loss, his longing, watching other kids with their dads. Now imagine a fan -a stan- so obsessed about Ben, she travels the country worshipping him, even though he was dead, no chance of meeting him. This person then put stories so horrible about Ben out into the universe for his son to see. Stories from a bitter, unsuccessful man, Jim. Now Jim gets to shape Ben's legacy, thanks to "sweet" purple June. After 20 yrs being dead, she still chose to publish dirty tales exaggerated by a bitter man who was left behind in the 70s, and SPJ believed all. She imagines one day meeting Ben, I bet. And he will pass right by her, hating her, because she demolished his reputation. Even Ric, who Ben fell out with, never did that to Ben!

Great show. I’m so glad I found a decent show from the panorama tour. I rate Panorama their 2nd best studio effort, just behind the first album and just ahead of Candy-O. And I have been real keen to hear some of it live especially the title track which they play here. So thanks for posting this! And it is a real hoot reading all the comments from ladies swooning over Ben. I’m a straight guy but I must admit he is a pretty dashing looking character. Oh shit, story time. Almost forgot this. Believe it or not scouts honor hand on the Bible I know a girl, I’ll call her Michelle, because that is her name, who was like a sophomore/junior in high school in high school in 1979-80 when she went to a bowling alley and the cars are in town they’re at the bowling alley. She’s cute with her friends. The cars invite them over they bowl with the cars. The beer is flowing. Having a great time. Ben is acting goofy, flirting with my friend. He invites my friend to his hotel room where they’re staying for some fun. And of course she says…NO! I know I couldn’t believe it either cause she’s a huge cars fan but she was kind of young and prudish or naïve back then and just wasn’t gonna give it up, not even to Ben. So yeah “she told him no, she told him…NO”! Ha ha! Who knows? Maybe she was the inspiration for the song “don’t tell me no”. Drivers
Shit, I was a Sophomore/Junior in the early 80’s too. Your friend was so lucky. In all truth though I probably would have done exactly what she did though. Different story once I turned 18 though.

Sitting here listening to this and thinking I could have been at this concert! I was actually on my way back to Madison from Milwaukee on a Badger bus to start my freshman year at UW. I was a huge fan of The Cars having bought the first two albums in 78 and 79 respectively. My one regret was to never have seen them live. But I now have RU-vid and all of the amazing uploads provided by Donna to ease the sting of that unfortunate youthful mistake. Wish I'd known back then how great they were in concert, especially Ben Orr. His voice, musicianship, and unbelievably cool rock star presence at the center of the stage just locked that band in. The Cars "Tour on the Road." Labor Day 1980! Motels opened. I wish it would have been on Sunday night instead of Monday night. Still have my t-shirt in the attic!
I miss these guys so much the very last time I aw been alive he was over at Dereks house when they started the band "Big People" He wanted to go out rocking and he sure did till the very end!!!
A question from a thought that recently came to me. Enter the early 90's and MTV's last stand - the unplugged erea. A huge missed opportunity for both MTV and The Cars. The MTV's video Award 1st ever Video of the year Winners The Cars - regrouping for a live unplugged or as I would have released it as The Cars Unleaded. Imagine the rethought of all the song opportunities with Acostic and no over the top synthesizers. Greg is a master of many instruments, and the possibilities is limitless. Think of what this did for Kiss. Both MTV and The Cars dropped the ball on what could have been a awesome event, Video and music release. I know I would have bought the product.
Nice that Good Times Roll wasnt the opening choice. That song is such a hard backing vocal song - you need a in your face opening. Lets Go Would be a better choice until Hello Again.
