First, I have to thank Donna for posting this. I loved this band from the moment they hit the airwaves. Benjamin has been gone 23 years today. there will never be another like him now or ever. They broke the mold when they made that amazing man. I was reading a bunch of these comments and I want to thank everyone who keeps our beautiful Benjamin and his legacy alive. It’s mind blowing thousands of comments Benjamin and the cars still get.He was SUCH a special person. We are all blessed to have him in our lives then and now. Love and miss you sweet angel.💜❤️🔥💔❣️
Such an incredible Band! Ben and Rick will be missed but definitely left such a legacy. They were my Beatles. They were my growing memories. They captured and showed how to do it. With using piano/organ/synthesizer, guitar, drums, horns, base. Hmm.. I see it now with some jam bands. Y’all check out Goose( out of Connecticut )music isn’t dead. There just not on mainstream. And I don’t want them to be. It’s already tuff enough to get tics. But they have a great vocal sharing like Ric and Ben. This is GOLD!!!!
The Cars are arguably the greatest rock band of the 70s - 80s . Pretty much covered my school years. Im 62 now.. but im 17 again when i watch this here video
They sounded great. Saw them in 1987 on the Door to Door tour. They didn't move around much and didn't talk to the audience which I thought was odd at the time but apparently that's how they were.
@@JTRocks4Ever Yeah, I saw them in Denver on the Heartbeat City tour (1984) and it was the same. The music was really, really good - just awesome -- but talking to the crowd was just something they weren't interested in doing. I thing Ric said 3 things all show -- "Hello" and "Goodbye" plus a solitary "Great crowd" halfway through.
Let's really let it sink in: this is 78 too. I mean if it was 80/84 onwards etc it wouldn't look out of place but this looks fully amazing and time moved so differently/slow back then! Doesn't look old at ALL.
OH!! I've read about a gig where they had stuff being thrown at them and Ben almost getting hit by a bottle. But didn't realise it was THIS one, even though I've watched this a few times and wondered what Benjamin was saying and who he was talking to. Now I gotta go back and watch again :-)
Time stamp of bottle is 19:25@@johnmcaleese8459 then at 19:37 he steps back from microphone and mouths "I'm gonna get you". Helps to slow video speed to see something fly past him. This explains why I thought he was looking even more intense and focused tha usual.
@@gracewolf16Thanks. I slowed it by 50%. I didn't see the bottle but I did see him saying ""I'm going to get you ". At that age, I believe Ben could have handled himself quite well !! Who the hell would do that to such a great part of Rock history. What a voice.
No other band in the world sounds like The Cars! You can tell it’s them from the very first notes, so unique with interesting lyrics......”Brush your rock & roll hair”, freaking genius!! Nobody writes songs like this anymore! Ben Orr is a talented, gorgeous and underrated rock god!
You're right. Their sound and lyrics were great. "With your eyes of porcelain and of blue, they shock me into sense." - Bye Bye Love. I love this band and listen to them quite often. Candy-O is my personal fave.
I remember as a teen they used to do a comparison to the doors in voting format so apparently at least the station saw some similarities. Other than keyboards I didn’t see much comparison other than both having a great sound
That saxophone on 'All mixed up" kicks ass too. Love that tune & Greg added a lot to the sound of the band with the keys & Sax. Elliot E is another favorites. Cheers!
The Cars were phenomenal! Ben was great, Ric was they all were. But Elliot Easton's guitar solos were amazing! And how tight were they live!!! Such an incredible band.
When you think of it, the Cars came out the same year that Van Halen did, and Elliot would have gotten a lot more recognition and credit if Eddie Van Halen hadn't been as brilliant as he was. Factor in other dominant guitarists and huge bands of the late 70s, like Alex Lifeson and Neal Schon (Rush and Journey). There was just such an overload of talent and good music in that era.
New Wave, punk, rockabilly, pop rock whatever . These guys were so unique & original . Their first 2 LPS were masterpieces. I'm so glad I grew up in the 70s & 80s wen music was real & exciting. Not like now.
There will never ever be a band like this - ever ever again. They made a mark in the world that will forever be etched. And, please, don’t use the word underrated - if they were, we wouldn’t be here resounding with comments.
Yes, but compare his appearance to his performance during the "Live Aid" concert. There he looked very healthy, vibrant, and well-rested. But in the above video, he looks very tired, as if he has not gotten enough sleep. His eyes are dark. But during the live aid performance, he looked like he was at the top of his health. Does anybody disagree with me? It's just a personal observation and no ill intent is meant here.
Saw The Cars at a club in SF in the late 70s and then out on tour. Ben Orr was a huge talent… so cool, a gifted vocalist, and a genuinely nice guy. Rest peacefully, Ben and Ric.
Greg amazes me. Extremely talented. Ben had long eyelashes a woman wound envy.❤❤😊😊. Him and Ric are sorely missed😢😢😢😢. Ben's bass guitars matches his outfit😂😂😅😅.
@@cliveedwards2958 many don’t know, but he was a graduate of Berklee. I was born in the 90s so the Cars were way before my time, but one reason I admire them so much is how incredibly talented each member is. Ric and Ben are both great singers and own each song they sing. Those basslines Ben is playing are not simply root notes on the kick, he’s flying around the neck. Greg’s work on the keys is really the heart and soul of their overall sound. Elliot Easton’s guitar is the balls of the Cars. Precise, in your face, raw rock ‘n roll Les Paul tone.
I’ve got a lot of Respect for a band like the Cars. Each member compliments the other members musically. Very Talented Musicians that Deserve more credit.
Such a talented tight band the live versions sound like the studio version and that's difficult to do. I saw them in 1979, spent my paper route money to go, great memory of a lifetime.
You said it I remember all of it , the talent we had back then not only on the instruments but in the song writing, you never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory!!!! Those were the best times!!!!!!
Someone said in another post that All Mixed Up is one of the best songs ever written. I couldn’t agree more. And you couldn’t have a better vocalist than Benjamin singing it. I have to add Drive in there too. And Bye Love.
@@julenepegher6999 He was the photogs dream subject. So photogenic. And he exuded an uncontrived sensual, HOT allure. Oh. Benjamin. You were SO LOVED! Still are.
One of the greatest live bands ever to tour. They're better live and sound like the record. And nobody sounds like them. Great musicians all around, the best of the bunch in their era.
This audience should be ashamed of the lack of interest and applause towards one of the best bands ever. The Cars were just brilliant. Rest in peace lovely Benjamin and Ric.
Want to know whats better than kicking the guys ass who threw an object @ ben during bye bye love? Ben singing and staring you down the whole time mouthing "I'm going to get you"WANTING too kick your ass, but is classy about it and channels all of that anger into his best performance of bye bye love ever!
Elliot Easton is so effin cool because of how much of himself he gives his performance. When the lead breaks come for Bye Bye Love he confronts the audience with a cocky rock n roll bravado that is irresistible, stepping out front, holding up his guitar as he plays his spirited licks asking the audience 'What do you think of that? Is that good enough for ya? Is it enough for your teenage love?' There's a certain machismo about him that makes you smile and excites you. Its deeply satisfying to watch because he delivers the goods. He's the real deal. And when you see him reach down with lighting speed to turn up or down a tone or volume knob in the space of a millisecond you see how attuned to the music he is. He gives himself to it. And that's all any of us wants to see: authenticity. Someone playing it how they feel it. Long live Elliot Easton.
@@kittensanddaisies5615- The Cars did a kick ass job here & that audience sucked! . Especially after some jerk decided to throw something @ them. What a treat this performance is though. Cheers!
REST IN PEACE RIC ❤❤ 0:00 Just What I Needed 2:30 Introduction 3:04 Good Times Roll 6:36 My Best Friend’s Girl 10:35 All Mixed Up 15:02 Night Spots 18:52 Bye Bye Love 23:07 Don’t Cha Stop 26:36 You’re All I’ve Got Tonight
@@ellab8897Ben was so incredibly gorgeous 😍 with a rockstar body & voice. He had a beautiful angelic voice, as well. He was extremely humble & so professional even after the fools in the crowd were being rude & throwing stuff at him/the band. RIP Ben Orr 😢 & Ric you both will never be forgotten.
7 years since it posted but I'm still gonna comment. 🤷♀️ There were a few a--holes in the crowd yelling disrupting, derogatory calls like "so and so's a poofter" and such, not realizing they were witnessing music history in the making. I'm glad that later in the set somebody yelled to those few, "SHUT UP YOU BAHSARDS!" Such a pity that I never saw them (and many other bands I love) perform a live show. Sigh. Quite grateful for recordings like these.
I love him too. He was the "underdog" as far as the other guys because he didn't have a girlfriend @ that time . He said it was a rough time for him. I just read that random fact. He is a great guitarist. Cheers!
The thing that makes Benjamin fantastic & often underrated as just a pretty boy with good vocals is his ability to sing lead vocals brilliantly and play bass. I've read & friends in bands have told me that it is extremely challenging to do both because the bassist has to listen for the drum kicks & bassline of the drums which often has it's own type of melody. He seems to have no issue with it ...does it as easily as chewing gum & to top it off he can play lead guitar, keyboards, drums as well. Electric Angel Rock and Roller...
It is a challenge to sing and play bass! I took lessons, learned some of the Cars songs, but I would forget a line or something sometimes, lol. I love Ben & the Cars much! Each of the guys have amazing talent!!
Great comment. It is indeed difficult to play bass and sing...I do it. I think he's sexy (I have a man crush)...that doesn't hurt either :) RIP Benjamin...
@@danielliddle3280 ooohhh my gosh....what an incredible live show they put on!!!!! I was on North Carolina I think it might have been...1991 or 1992 i saw them in Raleigh! Incredible!!
This is my favortie band of all times and i grew up in the 70s and 80s with the best music. But they were so unique and just had an instant loving of them Havent changed my mine for over 40 some years .. I miss these guys!
This concert is simply brilliant, instrumentally, the vocals, doing all their original material. Certainly one of the most underrated great bands ever.
@@julenepegher6999 frankly, i have to remove myself from watching The Cars for weeks at a time. Otherwise I become captivated and re-immersed into a world of the past, where now two of those guys are angels. Benjamin was the most perfectly beautiful, cool, alluring and vocally amazing musician I have ever seen. ~such a rare human
moodylicious Yes, it’s really addicting but one of my simple pleasures. I get caught in the past also. The Cars were such a huge part of my life so many memories attached to certain songs. “God it’s such a drag when you’re living in the past” that’s Tom Petty, (Even the Losers). Your description of Ben is perfect. All I can think is he’s reaping rewards in Heaven. And I have to say I do love Ric, David, Elliot and Greg but Ben was just extra special.
I have a renewed appreciation for The Cars. They really are all so amazingly talented. What a great live performance. Greg Hawkes was phenomenal at 13:52 with his sax (sorry if I'm wrong, don't know my wind instruments) solo. Absolutely amazing. Too bad the sound engineering failed on his keyboard solo at 21:00. Again, just a brilliant performance by each band member.
This is one of my favorite videos of The Cars. They power through the jealousy and hate from some twit Brits like the pros they were! Ben's heavy baseline ;) and Ric's lyrics.
My cousin Angela RIP saw them in Upper Darby PA before they went to Europe. When they hit, it was like a left hook. So much talent among the whole group. Elliot is a frigging beast! One of the greatest bands from the late 1970's. My God we had The Cars, Foreigner, Kansas, Jethro Tull, Aerosmith, Boston, it just keeps going and going. I can tell you this, it'll never happen again. The 10 year period of 1968 to 1978 was just so fucking awesome! I was in High School when this video was made. RIP Ben and Ric! Thanks for all the great music.
The Cars give the term "New Wave" a good name. Very smart, sleek and modern rock with great songwriting and playing (and a pretty good look too especially that pretty Ben Orr RIP).
The only OTHER group I know of that pulled that off was AC/DC after Bon "accidentally" died in that car unbenounced to the Young brothers!!😡 I my self never believed it was an accident😞😕
Well, the Beatles has two. Fleetwood Mac…. The Band… definitely the Eagles. It was uncommon however look at those groups. They great! How about groups that had one lead singer then another like Genesis… or as said here… AC/DC! About Cars.. Ric Ocasek - genius.
This is why I was BIG fan from the late 70's and 80's while in High School and College / Surfing / racing my muscle car. A time when the bands played for the Fans and everyone enjoyed the music. OH YEA !
I was 21 when this was happening. This album changed the world for me when it came out. I played it everyday on my way from gunnison colorado, driving up to ski Crested Butte, all day long with a season ski pass, and I'd work at the three thieves steak house in crested butte every night. I thought I would wear that tape out, but it just kept on going. Then candy-o came out and that marked a whole new era in my life. But both albums were all time classics, because it was like both albums were perfectly engineered to listen to all the way through. And each song fed into the next as one whole masterpiece. Two of the greatest albums of all time, hands down, second to almost none.
Very talented musicians, all of them. One thing that doesn’t get mentioned is how good a rhythm guitarist Ric Ocasek was. His parts were relatively simple but his timing, strumming and muting skills were spot on. I love all of Elliot’s playing but Ric accounted for an important ingredient in the band’s overall sound.
I'm an old man now, but I saw the Cars during this tour. It was in a small theater in Pittsburgh, PA. called the Stanley Theater. The opening act was Patty Smyth and Scandal. Whom I had never heard of at the time. Ric was even wearing the same clothes and aviator sunglasses on stage. As far as I can remember they played the same song list in this order.
Very cool! I’ve loved The Cars my whole life, but I wasn’t born until 1979. I was just a small child when they officially disbanded, so I never got the privilege of seeing them perform live other than via MTV, VH1, RU-vid, etc. I still love them so much to this very day! 🌹
Happy you were able to see them! I saw them in ‘79 @ Arrowhead Stadium in KC. My 20 year old mind was blown. Can still picture, feel the vibe and energy. We were at the right time and place, peace.
I love seeing bands in their prime, and being able to show my kids the music I grew up listening to. Best part of RU-vid. This was a great show from a great band- thank you for posting. Man these guys were tight.
@@reesedaniel5835 yes about the ok boomer thing. I also see a ton of “look kids, this is how it’s done or saying they’ll never enjoy great music like we did!” It’s off putting, lots of younger generations are watching these vids too.
The entire show is great...but there are standouts...Night Spots, Bye Bye Love, and You're All I've Got Tonight jam. All mixed up is extraordinary. What a gem to have this early performance. Thanks, for posting.
It’s unbelievable, that at the end, even though Ben was gone.A band that should have sold out the biggest stadiums in the country were playing the little bitty Electric Factory in Philly. What a band. A one of a kind. All original never copied.
Electrifying performances!!!! Loved Benjamin with all of my heart He's so gorgeous!!! Groovey red pants!!!! Beautiful voice bad ass at bass!!!! Loveeeee loveeeee loved this band!!!! I'm crying I miss Benjamin so much RIP And Ric
I wasn't into the Cars at the time, more of a metal head than anything else, LOL. I have to say though that THIS, is how I like to see my favorite bands. Early in their careers, live, and stripped down to the bare bones like any respectful garage band should be. THAT'S, where you see the talent that deserves the fame that's coming.
RIP Ben and Rick one of my favorite old school band's, growing up in the 80s was so great having bands like the Car's, so many memories, thank you guys for all the great kick azz music you gave us 🎵🎶 you all will never be forgotten, your music 🎵🎶 will live on.
One of the greatest live bands ever to tour. They're better live and sound like the record. And nobody sounds like them. Great musicians all around, the best of the bunch in their era.😊
Such a charismatic band......from a time when beards, shortpants , sneakers and baseball caps weren't yet the norm. Ben Or was a fascinating performer ; they all were, but he was very special. Ironic that during his last year on this planet he regained his cool looks.
Never did see these guys in concert. This provides an opportunity to see what I missed. Great stuff! That whole first album (and second) were amazing. Still listen to them all the time. Thanks for the upload!
How come there's no more new bands like this one? Joe Eliot was writing and singing songs when when he was 20 years old! There was a lot of excelent rock and roll bands, I miss my youth!
