I always loved the chili scene, but never really found it funny - to me what works about the scene is the unfortunate relatability of Kevin’s devastation. We’ve all made borderline unfixable, day-ruining mistakes, and are filled with emptiness, hopelessness, and regret. For me, the way Kevin reacts after spilling the chili is not too dissimilar to when a file crashes that I forgot to save for the past couple hours. That “no no no please no” feeling, the panic when trying to fix it, and the realization that this thing you’ve worked so hard on has now become an additional burden is actually one of Kevin’s most human moments of the series. It’s not laugh-out-loud funny, but for me, it elicits some kind of deep empathetic response despite the incredible silliness of the whole thing. As always, great video and analysis! Always a treat when I see a new post in my sub box!
This video came up on auto-play but it instantly felt like a video that was really well made and i watched the whole thing. Good editing, audio and some great points. After the video ended and i was going to find another i noticed that it was just recently uploaded and the channel had didnt have “many” subscribers which made me really confused. The video was so good that i just assumed it was an old popular video from a “big” channel. Anyway, you just earned a subscriber and i am really excited to see more of your stuff man, keep it up
I think the opening sequence was also cartoonified. The original one made me laugh because it played some music over ordinary things: a printer printing, an office worker office working. Later, they replaced it with the characters running, jumping and having fun in the office. WTF? You are not supposed to have fun in The Office! You are supposed to have a printer printing! Even though I was not the greatest fan of the show in the first place, I felt so betrayed when they changed it.
Micheal Dwight and Jim have been outlandish since the beginning. In seasons 8 & 9 every character has flanderization done to them. It's fair to criticize the show for that reason, but it's not exactly over rated because most fans of the show don't care for the last 2 seasons.
I think that liking Kevin’s chili scene isn’t evidence of liking the later or earlier seasons. Physical comedy is really rare in the show as a whole and happens just as much in the earlier seasons (melon on trampoline, basketball game, Dwight crashing his car and getting a concussion). I agree that Kevin becomes increasingly unbelievable with how stupid he is, but the chili scene is still very believable and therefore funny to me within the original premise of the office. I think they went too far with physical comedy when Dwight takes that bicycle on the tight rope for example. I think if you find THAT funny it is better evidence of liking the earlier or later seasons because that is actually “cartoonish”. Just my take on it. Great video overall!
A great and very well grounded explanation as to exactly why the office starts so well, and then gets *so* bad. There's not a lot of good faith criticism towards this show on RU-vid--loved this video
I’m with you for the most part. I enjoy the show a lot all the way through, especially while Michael’s is still a character, but it definitely was at its best in seasons 2 and 3 with more grounded concepts. For me, the humor there definitely hits harder. Just my preference though!
whole heartedly agree that the later seasons of The Office were a bit much (still fun, but a far from what it originally was). but also I have to say that Cartoonification can work for some shows. off the cuff I'd say Parks and Rec is pretty Cartoonified (?) and share a similar vibe with The Office but they pull it off and I love that show. anyway, great video! would love to see more of this
Amazing i really love your channel and I have been following you for a long time especially the videos of HIMYM I enjoyed it a lot, thank you for your hard work and effort, Unfortunately you did not receive the result you deserve but even if you do not receive a lot of views and likes, I want you to know that there are people who appreciate your efforts in your videos very much ❤
I really enjoyed the show until somewhere in season 4, for me the cartoonification and distortion of many characters really started in season 5. In the first seasons, characters were relatable, in the later seasons it was over-the-top american humour and I hated it, I stopped watching at season 7 I think, never watched the last two seasons. I think I'm just more receptive to British humour.
