The Case for Soil Blocks in the Market Garden

Are soil block worth it on a commercial scale? Are soil blocks slower than cell trays? Why don't more growers use them? These are the types of questions I tackle in today's video making the case for soil blocks on a commercial scale.
Making soil blocks can be slow, it can be tedious, but there are other benefits that possibly outweigh those difficulties and there are also tools that help speed it up, making it a viable option for the market garden. if you're wondering how to start plants from seed--I present you this video.

For the drudgery of seeding them : This may not apply to a market garden level...but who knows, so... I often combine starting seeds, w sitting in a comfy chair ( whatever works for still leaning forward some etc. ) w Tv or Y.T on even, in the evening ( I don't have kids & hubby works late). I have a table by chair, other surfaces pulled up as needed, fill some trays then bring inside to sit n seed awhile.

These are all great tips, that I figured out with much frustration. An additive I found to be effective is shredded newspaper. You can add 25% paper to the soil mix and it acts like re-bar in concrete. I haven't done formal recipes, so the most effective proportions of soil to paper may be different, depending on the story lines you use.

I find it really helps to wet the soil mixture (confess to using ProMix peat-based mix--amended with compost and a few other things) at least 24 hours in advance. I wet most of the way, cover with an old bag from past soil mix, and then re-adjust the day I use it. I use a hand-blocker since I'm just a home gardener with a lot of friends begging for seedlings, and toss aside any larger twigs as I go. I do find the seeding indent makes for efficient covering--or often no need to cover (great for lettuce, since it often needs light to germinate and it's in a little depression but not covered). A bit frustrated that the 4-across blocker wastes too much space and squeezing in a 5th is a pain and too tight. After trying to make my own blocker once, I will buy 'em!

Back in 1989 my dad bought the original soil block maker they only had 2 sizes then, a large and smaller size. They came with a recipe to make the soil. I learned how to make the soil blocks I loved it and had a ball making them. I ALWAYS wanted a set for myself but haven't ever bought them. I may have to try to get a set. The one you are using looks like it would be a lot faster to make them than the four cubes at a time. Because it was time consuming to make the soil blocks.

Used soil blocks for the first time this season, with Coleman's recommended soil mix. Our tomato seedlings are going ape. I didn't find any increase in germination rate or decrease in germination time, but I did find that the seedlings that have come up so far are going crazy. (Probably the seed mix, as opposed to the usual sterile peat most recommended.) It is a royal pain to seed them, but the seedling quality I find makes it worth the extra effort.

It seems the paperpot.co guys invented a drop seeder that can take any spacing. They have started making custom plates, so I assume that means if you told them "my soil blocks are 1 inch apart in a grid 10 by 50" or whatever, that they could easily fabricate that plate. Just remember low and slow when drilling through the Lexan/Plexiglass, whichever you decided to do and lay them on a scrap piece of wood. you forgot the nesting nature of soil blocks. i can start 300 seeds in 3/4x3/4 blocks on a small heat mat. From that i can transplant only the best seedlings. From then on its not to hard to keep plants alive. With cell trays overcrowding becomes an issue with vigorous plants which is what we want. A chefs spatula can quickly move even 4" blocks a little bit apart in soil block tray with out damaging the roots.

@notillgrowers
@notillgrowers 4 года назад
Good questioa! So we have done the minis but I don't think it's worth it. We prefer to just skip that step and go straight into 2" blocks. For tomatoes four instance we'll sow a couple extra seeds in every tray so if there are any misses we just pull the extra plant out and transplant it into the empty blocks. Saves a step.

@rnupnorthbrrrsm6123

I’m not positive but I think it’s your moisture level, either to wet or to dry. It took me a few times to figure out what the mix should feel like and also make sure you are packing it tight. Scoot out he mix to the edge of your pan so it’s deep, then plunge down on a big pile of deep mix, it helps pack enough in there without having to make several small plunges to fill the blocker. Good luck, don’t give up, just play with it a bit until you get the hang of it 😍

@@rnupnorthbrrrsm6123 Quite funny how techniques differ. I found that I need a thin bed of substrate so I can squeeze it into the mould against the bottom of the container. Trials continue however, now that I can make nice blocks I manage to 1) wash / float out the seed while watering and 2) get germination and the seedlings then just ... freeze, neither failing nor actually growing beyond cotyledons. I suspect anaerobic conditions or lack of watering. And yes, I know those are kinda contradictory :D

@twitwicki1
@twitwicki1 2 года назад
Wouldn't recommend it because the blocks will dry out. The moisture content of a fresh made block is ideal for germination or a seedling.

Do you think you’d have more success growing carrot transplants in soil blocks than cell trays.. less potential for root damage?
@notillgrowers
@notillgrowers 4 года назад
Well, I cant say from personal experience but most growers say carrots cannot be transplanted (save for paperpot but even then I'm skeptical). Could try it but I worry about root damage making it not worth the work. Who knows tho!

@@notillgrowers Well, we shall see.... ! I never woulda dreamed of starting carrots, but seeing all u market growers starting so much, incl. Richard perkins doing carrots in his paper pots I think, inspired me.. . I started some in taller-ish plastic drinking cups this spring, in a hurry to get some going, but waiting on place to ultimately put them ( in apartment, sharing a friend's garden, long story) . Ended up w em in some pots/pails. other than the compost from a neighbors horse yard being more sandy than I realized, and they kept drying out & now w all this rain, staying too wet, they been looking good. Let ya know ! BTW< u look super tired, like me when I during some very gruelling yrs on my folks dairy farm. Get some more sleep somehow, as I suspect you're not in your 20s, either ! Drink extra nourishing broth too maybe. God bless & stay funny !

Would soil block transplants be something that would be good to sell at a farmers market?
@notillgrowers
@notillgrowers 4 года назад
Yes and no. We’ve done larger soil blocks and wrapped them in burlap. But that’s a lot of work. I think you could also transplant them into pots and sell the that way but I’m not sure it would be more worth it than just growing them in pots? Good question though!

@@notillgrowers I'm wondering if you could premake the bags and reuse them yeah plastic waste is no good. And I'm not a big fan of plastic recycling either. All the plastification can't good for the Earth either. But that being said I don't think that we shouldn't be doing anything with petroleum all together it can be pretty useful in chemical applications. Like making ammonia and nitrogen-based fertilizers. Like for example a chemical based fertilizer such as Monoammonium phosphate will have a cleaner NPK(12-52-0) and will not contain any potassium. Which is good if you have too much which in some cases potassium interfere with the uptake of other cations. Both ammonium and dihydrogen orthophosphate ions exist in nature. Adding them to a acreage at levels to meet the needs of your crops and the soil organisms would be no different than adding an organic fertilizer as the plants take up the available nutrients. You won't go over on something that you already have too much of. If that proportion of nutrients is needed. The phosphate won't immediately bind to the soil. And it's pH in solution should effect the soil microorganisms. It all depends on circumstance and timing

I've used small fiber trays to hold soil block seedling for sale, but the trays I've found don't hold a full 6-pack of soli blocks and it's an extra step to put them in the fiber trays

Hey Jessie, are you still using soil blocks? Or winstrips?
@notillgrowers

Mostly blocks. I continue to prefer them. We use Winstrips for early tomatoes and peppers then late brassicas . Everything else in blocks

The time the plant stays in the block - too little, they fall apart - too much and the tray is a mat of roots.

Why can't you use egg carton and plant separately in egg carton cut up
@ajb.822
@ajb.822 4 года назад
Have u tried it ? Not meaning to be rude, truly ! Just that I have, it sucks, and that's just for lil old home garden, no way to make that work efficiently for a market grower. Very (!!) hard to cut up without spilling seedlings all over ( and to cut up prior to sowing...well, u try it), too shallow for most things, too small all around for many others. Maybe if have good greenhouse environment ( I did not) they would be easier to maintain decent moisture levels, but since I know people who can re-use egg cartons for their chickens, there's no waste is not doing this.

Part of the point of soil blocks is that the soil block on a mesh tray is surrounded by air, not paper or plastic, which allows the roots to air prune.
