Disclaimer: This Docuseries is created for educational purposes.
In Ireland, the Magdalene Laundries were at their 'busiest' during the 1900's following the formation of the free state. Girls and women were 'sent' there, sometimes for the rest of their lives, for everything and nothing. The last Magdalene Laundry closed it's doors to the public in 1996. This a story that can never be forgotten, and can never be allowed to happen again.

My mum, who I sadly barely remember,as she died of cancer when I was three, was born in a Magdalene laundry. I recently discovered she had three siblings, who apparently all died in childhood. My mother escaped the laundry in 1960. My mother doesn’t even have a birth certificate. Thank you for this documentary. The pure horror of this was hidden for so long and went unpunished. Thank you brave ladies for speaking out.

Your decision to start the video by addressing and offering your deepest admiration and respect to any/all survivors of the Magdalene Laundries exhibited kindness, compassion, and understanding of the highest caliber. I also couldn't help but shed a few tears when you stated "what happened to the survivors of the Magdalene Laundries should have NEVER happened nor should it EVER happen to ANY woman/any group of women." Please continue to do what you are doing and please know that your channel just earned a new subscriber! ❤️❤️❤️❤️

What people don’t seem to realise that these girls/ women were abused and made pregnant by someone in their family or neighbour from abuse/ rape but they were sent away and the man still roaming free to harm others angers me so much.

Correct Emma, in fact very few pregnant women were ever in the laundries. But a number were sent directly from the Mother and Baby homes. Many, many girls and women in the laundries had never been pregnant. It's amazing how they are still thought to have been full of prostitutes and unmarried mothers (they were in the previous century). The next episode goes through 'Routes of entry'... it certainly debunks that myth at least. Its still heartbreaking to go through though

These homes also existed in Australia. I have never recovered from the trauma, 17, pregnant, abandoned, sent there by my shamed parents. The admitting nun nearly fainted when I told her I wasnt baptised nor did I belong to a religion.I was then isolated from all the other girls, as if my paganism was contagious.I am writing about my experience as it robbed me of my happiness, nearly stole my son, made me a depressed, unpresent mother. I worked in the laundry..it was like a place in hell.Blessings to all survivors, karma got the cruel nuns.

I was at school with Irish Nuns, even as a young girl noticed something which now I can refer to as low self esteem. My sister and I were boarders, and we were called and told there was a parcel for us. Parcels were opened and inspected. We looked into the parcel and I said to my sister, "Why did mummy put the soap next to the sweets" at moment a nun swooped down on us, "What are you doing that parcel it is not yours" We walked away very embarrassed, we had both been told about the parcel, and we were actually blamed for a nuns mistake. It was insidents like that that even at that age There was something wrong with them.😢

I think they dug up bodies at Fred West's house and everyone was disgusted and horrified and the building was demolished but the magnitude of this is hundreds of times worse. There's no explanation for all those wee lives lost and forgotten other than abuse and cover up on a massive scale.

This is not unlike the unmarked graves of indigenous children who were taken from their parents and put in residential schools in Canada. I just witnessed a search for graves using special radar equipment a few weeks ago. As soon as I realized what they were doing, I retreated as this was a sacred act. Hundreds were found at various locations run by both Catholic and Anglican churches. An official apology came from the government and then from the pope last summer. A committee of indigenous leaders went to Rome to meet with him and tell their story. Part of the truth and reconciliation commission recommendations was financial restitution for survivors. It created inter generational trauma.

I know all about the Magdalene laundries. I was born to Irish mother and an English father in England. My mother's parents left Ireland for a better life in England. I was brought up Catholic. I'm not into religion and I believe in Odin and Valhalla as I have embraced my Danish ancestry who were Vikings. About five years ago I found out that I had an older sister. No wonder my mother went mad when I said that I wanted to trace my family tree!! It turns out that she fell pregnant by the lodger who was staying with my mother and her parents. In 1950s it was considered sinful to be a Catholic and an unmarried mother and so my sister was put up for adoption. Had my mother still been in Ireland then she would have ended up in the laundries.

In Cherbourg Aboriginal Reserve in Queensland Australia, the Industrial School was established in the late 1890s to train the surviving young Aboriginal girls and older women in domestic service, laundry, cooking, cleaning, sewing, dairy work, tending gardens, caring for farm animals even droving cattle and child minding; and at the age of 12 were contracted out to work in the homes, farms and stations of strangers to work at whatever was determined by the contracted employers and the state. This carried on into the 1980s. Other states had similar set ups. No thought was given to the safety of Aboriginal children females and males. Laundries were not the only and main form or work Aboriginal children and adults were forced to work in. Sexual abuse and assault of these children and older women was a common experience. Those girls who returned to the reserves pregnant to some white employer or other white male staff were punished not the white males who thought this was not their problem; hence the problem of lighter-skinned children that became an embarrasment to Australian governments. Now those men (or their children) are the ones questioning Aboriginal identity the loudest based on skin colour. Stories abound of this type of treatment and are now well recorded in personal accounts and to the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody and Removal of Aboriginal children. Aboriginal people can relate to the Irish experience. A lot of Irish and English children were sent to Australia during WWII to build up the Australian population. A good Australian/English movie but very sad is Oranges and Sunshine about some ow what happened to these children too. I don't know what to say to the women and children from Ireland who experienced such cruelty but Bless you all and know that you are the strong ones.

The power of the churches, I believe the anglican church did this as well, over its people would not be understood today, their ability to get away with ths and the states turning a blind eye, I hope, would not happen now. It is really important that people know about this so that we can learn from our mistakes.

It always amazed me that women who opted out of marriage and family life, would then run children’s homes and Laundries. I used to think as a young woman , that the Nuns were cruel because they didn’t want to be around babies and children. I am a Catholic brought up with and educated by Catholics. Most nuns were kind but there were a few who were absolutely cruel , it would never have been in my thought to complain or tell anyone what was happening , it was a sin to question a nun or priest it was a bigger sin to accuse them of abuse. No one dared complained because they knew no one would believe them and you would be punished for daring to accuse. Same in Scotland you do not question the Catholic Church, even priests and bishops who knew about cruelty denied it happened.

I remember watching a movie about this when i was a teenager. I was truly disgusting and disappointing how the church instead of helping these girls and babies they abused them. They blamed them instead of holding the young men involved responsible. All i can remember was a part on the movie where a young lady whom had mental issues who was repeatedly taken advantage of by the people in her life. No one believed she was being abused by a specific priests but one girl named Bridgette who decided to take matters into her own hands .She took poison ivy and put it in the priest laundry this was a sure fire way to catch him in the act.she did. The priest had a horrible rash but unfortunately so did the poor mental girl . Her mouth her lower parts as well was rashed up because of what the priest did. . Bridgette was found out and was punished horribly. All i could remember was the mental girl repeatedly telling him He's NOT A MAN OF GD .HES NOT A MAN OF GD. U til she was also beating nearly to death.

Hi, I've just subscribed after having one your other videos on this topic pop up as a suggestion (the algorithm is working!). Thanks for covering the Magdalene laundries. I remember a family friend, a lady, going through a tough time in the early 90s or so when she became pregnant outside marriage. She did 'disappear' for a bit (not like a missing person, but no one actually set eyes on her), and when she returned she had her wee baby. This was whispered to me, a young girl, as if it was a scandal. I had no concept of why it should be such. How sad that this was still the attitude so recently, and that there's still so much misogyny within Irish society. Appreciate your work here, thanks a million.

I find it amazing that the majority of young ladies didn’t seem to know this threat was looming over them, meaning they didn’t know they existed. That shows how ashamed and how little the young women were even open to talk about the experience to others. Where I live, growing up, we all knew the name of the troublesome girls home and the boys home in the state. We all knew that was a possibility. These young women were completely blindsided by the realities of their new lives. That blows my mind. Also means it wasn’t used as a scare tactic as much, I find that strange as well.

Most women that survived the laundries fled the country, understandably 😔. Those who didn't mostly never spoke about it, even later on to their spouses or children. The stigma was unbelievable. If you spent any time in a magdalene institution you were automatically considered an 'untouchable'. It's all extremely difficult to believe. Partly why it was allowed to continue...those who tried to tell were not believed. The whole thing is like a really bad dream, imagine how much worse for those who were incarcerated. We need to own what we did here, otherwise there's nothing to stop recurrence. Thank you very much for giving it your attention ❤️

I had no idea until I saw a drama about the Magdalene Laundries and I thought it could not be true at first until I found out it was indeed a true story - I had always thought all nuns were lovely good kind people as they are of course religious - I thought after, if that is Religion you can keep it! Where is mercy and kindness from these nuns, why were they so cruel? I don’t understand why.

Its also well past time that legislation allowing all churches tax free status along with many other legislative benefits most of us may not be aware of be revoked. They have been allowed to become too powerful, too rich, too autonomous, given too much authority to do as they please and to hoard the money for who knows what.. while parishioners are their slave labour more often than not living in poverty or close to it.

My catholic nan was born in Lambeth, London in 1891 and orphaned in 1901. On the 1901 census she is in Norwood Convent and orphanage and was a scholar. On the 1911 census she is in a Good Shepherd institution in London, occupation - a washerwoman. It broke my heart to realise this could be a Magdalen Laundry. My nan hinted to my aunt that something bad happened at a turkey farm she was working on in her late teens and the farmers son was locked into a room until she left. Was she raped? I can't find anything online to explain it and it haunts me.
