Private Detective Martin Hewitt is consulted by an engineer who has fallen victim to an impossible theft: important naval blueprints have gone missing from his suite of offices, although nobody has entered or left the office since the drawings were last seen... Where have the plans gone, and can Hewitt recover them before they fall into the hands of enemy agents?

00:00:00 Introduction
00:01:18 The Case of the Dixon Torpedo
00:52:00 Credits, thanks and further listening
Arthur Morrison (1863-1945) was a journalist and author who made his name with realistic portrayals of English working class life in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, typified by his most famous novel, 'A Child of the Jago' (1896). In addition, he composed numerous short stories for periodical publication between 1891 and 1913, with themes ranging from horror and the supernatural to detective tales. In the latter genre he created two popular contemporary "rivals of Sherlock Holmes", Martin Hewitt and Horace Dorrington.
Morrison was born in Poplar, in the east end of London, into a working class family. His father, a dock worker, died of tuberculosis when Arthur was eight. He began his career as an office boy at the London School Board and gradually worked his way up through the ranks of various publications, first as a clerk and eventually as a journalist and editor. He married Elizabeth Thatcher in 1892, and their son Guy was born the following year.
Morrison's detective character Martin Hewitt first appeared in The Strand Magazine just weeks after Conan Doyle apparently killed off Sherlock Holmes in 'The Final Problem', beginning with 'The Lenton Croft Robberies' in March 1894. Morrison was initially uncredited as the author, although his name was finally printed at the end of the series. The stories were illustrated by Sidney Paget, who had illustrated all the Holmes adventures for The Strand.
Hewitt was deliberately conceived by Morrison as a more realistic contrast to the "superman" figure of Holmes: he's workmanlike, practical and down to earth. That first series featured monthly in The Strand until September 1894; they were then collected in book form under the title 'Martin Hewitt, Investigator'. Two subsequent series of adventures featuring Hewitt appeared in The Windsor Magazine in 1895 and 1896, with a fourth and final series appearing in 'The London Magazine' in 1902-03. The stories are narrated by Hewitt's friend (and sometimes companion) Brett, a lawyer-turned-journalist. However, Brett is a far less active participant in the narrative than Dr. Watson, often not appearing at all in the story himself, merely relating events in the third person.
Morrison's second detective character, Horace Dorrington, also made his debut in The Windsor Magazine in January 1897, in 'The Dorrington Deed Box'. Dorrington is another unusual detective: described as "deeply corrupt" and a "lower class answer to Sherlock Holmes", he blurs the lines of the law, never afraid to resort to blackmail, burglary or fraud to achieve his results.
In addition to his career as a successful author of fiction, Morrison was also a collector of Japanese artwork, publishing a noted book and several articles on the subject. On his death his collection of Japanese paintings, prints and ceramics was left to the British Museum, his son Guy having pre-deceased him.
'The Case of the Dixon Torpedo' first appeared in The Strand Magazine in June 1894.

Interesting, story "The case of the Dixon torpedo", published in 1894, after Doyle killed off his famous detective in the "the Final Problem". A Sherlock Holmes story in 1917 "The Adventure of the Bruce-Partington Plans" had a very similar story plot to "Dixon" accept the mysterious death on a railway track. Perhaps, Doyle lift some elements from Morrison’s story, the same way Morrison was heavily inspired by Doyle’s "the Naval Treaty." Giving each Author their own spin in this ‘game of telephone’ of writing.
@BitesizedAudio
@BitesizedAudio Год назад
Quite so; although 'Bruce-Partington' is a little earlier than that, it was first published in The Strand Magazine in December 1908 (1917 is the date of the book publication where a number of uncollected cases were brought together under the title 'His Last Bow'). Another commenter suggested that Morrison had stolen this plot from Doyle, but clearly that's not quite the case... The Naval Treaty, as you note, is perhaps a closer parallel. But either way, I think it shines an interesting sidelight on how "stolen government secrets" were obviously something of a hot topic in crime fiction in the couple of decades leading up to the First World War. Agatha Christie does something similar in the much later story shortly before World War II, 'The Impossible Theft'

It's like SACD's "the Bruce Partington plans" nonetheless a thicker plot that kept it interesting till the end, worth of rivals of Sherlock Holmes. Thanks Simon.
@inisipisTV
@inisipisTV Год назад
I pointed it out in my comment, except Doyle’s "Bruce Partington…" was published in 1917, while Morrison’s story "Dixon…" was published in 1894, more than 20 years earlier. Since both stories are published the Strand’s magazine (with the same illustrator). My guess, Doyle, after reviving his Detective decided to do a take on the same plot and added a murder mystery with the discovery of the death of the "suspect" to give his own flavor.

I feel the kibbitsing monster trying to slay me. I have such questions. Engineer's drawings are normally huge papers. As he said they wouldn't hide in any pocket. They don't fold well. Not folded, rolled up, I'm sure.. I was wondering if briefcases were searched. Coats were, but cases, or valises? It's the man with the walking stick. That's it. Oh. The monster won. Phooey! Ha.

Another writer who nicked the initial premise from the Adventure of the Bruce Partington plans :)
@BitesizedAudio
@BitesizedAudio Год назад
Yes I noticed the similarities as well, although in fact this story was written in 1894 and Conan Doyle wrote The Bruce Partington Plans in 1908 (and set it in 1895), so perhaps Doyle was nicking the idea from Morrison! Actually, the premise of stolen government papers also drove the plot of his earlier Holmes story 'The Naval Treaty' (November 1893), so perhaps that's the original inspiration. Either way, submarine design espionage was clearly big business in the 1890s!
@SuperBartles

Finding a story of yours I have not heard is impossible. You should number them.
@BitesizedAudio
@BitesizedAudio Год назад
Hmm. I'm not sure how that would work, as the stories are generally all stand-alone and can be listened to in any order. I think numbering them would confuse people and make it look as if I want people to listen in the order I dictate, which might be off-putting especially for new listeners. In any case, it's certainly not impossible to identify stories you've not heard yet: if you go to the main videos page - www.youtube.com/@BitesizedAudio/videos - stories already listened to should appear with a red line underneath them (though this might vary depending on your browser... it works in Edge, Chrome, Firefox and on the android app, not sure about other devices). There is indeed. One of main alterations being the complete removal of Martin Hewitt, to be replaced by another detective! For reasons I'm not completely clear about; although it is a few years since I saw that episode so I can't recall the details.
