My moms friend was neighbors with them when they still lived near there. She said that she would catch him (the father in law) looking at the women in the neighborhood through their windows. So creepy
Iam thinking with Steve keep saying that Susan is attracted to him too,we all no that's bollocks, but what if that's why Josh killed her, god, the whole thing,is horrible, poor kids,Susan..😧😢.Josh an Steve 💩💨💨😈👿👁️👀👀👀👊🐍🐍
That video with him talking about rubbing her feet....wow...that was so incredibly creepy. Creepy isn't the right word for it. It actually made me a little sick to my stomach
God that 911 call was so frustrating. At that point I guess you have to lie to the operator and say he did threaten their lives because the operator is so incompetent.
I am forever upset that those kids were murdered from someone they trusted and the police not taking the social workers call seriously!! So frustrating
You wanna know what’s sad? So I love a few houses down from where he murdered them and we have a fire station at the entrance of our neighborhood... it’s so close
I would blame it on the 911 operator. I’m not sure how it works but I would think that the 911 operator had to tell the cops “oh just take your time it’s nothing extremely important” or something like that.
@Ban Me Nots, I Want You To Remember I can attest after having to speak to west valley police before for a wide range of issues you have to be extremely specific and really make it out as a serious situation even if you’re not sure so they take it seriously.
There were SO MANY red flags in this case and it’s a shame Susan has never been found. How was he getting home visits?? Why was the phone operator so confused?? I hope he got fired
His obsession with her was disgusting and the fact josh didn't do anything to stop his dad and back his own wife is just as disgusting. I hate them both with all of my being.
@@DumpsterFairy97 is that a joke ...people like him should be sacked and replaced by somebody competent ....why would you keep him on just train people to not do what he did .....you get competent people to do that
That dispatcher should have been fired and held up on charges. So disgusting his inability and incompetence to do his job. My heart is broken for Susan and her children.
I think the saddest thing is, that when she was making the video of all her possessions it just seems like she knows that something bad would be happening to her. Seems like she thought the kids might make it out okay.
Yes, she knew. Nobody writes a letter like she did if they are not suspecting it. But she did not believe it actually happening, because else she would have escaped with the boys. Only, he would have got the custody...so she just stayed as it was easier and it is very hard to believe that the husband that you loved and married would actually kill you.
@@SatumainenOlento she writes in the letter that her husband won't divorce her and Warned her that if she tries to leave, he will ruin her. In the process he will ruin himself too, but Susan would not be able to live with her kids. I think she was too scared to leave and just wrote that letter and made the video to atleast document her fear. Wished she could have escaped, fled to another country with her kids or something. But then maybe she was also worried her husband would trouble her family and keep looking for her. Who knows !
exactly. and legit killed himself with his kids. fucking egoistic and condencending. didnt let anyone live just to save his own ass. awful person josh is
this is so frustrating. How in the living fuck was he not a suspect?! Just the fact he went on a midnight camping trip to making fucking smores is enough to say HEY this guy ain't right. Even if that IS what he did, who the hell does that? In a blizzard? at midnight? 2hrs away? Holy shit man. "kids don't lie, they said their mum was there" well... arrest the fucker. Then we find out his brother disposed of his car the day after? HELLO?! I'm not one to point fingers in these kinds of videos, because I don't know everything but this just.. OF COURSE IT WAS HIM! SO FREAKIN OBVIOUS! Sorry to hijack your comment to vent there lol
I think he was the only suspect. Remember prosecuting a case without a body is kind of new. Not sure it was done much then or if there were even provisions in the law to allow for it. Not sure everywhere does it yet even.
He was reprimanded, with a letter. Ouch, must have really sucked to be him and get that letter, after waiting 8mins to actually dispatch the police and another 13mins for them to arrive due to him applying the non emergency rating. Poor guy. The letter included the administration agreeing with him that there were many things out of his control and that he should just 'do better'. Oh, and they said, this whole situation should have a corrective nature and not a punitive nature. So, overall... he barely got a smack on the wrist, was provided excuses as to why he sucked so bad, and wasn't punished in any way, just corrected. We'll never know whether the children could have been saved if the operator had acted like a human being and understood the urgency. Although, them arriving only 13mins later for a non emergency call means, they were pretty damned close. But then he did only dispatch the police, not the fireman. So, even if the police had arrived, they would have had to wait for the firetrucks.
@@Angel-vv9xo ok mr. perfect, also she was doing a bad job at explaining the situation, she trembled a lot while on the call which might lead him to believe this is a bit strange and not a real emergency, unfortunately it ended in tragedy for the poor kids and now he is being pointed by you the perfect human being to be " guilty ", " bad at his job " and the such you are just a trash letter on the youtube world if you are so good just apply for the position who knows how many lives could be saved everyday with such a smart person like you on the other side of the phone! Or will you be just a pointless opinion on youtube? The same goes for Hezabelle, Keyona Mcbride and so on.
Hearing Susan's voice made me really sad, because she sounded like somebody who I would have loved to have as a friend 💖 And she is gone, totally needlessly.
I've heard that 911 call before and it still makes me as violently angry as the first time I heard it. I don't know if the boys could have been saved given what Josh did to them, but one thing is for sure that operator is partially responsible for their fate. It's obvious Josh killed Susan. This is such a tragic story.
I watched another video about this case. That person reported that this dispatcher went through extensive training and took full responsibility for what he did wrong and now is a dispatch trainer and plays that God awful video for the new dispatchers to teach them exactly what NOT to do. It is extremely hard to listen to. He will have to live with that for the rest of his life.
@@Jhoomers Right!? It was like he was messing with her or something 🤷♀️ He was so confused about the whole supervisor thing which didn’t even matter at that point. So odd.
He was retained and seemed to feel horrible about it, but I still get so angry. When I saw this title, my first thought should have been sadness for Susan and the boys or rage at the majority of the Powell family. But my first reaction was anger at the dispatcher. Maybe it's because those are the people we turn to. The courts shouldn't have allowed visits, lots of things went wrong but that call is so powerful and frightening. Every call should be treated respectfully and seriously. I hate bad dispatchers. They pop up occasionally in true crime but fortunately the vast majority are properly trained and do care.
I was friends with Susan when we were in high school. I went to her wedding. Josh was a very creepy guy. I moved shortly after their wedding, but we stayed in touch until Josh insisted that I was a bad influence because I left the church. Susan was incredibly sweet and I decided not to put her in the middle. I regret my decision to this day.
Im so sorry Denise. Please don’t blame yourself, this is not your fault at all. This horrible man is at fault, what a disgusting excuse and waste of a human being.
The fault lies completely on the shoulders of Josh. He was a manipulative abuser and even if you tried, it would be hard to say if it helped. He could have become aggravated and taken that out on her. He’s the person who should be feeling guilt not you.
that "wait a minute, you can't supervise yourself" sounds like something straight out of some stupid mock comedy film, I admire how calm the supervisor tried to remain
Yes it's completely obnoxious but I do understand why he said it now that I've listen clearly to it it's because right before that he asks her who's exercising the visit meaning who is having the visit with the children she says I am I think she just misunderstood the question because her mind was racing and she was panicked and that freaking idiot operator did not bother to just move on past it
I mean I can understand why as a 911 operator you would want to clarify hey but you're not supposed to supervise your own self if you're having a supervised visit but at the same time he should have grasped quickly that she made a mistake because she already explained to him that the dad was having the visit so he should have caught on that she just misspoke and move past it to get those children help
You forgot about the kids interviews where they said their mom was “at the dinosaur park”Where ever they find a public spot, camping ground that’s known for dinosaur fossils is sadly where their mother was or is. This case reminds me to always treat women with the most respect, love and loyalty! I just wanna be the opposite of this person!
I hope that operator feels guilty for the rest of his life for the way he handled that call. So awful! I can’t believe how disrespectful he was to her and that he made her explain her job for like 2 mins during an EMERGENCY CALL 😭
@@HaleyStark. still doesn’t take away the fact he helped those boys die, that supervisor would have to live with that forever knowing she was trying to help and basically being ignored and those boys were found holding hands in their playroom. I’m sorry but he is an absolute twat forever!!!!!!!!!
I know. That really breaks my heart. If I had a friend who didn't have food for her kids and had to ask for it, I couldn't call myself her friend unless I tried to help get her out of that situation. And like the letter of if anything happens to me it was my husband who did it, like who just accepts that letter? Like if your concerned enough to be writing that something's wrong and I want to punch whoever received that letter in the face for not helping her. And I wish they had some kind of foundation in her name my heart aches at the thought that her life was stolen and her children's lives were stolen, I'd really like to see some kind of program in place that supports woman in similar situations and there have been many truce crime instances where they have done that very thing. Or else for example there wouldn't be an Amber alert.
Indeed, all murdering cases are disturbing but murdering your own kids is another level of sickness and cruelty, you can check the case of the family Watts, is revolting and heartbreaking.. there's a documentary about it on Netflix.
i admire that social worker. she did everything she could & police didn’t listen to her. i was beyond furious when i heard the 911 call. safe wishes & much love from utah
The fact that he murdered his two innocent children when they were excited to see him is so heartbreaking. He could have just killed himself why did he have to take their lives too 😡 😭
That thought plays in my head on repeat! He’s going out anyways why take the boys? It’s not going 2 make a difference the moment he’s dead. They won’t be w/ him as he’s being tortured & burnt up in hell! 👹
Control and Power, like he would give up that power and control over the kids. He took them with him in death is the ultimate control he had over the entire situation. For Josh, this was his final win over every aspect.
@@Akasha6915 Yep 😫 Classic case of, "if I can't have them, no one can" and a sense of entitlement that made him believe that, since he helped create them, they were his "property". People like him make me so sick.
I was honestly freaking out listening to that conversation. I doubt it would have made a difference, the house was set to blow up, but my God, what the hell. I truly hope that he was fired!
It bothers me how careful we have to be when choosing a partner. Even then, so many cases are about spouses snapping out of nowhere and there was no way to see it coming. Sometimes when the relationship is abusive, like this one, you can kinda see how it could go so wrong, but I don't think most people expect murder to happen.
Not sure if you have seen these around the internet, but many women, myself included, have created "If I Go Missing" Folders. People include details about their social media accounts, recent head shots, medical/dental records, banking information, identifying scars/tattoos/birthmarks, contacts etc. It is sad I even must say this, but people list off potential suspects that could be involved as well. It is devastating that this is what the world has come to, but it is a precaution I recommend we should all take.
@@liviyahorbatuik6186 i’ve made a list like this and i’m so careful about letting my friends & family know where i am at all times. i’ve regularly thought about how i need to react if i’m ever attacked again, and it feels like i’m reliving trauma over and over. i hate that people have to do so much just to protect themselves on a daily basis. even without factoring in having a partner!
“people that know me know that i’m a good dad” actually people that know him know he starved his kids and didn’t love them. he took “emotional time” during the interview to make up excuses
I understand that there was no evidence to charge him, but to continue allowing the children to go there... That is what is most disturbing. Honestly, seeing this guy for even a minute you know something is not right. Sadly, the system failed yet more children. Heartbreaking.
I read somewhere he got written up for it and now he trains other people to not be like him during 911 calls. So fucking dumb he should have been fired
The dispatcher sounded desensitized on the phone. He was so disconnected emotionally and intellectually, I hope he found a career since this incident that he is passionate about...
During the interview he literally talked about their relationship in the past, he said : “I was a good husband” at 22:40.... he just gave himself up by saying that...
Not only that but the body language he displayed was so disjointed. Emotions didn't reach his eyes and he held expressions when he thought they were appropriate.
The system failed those boys. It’s so heart breaking. I really thought they were going to at least have a decent life with their grandparents. This broke my heart 💔
Susan’s video is also her preparing to leave Josh and documenting all the stuff he bought WITH HER MONEY. He wasn’t employed and was basically a bum living off of her. She was preparing for a big legal fight to show his stuff and her stuff. If i remember it was her friends who suggested she started filming things bc they were so worried about her. She had mentioned that she believed that if anything were to happen to her, Josh should be looked at first.
My heart dropped when I heard that he attacked the children with a hatchet. Why? Why would he ever do that? That’s so disturbing. Everything about this is disturbing but that was really painful to hear.
I know 😞 it's so evil. He was going to kill them in that explosion AND he felt he had to cause them even more pain by attacking them with a hatchet. What a literal piece of garbage. 🤬🤬 It makes me so mad and it makes me cry. So effed up!!!
I remember watching the house burn on the news live. I think it was either LDS conference weekend or the super bowl. From day 1 I knew in my gut Josh killed her, so when he killed kids my mom and I sat and watched the news and just cried. 3 innocent lives taken.
The father in law, Josh himself, the people who granted Josh visitations, the dispatcher, the sketchy brother all of them are equally to be blamed I’m so livid and disgusted honestly
The video she took oh herself talking about things that josh did is because a lawyer she spoke with one time about a divorcing josh advised her to start documenting things so she could use it for custody battle if need be.
I just don’t understand why he needed the hatchet... just why? He’s already planning on ending all of their lives with the explosion, what is the point of causing so much brutal violence while literally looking his own children in the eye?
I feel so bad for Elizabeth. It was her job to keep those kids safe and she did everything in her power to do that, but she had to watch that house burn and know she can't do anything. My heart goes out to her, I'm sure she blames herself and it's not her fault.
I feel Chris was almost inspired by Josh Powell. Except Chris had the "decency" to not butcher his poor children before blowing up the house they're all in - nor did I kill himself as well. Either way, both cases are ✨absolutely f u c k e d✨
he accused her of being a witch, she liked making her own tea.... I know that this is an incredibly tragic case, and Steve is an absolute monster, but damn that line made me laugh
I have been reading the throne of glass series for the last 6 months and I love them! I can’t believe that I haven’t thought to get them on audible! It’s a must now!
It’s so sad that the grandparents out lived their child and grandchildren. Can’t imagine the pain they went through all because so many people were negligent and willfully ignorant.
@@AB-vx8qd I'm not saying that. With so many different turns of events in this case it's hard to determine who's guilty amd who isn't besides the actual murderer. All I'm saying is, if police would have shown up earlier, which *maybe* they would have, if the 911 operator didn't act like he couldn't care less, there *might have been* a *slight* chance for the boys. Who knows really, but I'm sure that operator thought about that as well afterwards. At least I would and I would feel horrible.
pleaseeee it made me cringe so bad. like dude did they not train you right ?? they shouldn't put such irresponsible, immature , unprofessional ass mfs to be in charge of PEOPLES lives !! something def could have been done
Seeing that house on fire broke my heart. I feel so bad what those kids went through thinking they were just going to spend some time with their dad. This made me tear up.
Oh THANK YOU for saying that about the emergency call, I’ve never heard such idiotic, pedantic incompetence in all my years, for an emergency responder he was an utter idiot. That poor woman desperate to get help. He wasn’t listening AT ALL!!! Thank you Bella, you have done incredibly with this video, proud of you fellow Aussie!❤️🖤
I remember listening to this 911 call a while back and I hope that dispatcher was fired forever. He was unhelpful and just.... Dumb. Not to mention rude and condescending. Like, how could you not classify that as a life-threatening situation????????????? And there are children involved..........
He seriously was so confused about the simplest thing ever. He just wanted to be a dick and talk down to this poor woman trying to help these children. Idk how he lives with that
the fact that in the interview he says “i was a good husband” tells me everything. They were still looking for her when that interview took place. If he was innocent, he wouldn’t be using past tense yet. But he knows for a fact she is dead so he said “was”. 🤷♀️
Wow, what happened to those boys is absolutely devastating; I barely have the words to express how much this saddens me. My condolences go out to all of their family and friends, thank you for bringing attention to this case.
Also, it was most definitely while you were talking about the events leading to their passing that I noticed you were wearing nugget earrings and I became very conflicted
When you said Steve was released in 2017 I gasped and felt sick, then when you said he died a year later I was like thank god. His video talking about Susan was the most sick thing I’ve seen in a long time.
“How long will it be?” “I don’t know they have to answer life threatening situation first”. I hope his new job is picking up trash in the city park. How can 911 operators be so callous. It was a obvious she was worried the boys were going to get hurt. This whole story is disgusting.
As a social worker I’m so frustrated with this case! That poor woman probably blamed herself for letting the boys in when she could never imagine what’s to come!
I’m in college to be a Criminal Psychologist, I’ve been watching true crime for nearly 7 years; I don’t get shaken easily. This case disturbs me so much. Those poor boys, their entire lives, they suffered only to have multiple system’s fail them and to be murdered by the father they loved so much. This case will go on a short list of cases that disturb me so much that I’ll try to avoid it in the future.
I remember hearing about this case. I can't believe her body has NEVER been found. Like, that's absolutely insane to me that there's no trace whatsoever.
that man was truly sick...to hurt children, let alone his OWN children?? he was a vile human being from the start, and I'm so sorry for his kids and wife...may they rest in peace
The little boy's drawing of them in the truck with the mother in the trunk could've very well indicated she was in the trunk as they drove 2 hours to the camping site where they roasted smores.. being the late time of the night the boys were likely tired and perhaps had fallen asleep and gave Josh the opportunity to dispose of the body before driving back home with the boys.. I wonder if the truck was ever tested for DNA??
In the end of the video it is actually Josh's brother Michael whose car might been used to move the body further. Based on that he left it to be taken to parts on the junk yard on the day when Susan disappeared.
@@Elena-bk4fs not sure if it's true, but someone above said the dispatcher took full responsibility for his stupidity. He is now a dispatch trainer, and plays that recording for his trainees to teach them exactly what NOT to do!
Not sure if it's true, but someone else said he took responsibility for his stupidity and now trains dispatchers. He plays that recording to his trainees to teach them what NOT to do. I'm not sure if it's true, but if so, I mean, I guess it's good he learned better and is trying to teach other to do better(let's be honest, police would have never made it in time either way) it's definitely frustrating though and I am surprised he wasn't fired.
in the mid 2000s it was very common to make a video showing a tour of ur house as record of all ur valuable belongings. there used to be PSAs on public tv telling families to do this, and my mom asked me to do it a couple times
LOL I'm good, I was just watching the video of that "door dash" driver that stole the family dog when she dropped the food off, I'm skitzed out by deliveries for the day
The poor social worker. You can hear how distraught she sounded. And then to see the explosion. I can't imagine. Rip to the two little boy. Poor Susan too. May they all find peace 🙏🙏
The fact that Bella is all the way on the other side of the world and is covering a story that happened 10 miles away from me but people in my own town still dont even know about is blowing my mind.
Edit: I know way too much about this case from listening to all of the cold podcast and watching a few documentaries, so here’s some of the craziest things That aren’t in this video: ALSO the CRAZIEST thing Steve did (IMO) was that he kept Susan’s used tampons and pads, fingernail clippings, and used cotton balls from her taking off her nail polish. He kept them in DATED baggies in his drawers. Also Steve took Jen (his oldest daughter) when she was 12 to a hotel because he was in love with her. Josh also killed family pets and surprisingly had two birds that he loved and showed more affection to than to his children and Susan
And the reason Susan made that video because she wanted to document her assets because she was preparing for divorce. Divorce is really frowned upon in the mormon church (not so much now but it was) and women are often told to try and stick it out with their husbands. But she also had a second bank account where she was having a portion of her paychecks going into it so she could have enough money saved up for when she decided to divorce
The poisoning theory is the most believed one (to my knowledge at least) because when Susan was last seen she was at her house with her friend and Josh and her sons and Josh had made them all pancakes. Susan ate here and became super sick and went to sleep and her friend stayed a little longer (they were working on something but I forgot) anyways when police searched the house they found some pancakes thrown away and tested them but they came back negative for poison, but they can’t prove whether or not those were the ones Susan was eating.
Hearing Susan have to listen to that disgusting conversation about how Steve interacts with her was absolutely infuriating. That man is so disgusting that he actually believes his own delusions. Filth. He is responsible for ruining all of these lives in my eyes, starting with his son.
