In this brief but chilling tale, narrator Montresor puts into motion a fantastical and cruel revenge fantasy against his sworn enemy, Fortunato, who believes they are friends.
Tempting him with the promise of a taste of Amontillado sherry, he leads him into his family catacombs, plying him with wine and flattery. Poe slowly reveals to the reader Montresor's true intent in leading Fortunato into the charnel depths with his trademark command of atmosphere and pacing.
Troubled American writer Edgar Allan Poe exhibits his mastery of suspense in the horrific short story "The Cask of Amontillado,” which was first published in 1846. Replete with death, deception, and a disturbing denouement, this twisted fable is a touchstone of the horror genre.
Did you know that The Cask of Amontillado was inspired by a spooky story Poe read called “A Man Built in a Wall,” about workers who found a skeleton mysteriously entombed behind a church wall in Italy?
Like most Edgar Allan Poe stories, The Cask of Amontillado is rich with literary devices including themes of revenge, folly of pride, and paradox. Motifs and main characters such as dampness, Montresor, Fortunato, wine, and masquerade also work to create the psychological horror Poe is known for.

This analysis was very profound and revealed a number of ironies and parallels I do not think I would have caught on my own! Something I would like to add, however, was that in your analysis of Fortunato, you claimed that his name was ironic because he was in fact very unfortunate. This can be even more so ironic, however, because he led a very fortunate life. A rich man and a connoisseur. It is eiry how a man can lead a fulfilling and rich life, only to die a lonely and unsuspected death! This was very clever on Poe's behalf and it begs the question: What are true riches? A man who lives a life of wealth and gluttony for material goods dies all the same as a poor man. I believe this theme was a brilliant underlying message to those who caught it!

It was a real help for my class. It had great visuals and wonderful content. Just a small request. Many of my students who watched it felt that it the narration was a bit fast. This is because English is not their native tongue. Your content is great and I would like to show more to my students. Kindly narrate slower. Thanks for your help!

The coat of arms for the Montresors is a snake biting a foot. The foot stepped on the snake and that is why the snake is biting the foot. Not the snake bit the foot and the foot stepped on the snake.

There are several inaccuracies here. EXAMPLE the coat of arms. The video states the foot is Montresor and the snake is Fortunato but it is more accurate to state the opposite. Fortunato (the foot) thinks he is hurting (insulting) Montresor (the snake), but little does the foot know, he will be bitten by Montresor, hence revenge. The foot stepping on the snake won't kill it, but the bite of the snake on the heel of the foot would provide a venomous bite. There are other inaccuracies here as well.

I've written an unusual mystery story, entitled HAZARD ON THE LOOSE - which can be found in a volume of my stories entitled SEVEN TALL TALES; available at Amazon as a book or kindle - which you may be interested in; and which bears some similarities to The Cask of Amontillado; in that the denouement takes place in the wine cellar of an old house, where two keen wine buffs are seemingly intent on sampling some fine old vintages. The tale concerns a businessman, by the name of Jack Hazard, who breaks out of jail, with outside help, after serving five years of a fifteen year sentence. He had already promised to murder the four executives that he claimed had deliberately framed him up and saw him sentenced on entirely trumped up charges. One by one they are tracked down and murdered; until only two of the four remain. One of the remaining two hires the services of two private detectives, to add to the police protection he has already. Though it is assumed by most people that Hazard is the murderer the private detectives voice their doubts about this and reason that Hazard would be far too focused on keeping a low profile and avoiding recapture - as a large police force is dedicated to that purpose - to pursue some bizarre revenge vendetta. Will events prove them right? But if it isn't Hazard, then who is the actual killer? Could you guess? Happy listening, and reading.

6:20 - Christianity does not teach “reincarnation.” And I think as another the family crest holds a deeper symbolism than the host realizes. It’s probably a representation of the Edenic prophecy of Genesis 3, “You shall bruise its head but it shall bruise Your heel.” This pertains to the Son of Man crushing the head of the serpent but the serpent biting the heel of the Son of Man. In Christian theology this is speaking of Christ on the cross defeating death & the great serpent-adversary of mankind. Having taught Poe’s story myself I am confident Poe is either making a slight against God for what appears to Poe as an unpleasant aspect of God enacting His “vengeance” upon those who have offended Him and/or Poe is tacitly suggesting that Montressor and Fortunado are representing mankind apart from God’s forgiveness. We are all like these fools. Wine here, instead of representing Jesus’s blood shed for the forgiveness of sin, is the vengeful vintage foolishly imbibed for the purpose of drunkenness - wine is a “mocker” (see Proverbs 20:1), a fool. So how will you have your wine? As a “fool” that leads to vengeance and death (Fortunado does not come out of his tomb), or will you have the wine of forgiveness and life Jesus offers as His blood, shed for the forgiveness of sin? Poe to say the least was conflicted on this point.
