Hi Jarrod! Most 11th gen intel cpus for gaming laptops are paired with an intel UHD graphics iGpu, not an Iris Xe. So that means we are not able to benefit from CASO?

Yup, just like DLSS 3, I had a feeling my 2 year old laptop wouldn't be supported (5900HS/3080). When it comes to software support, these companies never fail to disappoint.
im glad i got a 40 series laptop earlier this year. at least i know that it'll last a good while in terms of performance and newer features would be supported.
It’s actually crazy to see such a small difference between hybrid/optimus and dGPU mode now. This is truly a great improvement for laptops with no mux or even just with a mux but without advanced Optimus. I’d also be more inclined to just leave my laptop in Optimus now after seeing these results.
I think MUX solution is still viable since it's a hardware solution. Easier to fix or diagnose. Having a software solution only benefit for some laptops but even a slight software update could break it. It is a good addition for laptops with no MUX of course.
CASO is a win-win for my laptop. Because not only do i not have Advanced Optimus (so i have to reboot everytime) my laptop has a Freesync display and can ONLY use that in regular Optimus mode. So thanks to CASO i never have to reboot AND i can use Freesync all the time.

Edit: Can you try testing the tech with lighter 2D games like osu!? Such games usually get the biggest performance penalty with Optimus, which can be as high as 60% If CASO can’t supports AMD 5000 series or lower, it’s much less meaningful. Most mid-range laptops from this generation onwards have MUX-Switch already, only the older ones really need this.
You are thinking about it wrong. The point of CASO is not to give you an FPS boost on your old laptop. Its to ease manufacturing cost of newer laptops. There will be no more MUX switches going forward. And all this time you thought they were doing it for you...
The ROG Strix G15 AE is Ryzen 5000 and of course can only run dedicated graphics only when plugged into a monitor using the only USB-C port. So basically, I can't use my laptop as a "laptop" if I want the performance I should get. These are the kinds of laptops that should get this haha. Continue to not understand why companies bring out features to improve performance (this, or something like DLSS), and its not avaliable on hardware that needs it.
Comment above is an awful take. I agree with you, they should’ve added support for Ryzen 5000 as there were tons of laptops without a mux at that time. Especially that laptop since it was such a beast and such a great value!
I noticed this improvement awhile back on an HP Omen 16 with 11800H/3070 when using Optimus mode and Intel Adaptive Sync instead of dGPU mode with G-Sync. I was shocked just how small the difference was and how well it ran with Intel Adaptive Sync tech. I chalked the improvement in Optimus mode up to faster iGPUs, CPUs and ram speed. Now I know this is the reason. Awesome, now Intel iGPU Adaptive Sync is worth while and G-Sync is no longer needed! Great news for gamers that have laptops that have adaptive sync through Intel Graphics Command Center!! You should look into this!

I got an M16 (12900h + 3070ti) that hasn't been delivered yet, and I was worried I'd get screen tearing because it only supports adaptive sync when optimus is on and it doesn't have Gsync. Now I see that I can indeed use CASO + Optimus On + Adaptive Sync ! Thank you!
Wow! That's a really big deal. No more closing every app you have open, then restarting to game. Also I definitely all the testing you did even though you breezed through it. Definitely appreciate the work.
This seems like a very promising technology, I do hope they improve support for older CPUs. Something like my 9th gen Intel-based AW M15 R2 is still supported by Dell, and will be for another year or so. It'd be a shame if something like this won't make its way to the platform.
For someone who has to restart their laptop to switch gpus, like myself, I welcome this update. Personally, I've never turned off optimus when I play games because I'm happy with the performance i'm getting already (2022 model hp omen 16, rtx3060 140w). Maybe it's because I've been enjoying this update without even realising. But it's nice to know that because of this software update, instead of enjoying 60-80% of the performance my gpu can give because of optimus, now I can enjoy around 90-95% of my gpu's performance with optimus on
It's a shame that most 11th gen intel laptops aren't supported as they usually comes with UHD graphics instead of intel IRIS XE. Which means the requirements for CASO simply does NOT make sense! Since most laptops that comes with discrete graphics card will likely have UHD graphics instead of IRIS XE.
This technology is useless, that's what I thought when I read about it. Most muxless laptops have Ryzen 5000, Intel 10th gen or older. These dont benefit. Well done Microsoft.
If I have to think a positive, it's that people who care about battery life can avoid caring about switching Optimus off, unless they really like G-Sync.
no wonder I didn't see any performance difference using my laptop display and an external monitor because that bypasses the iGPU and connects directly to the GPU. Microsoft finally doing something meaningful
I seriously hate the dual GPU architecture in laptops, it creates so many driver and performance issues. Sadly my laptop is an AMD 5500 with no MUX switch, really hope they get support later.
The Mux switch is almost non existent in Ryzen 4000 series CPUs, the fact that this feature is only supported on the latest CPUs is quite shitty to be honest. And the difference in FPS is smaller than doing HDMI out with laptops without the Mux switch which means it's almost useless in the first place.
My laptop has intel 11400h with intel uhd graphics. can it use CASO? they said intel 11th gen but also with iris graphics in the blog post. I am a bit confused

There not ignoring older laptops, there just not supporting them. It's counter productive to you buying another laptop. It's like working to put themselves out of business. And it costs themselves resources to do so. Can you blame them? Doesn't make any sense. Just saying.
Cries in 4800h. I've already been fucked over a few times for having a gtx 1660ti that performs about the same as 2060 without the extra RT and tensor cores. Now I'm screwed over for having a cpu that's 2 years too old
the boost is very noticable. Before, I had to turn core isolation feature off and restart my pc to get a stable 30+ fps in some games with ray-tracing. Now, some games give me desirable fps without doing that anymore. But, turning core isolation off still helps boosting your fps.
I agree, I like advance optimus for the g-sync feature. Though this will really be useful for laptops without gsync and only have freesync from the amd cpu or laptops whose usb-c / hdmi is not directly connected to the dgpu.
I am essentially about to get an hp envy 16, and i was kinda scared because of its lack of mux switch but not anymore, as im not really a hardcore gamer and only play not so heavy games like genshin and whatnot, so i'd rather have the better built quality and better screen of that one
I would love to use it but my laptop is an i7-9750h if I remember correctly. If they decide to add this technology to even old generation technology I'll be very happy.
I use an external monitor connected via HDMI directly to my GPU and rarely use my actual laptop screen if ever. But this is a cool thing for people who do. I notice that laptops with 5xxx processors though are less likely to have the dGPU connected to HDMI so they really should support those.
So would you recommend just using optimus instead of advanced Optimus/automatic select? I've had some issues with advanced Optimus where the pc thinks another monitor is plugged in when it isn't.
I'm in the 1% where this is actually supposed to be legitimately useful, since I have a Zephyrus S17 with a 4k screen, which didn't come with a mux switch or optimus at all... It'd be nice to tell what, if any, gains I'm getting from it. Maybe by comparing against laptop screen vs external monitor directly connected to the GPU? Also not too sure if it really is implemented in Win10, or if I have the required processor (the i9-11900H isn't explicitly listed in their list of 11th gen processors, nor are any i9s, so maybe all the i9s of that gen just come with Intel Iris Xe?). It'd be nice to know these things for myself, even if I'm generally happy with how my laptop still performs today.
I have a ASUS TUF F15 (2021) and it has a i5 11400H processor in it. And I have intel UHD graphics. On the requirements section for CASO, it says Intel Iris Xe graphics for 11th gen processors or higher. So is there any chance that I'm not going to be able to use it.
There's modern mid ranged laptops that doesn't have mux switch as well as g-sync/freesync or intel version if they are going to make it. But this sounds like a really good way to get more for the games without the need to do physical modification to make it be faster and cooler.

I'm really annoyed at having a 10th gen i7 laptop... about a year after I bought my msi gs66 stealth intel put the 10th gen in "legacy support". Like it was a decade old or something. I keep discovering all this shit I can't have and can't do because I didn't get an 11th gen or 12th gen.
Using a MUX switch to disable the IGPU will still free up the RAM reserved for the IGPU? Could be worth it for laptops with 16gb RAM in some games. I always have the IGPU disabled on my Legion 5.
Do this affect performance when playing on an external monitor? Displays connected is like playing with Mux Off when there's only the external monitor to render, right?
its crazy the 2022 g14 doesn't support AMD's Smart Access Graphics but at least this CASO update will help. Does that mean I can leave the Mux switch in optimized mode and as along as it's plugged in to use Turbo mode and the DGPU, im getting basically the same performance as on Ultimate mode? since that's huge if so

I actually argue that Optimus-on is still the best method of running a laptop. When using Advanced Optimus lots of programs (not just the game) switches to the dedicated GPU. Switching back doesn't bring all those programs back to the iGPU. Using the nvidia "gpu activity icon" in the taskbar always shows a bunch of random background programs hitting my dGPU after a game has closed. From there the processor continues to draw wattage which hurts battery life.
If you have a 11th Gen Intel CPU but it’s fit with a UHD graphics IGPU chip, does that mean this CASO thing won’t work? The requirements say it needs Iris Xe IGPU graphics. Apparently my i7-11800H CPU only has UHD graphics
so that's the reason why my 2022 Gigabyte XE5 (which doesn't have MUX) performs the same or bit better compared to other 3070Ti laptops with MUX or Adv. Optimus.

I don't really understand the tests. On average it says with Caso ("Optimus On + CASO") the frame-rate is slower. Shouldn't it be faster? My Laptop does not even allow toggling optimus on or off (Yoga 7 Pro 14IRH8, i7 13700h and nvidia rtx 4050).
The framerate with Optimus and CASO is faster than what Optimus used to be, but direct to dgpu will always be faster. I mention the differences at 4:52
Me too, but I can't figure out how to turn it off, it might not even be possible. I considered running a much older Windows version on the same laptop, but then there would be other differences at play too. I left comments on the Microsoft blog post asking about this, but no reply in over a week.
My Acer Predator Helios 300 i7 11900H doesn't have the mux switch, it would be a nice uplift for my laptop i believe. Previously i was thinking to buy the Asus Strix Scar 17 having i9 12900H. After watching this i think it's not necessary for now.
