When my husband and I were doing pre marriage counseling (requirement in Texas in 2007/2008) the pastor whom was facilitating said “Ask yourself ‘Is this going to matter in five years?’ “ it’s got us through good and “bad” times (We don’t really fight, nit pick maybe). July we will be celebrating our thirteenth anniversary. (Fourteen years together in total. We were engaged three months into our relationship. When he asked my dad’s permission [this is very respectful, least in the south], my dad asked us to wait a year. We literally waited his year request. Engaged 7/1/07 married 7/12/08) We are now 34 and 33 respectively. Married at the age of 21 and 20. My advice: elope. We had the big wedding, we really couldn’t afford and wished we saved the money for something else. Honeymoon yes! Little known secret: When checking into hotels, mention y’all are on y’all’s honeymoon. If room is available, y’all are likely to move up. 😉 2. Y’all won’t get a long all the time. It’s just real life. It’s okay to disagree, have separate opinions etc ... “Is this argument (whatever it’s about) going to matter in five years?” B. Walk away to think of how y’all can compromise the situation at hand. C. Compromise compromise compromise!!! D. Never go to bed angry!!!!!! Stewing on it WILL blow the situation out of hand!!!! E. If you wait to move in until married (I did not wait.) to move in, you WILL have different opinions. Y’all are each used to living each one’s way. Compromise. F. Waiting until marriage to have sex, don’t expect it to be “thexbestxthingxever!!! It won’t. Honeymoon/wedding night will hurt. Will be awkward. Will be extremely “unromantic”. The first time is never all sunshine and rainbows. We had sex in the beginning of our relationship, we experienced all of the above our first weeks/month with sex. It’s incredible now. We still have a great sex life. G. Honeymoon period of relationship will end. This is normal. Lack of sex/whatever the first 1-6 months that makes it that way for you doesn’t mean he/she doesn’t love you anymore. Relationship/marriage evolve. Go with it.
