Swimming fast is a combination of fitness and technique, one is about physical hard work the other more mental. We are going to be looking into the catch part of front crawl and showing how you can improve this important part of the stroke.
Subscribe to GTN: gtn.io/SubscribetoGTN
Check out the GTN Shop: gtn.io/cb
You can break the front crawl stroke into phases, the catch, the pull, the exit and the recovery. The stroke starts with the catch where your hand enters the water, the pull is the main underwater phase, the exit is as sounds, when your hand and arm come out of the water then the recovery is your arm coming over the surface of the water and back past your head.
Without a good catch the rest of the stroke is going to struggle, getting hold of the water at the front of the stroke is vital for a strong pull. But what exactly is this part of the swim stroke we are talking about.
The catch is when your hand enters the water at the front of the stroke; when your movement changes from moving forwards to pulling back and down under your body. The moment when your hand and forearm start to make this new movement is the catch, in theory you are “catching” this new body of water.
There are lots of drills you can do to help improve the catch phase of your stroke and these include:
- Front scull
- Single arm drill
- Fist swimming
- Scull starts

Global Triathlon Network my fav.drill lately is a single paddle swim(one hand normal the other with a paddle on), varying the hands each lap. And the finish drill; leading hand forward, body rolled to side, while upper arm is stuck to the body, the front arm is pressing back and returning back to the 6 o clock position down(like a triceps press). Pufff I hope it's clear

As a swimming coach, I'd like to point out that your presenters have terrible catches. They bend the elbow too late and then don't keep a high elbow through the pull

Hi. I’ve just started swimming again,but I’m only using ‘my’ version of the breaststroke ( I’m not too good at timing my arms with my legs,if I’m being honest). I would love to be able to do the crawl properly,but I can’t seem to time the strokes with breathing ( not drinking half the pool). Any tips please,as it may save the lifeguard a job. All the best.👍🏾🏊🏼‍♂️

In the early 70s, Mark Spitz, (and coaches) scientifically proved that an open hand, or cupped hand, pulled the same amount of water. It was determined that when the fingers were comfortably spread, or open slightly, captured water as effectively as cupped, with less effort.

Definitely guilty of over-extending the glide as well, and I'm working on that. I also recently became aware of a hitch in my catch immediately after taking a breath. During the glide my elbow drops, putting on the brakes. Then in the catch my hand is rotated maybe 30 degrees, causing me to lose the water on the pull. Still working out the root cause, but probably has to do with breathing technique more than anything. Needless to say, plenty of opportunities for improvement in this pool...
@maikholzhey6167
@maikholzhey6167 5 лет назад
What worked for me is, to take the arm down at an angle 20-30 degrees relative to the water surface while still extending the arm to catch the water. Because if the arm goes down, sth else goes up (Archimedes Principle), and what goes up is your hips and legs, which cause the drag. Also make sure to breath to the side otherwise your head above the water, pushes your legs down
@ludovitrapos1349
@ludovitrapos1349 5 лет назад
Matt Dion While going into glide try to rotate your palm slightly around middle finger axis so that your thumb side of the palm is lower than your pinky side. That will prevent the elbow drop.
@raywn
@raywn Год назад
@@ludovitrapos1349 comment posted 4 years ago, but just made me realise I'm rotating my hand the other way (thumb higher than pinky) during the glide and is so obviously making my high elbow catch a lot harder now I think of it! Thank you!

But isn't it more efficient to stretch your front arm _above_ water, and submerge it only already extended? Air is less dense than water, so you won't be slowing yourself while doing forward motion with your arm.
@ethanyamar1299
@ethanyamar1299 5 лет назад
Dzmitry Lazerka Don’t understand it either but it is better. Try it out in the pool by staying still and laying on ur stomach. Extend one arm out near the surface and see how ur body sinks. Then try extending your arm out around a feet below the surface and see how your body stays afloat.

good video, good presenters, pretty complicated topic … swim technique should always begin with body position … a ‘good catch’ if body position is not hydrodynamic [streamlined in water] simply means pulling a larger surfaced area object [athletes body] through the water ... which will always be more ineficient than pulling a more streamlined athletes body through the water … these ‘drills’ ‘work’ because presenters body position is good.
