Watch part 1 here: • The Celluloid Records ...
Celluloid Records is one of the most revered, open-minded and influential labels of the 1980s, with foundational releases spanning the genres of hip-hop, disco, post-punk, electro, world music and more. Filmed in Paris and New York City, this two part series features key players in the history of the label including producers and musicians Bill Laswell and DXT (formerly Grand Mixer DST) and founder / owner Jean Karakos. A double-disc retrospective of the label, Change The Beat: The Celluloid Records Story, is out now on Strut.

Wow I'm just now finding this. Quick story: Back in the early 80s there used to be the annual New Music Seminar, run by Rockpool's Mark Josephson (who just passed away a few months ago) Tom Silverman, Danny Heaps and a couple other guys. It was for the record industry but it was the 'big ticket' because ALL these new bands from everywhere played all over the city and if you volunteered in some capacity you could get a pass that allowed you access to those shows as well as connections if you had a band. I volunteered a few years, and one of the great perks were all the demo tapes from all the different labels. Alot was crap though, some labels wouldn't let go of the hair bands, but the one that stuck out to me the most, and hands-down the best, most cutting edge and most interesting was the Celluloid sampler. Who knew who Fela Kuti was in '83? Of course the rap stuff too but there was so much great international music that was totally ignored. I played that cassette tape until it was worn out. Doriella DuFontaine with Jimi Hendrix (I never knew it was Hendrix until DECADES later.) B-side. Last Poets. Toure Kunda, Mandingo, and so much more. About 2 hours of musical bliss. There are STILL tracks I'm trying to find out who the artist and song was... a 7 minute Sitar track, (I used to zone out to that at work and my co-workers HATED me for playing it so much,) something that sounded like the Cuban Day Parade, and an old man jazz-scatting a-capella... God if I could only get a copy of that old tape. Keep in mind I was already more than familiar with No Wave, Lydia Lunch, James Chance, Arto Lindsay, and most other stuff that came out of the NYC scene, (I worked at Danceteria with Jody Kurilla who worked her way up in the seminar, and Peppermint Lounge in minor capacities) but the music scene was still limited in it's scope. We were all anglophiles at heart too. New Romanticism was over, and The Smiths were up-and-coming at the time.

Wow, amazing Celluloid had some of the most and BEST early Hip Hop artists and tracks, without "Change The Beat" "Rockit" would NOT have sounded the way it did. "Wild Style" another instant classic, "Smurf" and many others. Bill Laswell and DXT is the man, two legends and great musicians

What's up with Bill Laswell making weird faces and literally rolling his eyes at D.S.T. and saying that going to Nassau to meet Rollings Stones was "just some money shit"? Weird dynamic.
