“A museum is a non-profit, permanent institution in the service of society and its development, open to the public, which acquires, conserves, researches communicates and exhibits the tangible and intangible heritage of humanity and its environment for the purposes of education, study and enjoyment”.
This is the latest version of the ICOM museum definition, dating from 2007. Even if small changes happen every five years or so, it has gone without a deep revision for half a century.
Interview with Jette Sandahl, chair of ICOM's standing committee for the Museum Definition, prospects and potentials.

The reason to not change the definition is because it is NOT APPROPRIATE to randomly change the definition of words. Quite frankly, changing the definition of a word because society has changed is infantile and stupid.

K Locker ideally no. A new word should come up to define the new topic. Gay still means happy but it also means something else. Furthermore, that change happened organically in the language. It was not a concerted effort to change a definition like this is

@@thehater6189 This is the sort of stupidity which comes from organisations like, 'Common Purpose'. Change for the sake of change, I've listened to someone else talking about this, and I didn't understand them either. They waffle on for ages with words which don't go together, and don't actually say anything sensible, just soporific blather. I think that very soon, we will have groups of idiots who decide to be offended at museum exhibitions in order to have them closed.
