Having faced these issues at the Grand Canyon a number of times over the last 40 years, I agree that the major issue is the emotional disconnect between the personal viewing (Wow) and the hard fact that as a photographer, you are shooting a picture of a hole in the ground, and one which makes its own troublesome shadows. My best photo over the years was set up before dawn on the South Rim, about 2 viewpoints to the east of the main village where all the hotels are located. In mid-Fall, at dawn, the sunrise is coming in at a very shallow angle, back lighting a sequence of mini-peaks rising up out of the canyon, but all lower than I was. This gave a layered look of features spaced out down the canyon toward me, backlit with their shadows, further giving a 3-diminsonal effect. Not too contrasty, as I shot on Ektachrome 100 and printed on Cibachrome. Seasons effect the angle of the sun penetrating into the canyon at dawn and sunset. That will give major changes in the available scenes. Winter with snow in the canyon is extra nice, but accommodations can be limited, so plan early.
Hey, love your work. I’m doing a road trip that involves NYC, Vegas, Grand Canyon, Monument, Bryce, Zion, Palm Springs and La. If you could only take 3 lenses what would they be?
Awesome! One for my bucket list. Instagram husband lol. That's one I didn't know about. Enjoy the trip, it must be so nice having company all the time compared to your previous journeys.
That's what I thought about photographing the RMNP. The mountains are so big it's like trying to photograph the ocean. Hopefully I'll get a chance to photograph the Grand Canyon later this year.
Glad to have found your channel. We've got a trip coming up soon. Grateful for your video. I'll be studying and reviewing then over and over. My first full frame 5D classic should arrive soon. Curious to see how pictures look compare to 7D mk1. Thanks for sharing.
Man, you have to share your music with us, damn!! Also, amazing photos. let me know when you'll be in Portugal for the next time I gotta buy you a beer or something
I lived at the Grand Canyon for three months and it IS hard hard place to photograph. I found that my best photos from there were taken when I hiked down into the canyon. It’s not easy but so worth it.
Another great.vlog sir interesting funny and inspiring I thought the last shot had such presents and had its own sense of depth scale excellent shot keep up the good work👍
Hi Brendan, I did comment on another Vlog of yours about the Jeep you were driving through your trip in the States asking you your feedback about this vehicle from the point of view of a photographer to another, since I am looking to buy a new car to be used in my photography travel. Any thoughts, recommendations, critics about that Jeep would be welcome (i.e. comfort, fuel economy, space, drivability, in-out access, photographing from car window, etc.). I would appreciate if this time you could answer. Thank you.
So true about the 10-15 min after sunset : the best light I got from Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, Bryce, Lake Powell or even Capitol Reef was 10 or 20 minutes after the sun had set. GORGEOUS! And most people had already left by that time. ;)
+virginieb20 yup, one lady came up to me as I was shooting my favourite image of the day and said "it's too late to take pictures, isn't it? It's too dark." Naw, lady, this is fire!
Thank you for sharing, Brendan. I'm very short on filters and software...so, I'm challenged in long exposure during intense light situations, not to mention, the enhancement of the dynamic range with the goods like LR... You put out a great deal of useful and enjoyable information!!!!
Incredible shots & video as always, Brendan! I felt the same way when I was there this past July...it's so hard to capture the scale & magnificence of the Grand Canyon. Thrilled to get to experience being there though, & this happily brought me back :)
You need to start bringing models into your shots....or Jodi....next you will have outfits in the car for change overs for her. Reebok running outfits...Patagonia outdoor outfits...
$40 to $60? Really? Can you tell us the motels? Why am I seeing $150+ a night and they're in Tusayan, AZ area (closest to the South Rim entrance?). I plan to go during Christmas 2018.
So Jealous I wanna go back so bad, as that's where my wanna be photographer journey started with kit lenses and a nagging wife come on we gotta go, since then same camera body but quality glass, think I fixed the nagging wife with extra vacation time, wanna pack my bags and hit the road for another adventure
