RootsMagic can not 'sync' with Ancestry and FamilySearch Family Tree but can you make your three trees look the same?
Sync Ancestry & FamilySearch Family Trees with RootsMagic • Sync Your Family Tree ... 👀
Devon Noel Lee asks Bruce Buzbee, President of RootsMagic, how to make a FamilySearch tree with source citations, a RootsMagic tree with hints, sources, and media, and an Ancestry Tree with different hints and media all sync without too much pain and extra work.

I haven't picked a software program yet, but I'm leaning towards Rootsmagic. My question is this; I have one branch of my tree worked out on Ancestry and other branch worked out in FamilySearch. Is there a way to merge them once they're in Rootsmagic? Or should I keep them seperate? One is for my maternal grandmother and the other for my maternal grandfather.

Sorry for the delay. I was hoping I could answer this using RootsMagic 8. But alas, it's not out. I have both of these branches merged for me. I don't have my husband's tree combined in mine. You can merge them into RootsMagic in this way. First, download your Ancestry Tree to RootsMagic. Then, start building your tree from FamilySearch one person at a time. I know it's slow but that's the nature of FamilySearch.

RM7: i click on the FamilySearch icon, calling up the window telling me I have X number of unmatched entries. Click on that textt and I get a blank window. Where are the 13 unmatched entries. I close and open the program. Nothing changes. Can someone please help?

Devon: Okay.....Okay.....*nods head*......*"Hide the pain Harold" smile* lol Yeah I'm starting to see that it's not as simple as just downloading your GEDCOM from Ancestry and just pushing it to FamilyTree. I like Rootsmagic7 and am learning its features, but the thought of diving through 1200 unmatched and 1200 matched people is daunting. FamilyTree is public, which is why I want to push it there, but Ancestry has more record access and I'm still going through hints and merging duplicates on my Ancestry tree. I've got hundreds of hours of work before I will have brick-walled every lead on my tree.

I like to put my interviewees at ease by giving them non-verbal cues. Most of them aren't on camera as much as I am. Is that really so bad? Thanks for watching the video despite my apparently annoying nonverbal cues. And yes, transferring trees isn't easy because of the different approaches to genealogy research across platforms. The question is, how important is it to you? For me, I took one year of my genealogy research time to match up the trees and I haven't had to do it again.

I started with a Family Search tree several years ago, but quickly switched to working my tree from ancestry. I have recently been getting a lot of notifications of new family members on my Family Search Tree. What is the easiest and best way to add these new family members to my ancestry tree? I want to buy Roots Magic or Family Tree Maker program to sync to my ancestry tree. Which program will help me with this? Any suggestions on the best way to accomplish this would be greatly appreciated.

Either RM or FamilySearch will work. However, FTM won't let you write to FamilySearch. You can only download from their website. I use RM to share information between trees.

I tried the upload of my RM tree (30,000 people) to Ancestry, but the results were messy. I keep that one as backup; private but searchable so people can message me for info. I also tried downloading from my Ancestry tree (3000 people) to a new RM file and then merging the old RM file with it. That way is not too bad, but if the files are large, it can be painful to go through merging everything. I now keep my Ancestry tree looking pretty and neat with all the Ancestry linked sources intact. I then back that up via Treeshare to a new RM file occasionally. I am slowly working through my massive old RM file (which was well researched but not well documented) and carefully add them to Ancestry manually, checking sources as I go. I do go off on tangents sometimes with research, so there are definitely people on Ancestry now who are not on the RM tree, but I do make use of tags in both programs to try and keep track of who needs to still be matched. I haven't really wanted to work on my old RM tree too hard either, as the features I crave are coming soon...🤞 in RM8. :) I get bored and frustrated with Familysearch sometimes, spending too long fixing bad merges. My brother wanted to help and learn, so as I am better at the research side, I gave him the job of updating Familysearch by looking at my Ancestry tree and learning that way.

30,000 names is a rather large tree. I can see why you're running into problems. I'm glad you figured out a solution that meets your needs and gave your brother something to do to make him feel part of the process.

After a Rootsmagic tree is uploaded to Ancestry, is there any way to "auto sync" both trees. In my case I work in my computer file which always has more people and information in it than the Ancestry tree does. I can update the Ancestry file one person at a time, but can this be accomplished automatically?

Not in the same way you can with Family Tree Maker.

I have a question about if a wrong person is linked as your ancestor? I have a William Gardner where I have no age information on him. A fourth cousin has some idea of who his parents are but we have no documentation. The William of that family has a cousin ten years younger (or so) that some people seem to get confused with him. I know that the younger cousin cannot be my William as he would have been ten at the birth of my first (4 or 5 greats) aunt. But it looks like researchers have already linked the two together (even though it doesn't make sense). If they are linked how do I unlink them?
@FamilyHistoryFanatics

Unlink them on FamilySearch and then download your tree

Time to look ar microfiche and microfilm from the LDS Church to try to find the real cousin match.

This doesn’t have anything to do with this video, but I have a comment about 8th cousins. I found out that I am 8th cousins, 2x removed with someone. I’m new to all this genealogy stuff, but this persons 7th great grandparents are my 9th great grandparents. Is this too far back to really consider this person my cousin considering we probably have connections to everyone around the world, or would I still refer to this person as a cousin. Also, what are the chances that we may share DNA? Thanks!

How about just moving a large tree from Ancestry to Family Search?
@FamilyHistoryFanatics
@FamilyHistoryFanatics 3 года назад
You can't do that because it's likely already in the FamilySearch Family Tree. Use RootsMagic. Download your tree from Ancestry to RM, and then match up your individuals using RM and compare the data. It is still a one person by one person process because FamilySearch wants everyone to take their time.

Sorry, I have >35T Objects in MyHetitage and like to Sync them all to FamilieSearch. What will be the best way to make that happen automatically? Why? The Frontend at MyHetitage is state of the Art, using AI, multisync able and speed up my Familiehistorie. At my opinion, FamilieSearch takes a lot of Time without Sync automatically big Files wit a lot at objects...

There isn't a way to sync with FamilySearch with MyHeritage unless you pass it through a program like RootsMagic. It's not RootsMagic's fault. FamilySearch wants people to document each change. This slows things down.

I'm confused? I have Roots Magic 7 and it allows you to see any changes made between the two and update them, so why in the video does it say you can't? Also, I'm a bit stuck. How do you assign sources to multiple facts in roots magic, like you can on ancestry? Additionally, I'm a bit stuck when it comes to citing birth certificates, on the tight way to do it? Let's say I have a person's birth certificate and the source is "Birth Certificates' and the citation details include the name of the person. Assuming that's the correct way of doing it, the certificate will include the fathers occupation, would I need to copy the sons birth certificate source and paste it on the fathers fact or is their an easier way of doing it? Any help would be much appreciated

This video focuses on the challenge of initially syncing a tree when your RootsMagic Tree different from your Family Search and Ancestry accounts and the FS and AN trees differ as well.

With RootsMagic 7, you can 'copy' a source to multiple facts and different people and their facts. Meaning, you can copy a marriage certificate source to the marriage event for a couple, then the birth event (if it mentions a birth date and and place), and finally the person citation for the parents. To do this, you would enter the citation in one place for any of those three components (or others as necessary). Then, press the memorize button in the source form for that event. Close the source window and open another event source window. There is a paste button and your will add the source from the previous event there. Repeat for each fact you wish to cite with that one record. (Fingers crossed this improves in RootsMagic 8 when it's released). As for how to properly cite your source, you can use a citation template preloaded in Roots Magic to guide you through extracting the important information for your citation. For the extra information (father's occupation), I typically put that in the notes field for the event. Hope that helps. Sorry for the delay. I had wanted to put thought into the response.

Your comment is what I was wishing to see. So, if I have Roots Magic and someone adds a source or a new family member, or even some documents, am I going to be notified ? Only bought it today, so any info will be helpful.

I appreciate the constructive criticism. I believe I've improved on this since that time. However, nearly every person I've interviewed struggles to be comfortable on camera. Giving verbal and non-verbal cues that they are explaining themselves has put them at ease. It's a difficult balance to achieve.
