The Changing Sets of Coronation Street

From its humble beginnings as a row of flimsy wooden house fronts crammed into a tiny Granada studio to the vast expanse used today at MediaCity, Coronation Street has changed an awful lot in the past sixty years. The row of terraced houses with a shop at one end and the Rovers Return at the other is just as recognisable as ever, but beyond that, the street is worlds away from what the show runners could have ever conceived of back in 1960. In this discussion, we chat about the evolution of the external sets over the years, tracking the buildings that came and went, roads that were lengthened and (in the case of Rosamund Street) massively shortened, and other changes that viewers have seen come and go.
This video contains numerous pictures of the street over the years, so keep watching!

Amazingly well researched and as someone who was weaned on Corrie having been born 50 years ago and remembering the likes of Annie, Ena and Albert and my mum telling me all about how Valerie died in the Barlow’s maisonette I remained a massive Corrie fan until they sadly killed off Derek Wilton and Bet left after Rita pulled out of helping her buy the Rovers. You have put together such a wonderfully nostalgic podcast / vlog 👏

I loved the storylines about the builders when the new side of the street was going up in 1989, including Kimberly Taylor's priceless line in the Rovers after a brawl: 'Excuse me, you're stepping on Mr Watts!'

Loved watching this. The original outdoor set was the back of the large warehouse which was behind the medical centre. The land was used for the tour which started in late 80s.

19:47, number 7 collapsed so that they could halve the set equally and fit them into the studio and just film the shop end or pub end. which is why you never saw the actual gap until 1968 when they moved outside

At 43:00 there’s a pic on Pinterest which shows the 1982 Coronation Street set. If you pinpoint the building in the middle the Grape Street set is on the other side of that where the carpark now is on that pic 😊

You mention a documentary about where everything was.....maybe you could find out what happened to the Select...the little room that they had wedding receptions in. It seems to have disappeared!! Really enjoying going through these podcasts (I'm doing some Christmas baking)..Cheers!

2:06, on the pic of archie street it's a funny irony that the 3rd house down from the shop is cladded given that number nine ended up being cladded, als the 3rd house from the shop

Maybe Tony Warren always had it in the back of his mind and was waiting for the perfect time to incorporate it and then along came Vera Duckworth lol.

my idea for set expansion is to build a multi storey car park, hide behind a facade, then use the old car park space to expand the set further

On the tour I was surprised to find that the postbox putside the corner shop was pink, not red! And you got to Coronation St via tram along 'Baker St'. I went just before the houses were built on the old factory site.

found it odd on the grape street set that they didn't rebuild number 7

One mystery to me - when I used to watch the show growing up in the 70s and 80s - was the layout of those terraces inside. I do wish you'd do a video about this. I always assumed they were two up two down but I read somewhere that they were three-bedroomed terraces? Also what was going on with those half bay windows? It seemed like you entered through the front door with stairs in front of you and a passageway to a back room. But what about the front? Please help!

The 5th instalment of the set should be set around glass boxes and the smart lockdown city concept.

there's a weird error on the 1990s building of the new houses as the gap between the platts, underworld and the kabin wouldn't be cobbles as that area was under the factory / community centre. and the rails were a throwback to the real world history of the site which was a rail goods yard. The rosamond street buildings which because the medical centre is called the stables and was where the good were, stabled, hence the raised area. the rails would never have existed in the corrie verse as there was never any railway activity on that site. So it's a bit funny that they have copied that error into the current media city set

Am currently enjoying this - wish you would do one on the end of the ''select'' in the Rovers and how and why? Was this ever explained?

I think it might have been quietly retired when the Rovers was renovated after the fire in the 80s. It never really made any sense that it was in there, so I think they just kind of hoped people would eventually forget! 😂

I always found the story of them trying to find a viaduct a bit far fetched given the whole area either side of the bonded warehouse was rain goods yard with a bloody great viaduct going into the actual warehouse. quite visible from the Granada offices. In one book i read that grape street was real houses which just happened to be the right number between a pub and shop. hate it when they make stuff up rather than just say, we needed a space beside a viaduct, there was some opposite so we just hired it for 14 years

Where does the tram/railway go which you see at the side of the Rovers/medical centre/chip shop actually go? as when you see high level shots of the street there are just rows of houses and a ginnel between the rear yards of the street and the adjacent street
